Marcus Aurelius (Emperor, 161-180 AD)

The last of the five good ones. I have met two Presidents of the USA in a campaign [Kennedy] at Detroit and at his Inauguration [Carter]. It was exciting but I wonder what it was like to meet Marcus A. an exciting Roman Emperor.

Holy Week represented by this painting of the Crucifixion of Jesus and the Two Thieves.

Mantegna, like most Italian painters at this time, was interested in perspective and vanishing points. The vanishing point here is some where behind the central cross, with even the horse on the right lining up properly.

He was unusual, painting Roman soldiers like an archeologist, having studied ancient sculptures.

Except for Mary (mother of Jesus) all are holding something symbolic in their hands. What is Mary Magdalene holding in her hand?

Netherlandish artists love to use symbols in their art, so what is Jesus holding in his hand? And why does John the Baptist hold a chalice? The artist has "floating words" coming out of the mouths of Mary and the Baptist.

Probably painted by Memling at the end of his career, around 1490, given the use of a pattern of the Italian Renaissance. the garland held by putti, forms above the resurrected Christ a canopy natural and solemn.

St. Sebastian is on the left panel, a common subject for artist's and the Ascension of Jesus is on the right panel, with only his lower legs showing as he passes into the heavenly clouds.

Henry, the King of France receives a portrait of Maria de Medici gazes at it and instantly falls in love with her, helpless.

This work is part of huge cycle of paintings in one room, devoted to the life of Maria, all painted by Rubens.

They are all in one large room, and when I visit the Louvre, I never forget to visit it.
