During my last car photoshoot, I've noticed some issues with my small flashes, that kept me distracted from shooting. Lack of power (sometimes, I need to shoot details at a very small aperture), and most of all: It's a lot work to set them up. Two strobes on one stand, one strobe on another stand, all with hot-shoe adapters, external batteries, wireless trigger, etc. So the idea of buying a studio strobe grew. Tomorrow, I have another car shoot, so I decided to upgrade. Today, I bought a pair of Elinchrom D-Lite 4's, with two softboxes, Lightstands, wide angle reflectors and two beauty dishes. I know, that they're plastic and the locking screw is too weak, but besides that, I already love them (especially the modeling lights). The biggest downside with Elinchrom is their 7mm hole for umbrellas. Now I need to modify some of my equipment. Boo!

To stay independent from power plugs, I've ordered an Innovatronix Explorer GT. Can't wait to try it out!

For most of my inside shot, I will stay with the "strobist way to go". The D-Lites are just too powerful for my appartment :-)

I built some adapters for the battery compartment of my strobes to power them with 6v lead gel batteries. This modification is well documented on the internet. Thanks to Deanphoto for pointing me in the right direction.

I used wooden dowels and screws. I have two 6v 4.5Ah batteries. I was shooting tonight some things, just to test them and I had two flashes on full power working for 1.5 hours with a lot of shots. The batteries are still very fresh and the recycle times on full power were never below 4 seconds on my sb-25 and my Vivitar 285.

I also have two bigger and heavier 6v 12Ah batteries that I will use for shooting cars. The 12 Ah should be really enough to get me through a 4 hour car shoot. The other advantage is, that I put the batteries in a bag and hang them to the lightstand as a "sandbag". This should make them more stable in windy conditions.

I made two dummy batteries for the Vivitar 285 to fill up the two empty battery places when using the adapters. That way, I dont have to modify the Vivitar battery holder and can put the adapters right into the battery compartment.

Unfortunately, my sb-26 died. Maybe I was just shooting to fast, so it overheated. The fast recycle times are tricky... it's completely dead now :-( I will replace it with another Vivitar 285, although I liked the built in optical slave and the possibility to power it down to 1/64.

Further improvements will be a fuse (!), spiral cables and some used camera bags for the batteries.

I've always wanted a Vivitar 285. When I returned home from Mallorca, I noticed that my SB-25 was damaged. The zoom does not work anymore and there is a delay in recycling. I think it was damaged while being loaded to the plane. I looked on ebay for a 285 and was lucky to find a used one and got it for just over 50 Euros. They are pretty hard to find here and I am happy, that it still has it's manual and the wide angle adapter. It works great, handling is so easy. No tiny buttons, just turn the big power button and pull the zoom head. Really nice. I just wish, it could go lower than 1/16 power. It also works fine with my Skyports (with the Kaiser hot shoe adapter)

Ok, that strobist stuff with the small flashes is nice, but I wanted to have more power, so... This is real off-camera flash :-)

It seems, that we can not have a hot and sunny day here, without lightning and thunder in the evenings. This was different a few years ago...

Stacked three different exposures to get more flashes in one shot :-)

For two years, the cheap Cactus triggers worked for me. First the V1, and in the last year the V2. A few weeks ago, I was shooting two cars for a magazine and I ran into trouble with the cactus triggers. Sometimes, they did not fire the flash, or the maximum sync speed went down to 1/20. I've tried everything to fix this, including new batteries, a different hot shoe, cable, etc... nothing worked. This really made me think about those small things. As this was a paid job, I don't have the time and patience to fix this issues again on a location shoot, so I decided to buy some more reliable (and expensive) triggers.

I've looked at the pocket wizards, but they are just ridiculously expensive. I've also looked at the radio poppers, but I never need E-TTL and they look somehow... "DIY" to me.

I've heard only the best about the elinchrom skyports, so I bought a set, including a transmitter and two receivers. Finally, I can sync my flashes to my maximum camera sync speed (1/250), the cactus triggers did only 1/160 (with new batteries). Now I want a Nikon with an electronic shutter, because the skyports sync up to 1/1000 :-)

I can't wait to test them out in the field under "real life" conditions.
