I am trying out my new FujiX100 on teh streets, this is a quick capture of a couple crossing the street just around from the traffic lights but I loved how the man was clutching her hand safely and looking out for his love!

Technically not one of my better shots but I really need to get some time to get out with this camera (when I am not laden with shopping bags and a child or two)!
Stranger Portrait #216

I was out with a group on friends one night in Nottingham working with 3 models. We were working on some fashion shots in the city when I spotted this guy sitting in the Market Square chatting to a friend.

Despite having 3 gorgeous models to work my urban 'street' instincts kicked in and I ran off leaving the models behind to meet and take this guys photo.

He was mid conversation when I got there but happy enough to be photographed. It was one of those occasions where you ask someone and they kind think your a bit mad but go along with you anyway!

After the shoot and a quick chat I handed over a card with where he could see the shot and I headed back to see if I could locate the models who had by this time drifted off up the road...oops!

I spotted this chap sitting outside a cafe relaxing.

He as simply observing those around him in a soulful way and I liked what I saw.

I had a brief chat about my stranger portraits and took a shot of him sitting where he was. I aced his name and he said Byron, Byron Mae - he then explained he does a similar thing to me by meeting strangers who are artists and has a website www.byronmae.com
I'e had a look and he is a real interesting guy - pleasure to meet you Byron!
Luke 'High Tops', Nottingham 92/100

pmcconnochie / Urban Scot Photography posted a photo:

I was walking through Nottingham with my with, 4 children and my wife's parents when I spotted an amazing pair of bright yellow High Tops being worn by a guy sitting on a bench chatting to someone. It was enough to stop me in my tracks, as always...then my mother in law came over and pointed him out as well!

My wife was keen to head into a shop (on the hunt for a dress needed this summer for an Opera) so I seized the opportunity to run over and say hello armed with my less intimidating camera (the Sony Nex & Yashica 50mm).

I explained that I run a blog called Urban Scot or Facebook www.facebook.com/UrbanScot and wanted to take a shot of his trainers for my blog. He introduced himself as Luke, he also runs a fashion blog (I'm hoping he will check this out online and let me know the name/link for his blog) and he was more than happy to let me shoot his shoes!

Apparently the two of them were just talking about high tops so my timing was spot on!

After taking a picture of his shoes I asked for a portrait and then I headed back off to my wife leaving Luke with a link to my flickr account where he can find the blog link.

Thanks Luke - hope you enjoyed your day!

This is my last post before the 100 Strangers meet tomorrow in London, hopefully the weather will be okay and I can finish round 2...and maybe even start some new concepts for Round 3!
Luke 'High Tops', Nottingham 92/100

On my walk around town this week I bumped into a group of skateboarders. I've often wanted to shoot some skaters but haven't had the opportunity till now!

Cheers guys!

I rarely take group shots, in fact I believe I had one in my first 100 strangers set (a stag night) so I decided it was time to try something new!

I was walking up Peham Street, Nottingham and my attention was grabbed by the colours of the decks these lads were carrying so I decided to throw them my pitch and explain that I was looking to shoot a group shot! They were pretty amused by my constant use of the word Awesome (a sad throwback to being a skater in the 80's...I could have been using the word RAD and they would still have thought of me as an oldie)!

The lads were cool with the concept and we took a few with the dude on the left kneeling but in the end I got them to stand shoulder to shoulder as I wanted a shot of just the decks - see comments for a proper mint shot!

I liked interacting with them and it felt much more Humans of New York than my usual Sartorial thing!

I didn't really catch their names, one was called Saul but in the end having given them all a moo card I told them I'd just title them Nottingham Skate Crew! I put a picture of the decks on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/UrbanScot and I have already had one lad thinking he knows them!!!
Hope you like the shot lads - seriously it's awesome!

I didn't catch this guys name - he was part of a couple walking through the Market Square in Nottingham and I approached and asked for a portrait.

They were mega excited to be photographed, the girl remarked that it was just like The Sartorialist which made me smile! I told her he was a big influence on what I did!
I shot this with the 85mm and again the flash held off camera left with a pocket wizard - fun to play with equipment I can't afford!

pmcconnochie / Urban Scot Photography posted a photo:

It has been one heck of a week at work and I was desperate to get out with the camera! Fortunately I had arranged a few weeks ago to meet a friend who is a wedding photographer who was keen to check out my street technique.

On the way to meet my mate in town I spotted this guy standing in the middle of the Old Market Square, he seemed to be with a few others and one person stopped to take his photo. I called him over and asked if he spoke English, "no" he replied and began to walk passed me.

I took this as an opportunity to try to explain my intentions rather the a rejection and with the help of my iPhone portrait album and my moo card managed to explain that I was a photographer and wanted to capture his face for my project.

Once he agreed he happily moved into the centre of the square for me to take a few shots and as he left I asked him his name, "Janus" he replied in an accent I assume is from somewhere in Eastern Europe but I couldn't place it.

I was excited to take this shot as it was my first real 100 Stranger portrait with my new Canon 5DMkII, it was also my first time shooting out the studio with the new 70-200 2.8 mkII lens - a heavy but enjoyable combo!
It is also my first stranger in a month and a half - my longest break in the 13 months I've been making street portraits!

This is the 78th portrait in my 100 Strangers Project round 2.

Colin and I were padding through the back streets of Soho and Picadilly when I spotted Hannah hanging around a store doorway - the place she was waiting to get into was all locked up. She had her earphones in and initially I walked by thinking she would just say no but then I glanced at Colin and said "You never know till you ask" and headed back to say hello!

Hannah was happy to pose and was the exact opposite of what I expected, she was lovely, had a real high pitched sweet voice and was very excited to see the results on the back of the camera.
She asked if I was a photographer and suddenly I felt a bit sheepish as I was pony out with my Sony NEX5 which is fun on the street but miles away from my usual dslr setup!

Moo card handed over I (hope Hannah checks out her shots) I headed back over to Colin to discuss how amazing it is that people are rarely as you expect them to be!

I spotted the camera that this guy was holding as I walked through Leicester on Sunday and had to approach him to say hello.

I immediately asked him to be part of my 100 strangers project and explained I really wanted to shoot his camera and create a diptych - I could visualise this shot in my eye at the time.

Richie was real happy to allow me to take the shots, he was pleased that I had spotted the camera - he referred to it as his 'favourite camera in the world' and it is beauty!

It turns out Richie was also a photographer and a real pleasure to meet. I passed on my card so hopefully he will see this dip.

I have been reading a lot of the 52 Suburbs blog at the moment and I love Louise Lawson's use of diptych so am forming them often in my mind as I walk around - this image is in homage to her!
James the Sleepy Chef, Soho, London 74/100

pmcconnochie / Urban Scot Photography posted a photo:

Colin and I met up for a Saturday morning round London and as we walked though Soho I spotted a guy sitting on the street halfway down a quiet road. At first I thought he was maybe begging or something so decided to take a wander does to check it out. It was only when I got close I realised the guy was wells dressed, sitting with a pen and writing on a piece of yellow paper on top os a colourful flower suitcase type box.

I said help and went in with my usual introduction when shooting street. The guy I met was James, he was sitting outside his restaurant, Copita and he described himself as sleepy as he had been out most/all of the night and had lost his keys so he was waiting for someone to let him in to the restaurant.

We had a brief chat and he was telling me the restaurant serves Tapas - having had a quick google in looks like an ace restaurant and I will definitely go back next time I'm in London.

I decided to work up a diptych showing James the Tapas Chef alongside his case/menu that he was working on as he waited for his keys - I hope things worked out and you got back in in time to prep for the day - it was a pleasure to meet you.

James the Sleepy Chef, Soho, London 74/100

Mou Mou originates in France and has been in Castle Donington for 4 years. He works tirelessly and cheerfully in Egos Barber Shop along with Karl and is a huge hit with all his regular customers, families and the kids who love to wait for Mou Mou to cut their hair.

I managed to head out today for a walk with my brother in Leicester having had ashore break from street portraits.

To be honest it was a lovely day, very quiet and I did not really find many people to photograph (perhaps as it was so hot people went to the park instead of town or perhaps I'm becoming too fussy - unsure)!

I did however see this guy whose hat, glasses and well trimmed beard spoke ti me of style. He was walking down the road with two girls and happily got involved in the project. Chris seemed quite amused by the request for a portrait, his lives in London but was up in Leicester visiting one of the girls he was out with that day - I didn't pry beyond that.

It was good to be out with the 50mm lens again and I will certainly make a real effort to get out more now the lights are brighter!
Helena, Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham 68/100

pmcconnochie / Urban Scot Photography posted a photo:

I have previously wanted to use this walkthrough in Bridlesmith Gate for a portrait as it has some stage lights and is often really well lit along with large glass panels in the rook allowing lots of natural light in but have never managed to take a shot inside. I have taken a portrait of someone outside fit in my first 100 strangers series.

This particular day I decided to stay until I found someone worth photographing, I had spotted a guy on his mobile phone and I waited and waited but he didn't seem to finish his call so eventually I gave up, despite lots of eye contact and me gesturing towards my camera!

It was about then that I saw this lady walk towards me - she had a great hat and coat and the colours just worked. At first I didn't approach her and she walked past me and into the walkway so I quickly acted before it was to late.

Helena was quite happy to pose and it was only after a few shots that she was asking me about the project and the purpose of the shots and if I ever exhibited that we really got talking. Helena is a lawyer so I'm glad I got permission to use this shot!!!

This is the 68th portrait in my 100 Strangers Project round 2.

Alex, Castle Gate, Nottingham 62/100

pmcconnochie / Urban Scot Photography posted a photo:

I spotted Alex and his lady friend walking up towards Nottingham Castle and I was taken by his cool and quirky image so ran over to ask him to participate in the project.

He was happy to get involved but I got the feeling his partner was less so, I wondered if this was because he was being asked for a photo as opposed to her or because he had been singled out on account of his style (she kinda rolled her eyes a little).

Alex is a quantative surveyor and was very cool about being photographed. Despite trying out a new idea with the card I managed to ask him to stand in the right place in the centre of a nice cobbled road, however this time I struggled with the placement of the board (I was trying to direct the guy holding it to move around instead of realising I could move around to centre it- learning experience) and the light was much brighter so I had a lot of direct sun to contend with - not a problem I've faced lately. Another good learning experience as I try out this idea.
