a nest of air

Photomaginarium posted a photo:

Our Daily Challenge: so nice to come home to ...

banking off the cliche idea that "birds are as at home in the air as fish are at home in the water, as mammals are at home on land ...", etc.

the idea also feels like it has a connection to Peter Gabriel's OVO album, where ecology and nature are striving for balance on a mythological scale ...

-=-

the geek behind the curtain: one shot, taken yesterday at the local lake. one texture layer, made "by hand."

one thing i've envied about other people's textures are the scratchy surfaces they manage to "find" and incorporate into the texture layer. this texture layer is made from a layer where i had used a color-drop-select-tool to get a dark blue from the existing lake photo. then i poured the color onto a new empty layer with the paint-bucket-tool. i blended the 2 layers using a radial-gradient technique on a layer mask. if you google "blend layers" and "layer mask" you should find instructions for that procedure. then to get the scratchy effect, i used a very small dry brush on the "clear" setting -- which erased the top layer in thin strips and showed the blue of the lake beneath.

the geek behind the curtain: no serious processing here, just a square crop and a tiny touch to the contrast to try and not loose the treeline entirely. got about 80 shots of this little dude this morning. took a detour on the way to work to the little lake on the border of campus to catch some fog but got luckily distracted by this poser.
