Sunset at Talacre Lighthouse

Anthony Owen-Jones posted a photo:

A second photograph from my trip to Talacre a couple of weeks ago (+1 in comments). I went with a friend and we'd both been shooting some long exposures. We'd actually packed up for the night and were chatting when the light decided to give us one last hurrah. I managed to get the camera out and a grad filter on to capture this, just before the light closed shop for the evening.

Maybe this colour thing will catch on.

By the way, this is another photograph taken with my Canon 6D which I recently upgraded to. I get asked questions from time to time by people who are thinking of buying a 600D or another model in the Rebel/Kiss range. So I thought I'd share some thoughts on my experience of upgrading from the cropped sensor 600D to the full frame 6D and hope it might help if you find yourself debating a similar decision - you can read it here
If I could see the things you've seen (Talacre Lighthouse, North Wales)

We're quite lucky in North Wales to have a number of interesting lighthouses to photograph. This is Talacre lighthouse which I've photographed a number of times before. Every one of those photographs to date has a completely different set of weather and tidal conditions and a different mood. It makes me wonder about all the things these structures have seen.

As per my previous upload (+1 in comments), that's me in the frame. I'm actually thinking of making this a series - of me sitting in places I love to visit and where I feel a sense of peace. I've actually been shooting 'self portrait' long exposures ever since I bought an ND filter but until my recent shots I've never been happy with the result. I think I've settled on a style now which I hope to continue and that plays a part but the other part to this is my new 6D. Some people think the wifi feature is a gimmick and for them it probably would be. However for me it has real creative possibilities both with these (which I need to come up with a catchy title for), and hopefully the 'Stranger and the stars' series that I also hope to work on.
I just want to say a big thank you to any and everyone who has stopped by to +1, like, favourite my photos. Or who've offered kind words, encouragement or advice and especially those who've offered friendship.

Anyway this photo is in memory of my dad. Today would have been his birthday. He used to like sitting on benches watching the world go by.
There's more info about this photograph on my blog here:
I just want to say a big thank you to any and everyone who has stopped by to +1, like, favourite my photos. Or who've offered kind words, encouragement or advice and especially those who've offered friendship.

Anyway this photo is in memory of my dad. Today would have been his birthday. He used to like sitting on benches watching the world go by.

There's more info about this photograph on my blog here:
Pink Moon (Pwllheli, Gwynedd)
I've hit a bit of a wall with my black and white photography, so whilst I work out how to navigate my way around or over it, I thought I'd share a couple of colour photos starting with this one. This is the first of hopefully many photos taken with my new Canon 6D. :)

You can easily tell when I've spent time in Pwllheli (in North Wales) as I always end up with photos of these walkways down to the beach. Whether it's walking my dog early in the morning or during the twilight, I'm always drawn to their photographic potential. The Snowdonia mountain range can be seen on the horizon with snow on the tops.

BTW I know the moon isn't actually pink but I liked the title and the reference to Nick Drake's song which is as soothing as my frequent walks on this beach.
Before the crowds (Llandudno Pier)
I made the trip the weekend before last to catch the early morning light at Llandudno Pier. The shot I had in mind wasn't possible as the tide was further in that I expected. After taking a few side shots (which I might post up) I noticed that the caretaker was opening the pier, so I decided to take a stroll along. There's something about being in popular places before the crowds arrive - with spring approaching, I guess I'll have to make the most of them before the tourists arrive (note, I'm not against tourists, North Wales needs the tourism industry!).

Now for those of you who read what I write about these photos I have a question for you but if you've not had a proper look at the image please do so in case I bias you.

So whilst on the pier I was trying to find a stretch that had symmetry when it came to the benches but there just isn't any on the pier - whilst the lamp stands are all a bit crooked. Out of interest I wonder who looked at the images and noticed the benches weren't all perfectly aligned and if you did whether it bothers you or not - I'm just curious to see how symmetry impacts people. I was tempted to do an alternate version of this by flipping one half over - maybe I will at some stage.

I'd had a couple of weekends without getting out with the camera prior to the one just past so decided to give this image another go. I've had about five or six goes on it so far and for the first time I felt I was getting somewhere this time around. Clearly I just needed to go dark!

I think this was a slipway someone put in but it's pretty broken up now. I took this just around the corner from the point where I took my photo "The Bowl" for those who recall that one. I'm back down that way later next month and I reckon I'll try and get a few more shots of this area - despite it being a small beach, there's a lot of interesting rock formations.
The Menai Bridge

So yesterday I went out looking for snow, jealous of some of the great photos that I've seen taken across the UK. Sadly living so close to the North Wales coast, we didn't really get any so we (my wife and I) went inland. After driving around for a bit, we took a wrong turn and ended up going up a steep country lane with nowhere to turn around. Had it not been for the expert driving of my wife not only would we have returned without any photos but we probably wouldn't have a car either as we started sliding back down.

Anyway after all the fun and games we did find some great snow but unfortunately not any interesting locations so you'll just have to make do with looking elsewhere for your snow images and knowing that my wife and I had a great time walking our dog.

Instead this is an image from last year. I've got a whole host of images that are sitting waiting for me to make a decision on or that I've started and not finished from late last year when I couldn't get into editing. This is one of those, taken on a trip to Anglesey with a good friend of mine as we went to photograph the lighthouse. On the way back the light was great so we stopped by this popular view point and took a few images of the Menai Bridge.

Memories of Mann (Mann Island, Liverpool)

Better viewed on black

So I'm not quite sure where November went but it certainly wasn't spent online by me. Boy that 'real world' can be a pain in the neck sometimes!

Anyway I'm glad to be able to share some new work with you all (and I hope to be able to catch up a little with that of others in the coming days).

This photograph is one I made on a trip into Liverpool last week - though it's actually been a year in the making. It's of one of the Mann Island buildings in Liverpool, a set of buildings that divide opinions as they are set amongst the historic architecture of the Liverpool dockland area. However this one, a black, monolithic structure and specifically this angle, I love. It does what, I think, a good building should do, it makes people want to look up - everyone who walked past whilst I was setup found their eye drawn up along this edge of the building.

I actually saw this on a trip into Liverpool for my mum's birthday last December where we visited the Museum of Liverpool (another building that divides opinion but one I also photographed) to take in the exhibition on Liverpool's Chinese links. It was of significance as my Grandad who sadly departed a few years back was part of that past, having left Shanghai in his twenties and finding himself in Liverpool. The stories and pictures were incredible to take knowing that in many respects it could easily have been about my Grandad. Though tragic to read of those who would one day disappear, presumed deported back to China, with their families left without knowledge of their whereabouts. I'm glad my Grandad wasn't one of those.

Anyway, it's only taken me a year to get back to Liverpool, with camera gear and weather in my favour. My wife was kind enough to let me wonder off taking photos whilst she chilled out before the concert (Elbow, who were excellent btw) that we were going to for her birthday. The dockland area is really interesting in Liverpool, I found it inspired me for photography more than my recent trips into Manchester (no offence to any Mancunians I know - I plan to explore both more!) and I'm already trying to organise another trip there - hopefully it won't take me another year.
A bit of minimalism for a Monday. This was a fall back location after the image I originally went out to get on Saturday failed to materialise as I misjudged the conditions completely.

This proved to be harder to grab than I expected. The 'pond' this is situated in has a lot of ducks and swans who call it home and they're quick to discover anyone near one of the banks and gather in the hope of receiving bread. So, even with the long exposure, I had to time my shots inbetween visitors moving to other parts of the bank and distracting the wildlife for long enough.

Just a quick thanks to everyone who continues to offer support and comments on my photography. It's really appreciated and I'm trying to keep up as best I can when the 'real world' allows me to spend time on here.

This photo is a little bit of a hark back to why I actually took up photography as a hobby last year. I suspect it's a story shared with many of you. Right at the start of my stream there's a photo I took with my camera phone the winter before last of the lovely park I walk my dog in daily covered in snow. The joy at capturing it was tempered by the disappointment that the photo didn't quite do it justice. A seed was sown and a DSLR bought. Since then though I've largely tried to take photographs that don't just display the landscape as I see it, so I think this is nice as it really was just about capturing a beautiful natural moment.

This is another shot from my holiday in Pwllheli. I was up on the first day to walk the dog and noticed some sailing boats out on the water (I'm still to get a shot of the sailing boats I like!) and the light looked like it might get interesting. So I grabbed the camera, ushered Zack out of the door and crossed the road to the beach. By the time I'd done that, the sailing boats had moved on but the fishing boat in the distance was working it's way towards where the sun was breaking through the cloud. All I had to do was wait and nature did the rest.

Taken yesterday at the WelshFlickrCymru group Northern meet. Arrived late and so didn't get to chat to as much as I'd have liked but it was good to catch up all the same.

I've a few photos of Talacre lighthouse in my stream now. It's interesting how the same subject can look so different given the changing tides and weather conditions. The clouds were already quite streaky without the long exposure but it was needed as much in this one to give the 'isolated' feel here. I won't name names but one of the members had to be edited out of this one! :)
So something very experimental from me. I've wanted to photograph cooling towers for as long as I can remember. Since taking up photography as a proper hobby I've just not managed to get around to it - whilst becoming increasingly aware that they're a very popular thing to photograph. There's a stunning collection of work based on cooling towers all over and I was aware of this whilst out photographing and during the editing for this.

Normally I try, as best I can, to give my images something of a clean look. I've gone the other way with this and gone with something quite dark and grainy. Hopefully it's worked.

A big thanks to my friend Charlie Pragnell for the trip out - he's got some great images from this journey on his stream too.
So as mentioned on my last upload of the photo taken on the pier (see comments), I took a trip down to Llandudno (North Wales, UK) to photograph the pier a couple of weekends ago, wanting to take a specific shot. Conditions didn't work out in my favour but I had a fun time getting a few different angles of the pier.
Apocalyptic Holiday (Colwyn Bay Pier)

Anthony Owen-Jones posted a photo:

View on black

I get a lot of comment from friends about how bleak and apocalyptic my photography view of the world can be. It's not really intended in the main (or maybe it is?), I just like the attraction of isolating man made objects in wide open spaces. However there was little choice but to embrace it with this subject.

This is the sad, sorry remains of what once was a beautiful Victorian pier in Colwyn Bay, North Wales. It's fought the tide and elements for over 100 years but sadly it's biggest foe is neglect and human disagreement as a row over it's ownership and future has rumbled on, unsettled, for a number of years now. During that time the once beautiful iron work has started to show obvious signs of it's lack of care. It's tragic how many beautiful tourist attractions from the Victorian age in the UK have faced (and lost) this same battle.

Anthony Owen-Jones posted a photo:

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope you have a great 2013.

I really appreciate all the support I've received and comments on my photography over the past year. I still feel that I'm new to this and have so much to learn so the help, guidance and occasional bit of counselling is welcome!

My ambitions for 2013 are:
To get out with the camera more
To improve the quality of my final work
To start getting some of my images hung on walls, with a push to get some of them exhibited locally
To do a better job than I've done in recent months of staying in touch with the many friends I've made through photography

This is an image of a little harbour in North Wales. It was taken during the wet summer and I was up against it here as the darker clouds you can just see edging into shot on the right were carrying a lot of rain.
All that remains (Lleyn Peninsula)

Amidst the fuss about communities earlier in the week on G+ I missed the fact that Snapseed finally came to Android. I'm really pleased about this as having trashed my laptop screen earlier in the year I decided not to get it fixed but instead bought a Nexus 7. I took the Nexus on my last holiday to the Lleyn Peninsula and did some quick edits using a different app to get an idea of which photos I might work on when I got home but it wasn't great. Snapseed is so much better for that purpose and it's inspired this edit.

The photo itself is taken in a location that's slightly tricky to shoot as there's only a short period when it's accessible up close and before the tide recedes beyond the posts. The posts are all that remain of a jetty that apparently used to serve the quarry that once operated here. This isn't actually the photo I have in mind and I'll have to go back for that one as conditions changed too quickly but I like this and it adds a splash of colour to my stream. It's also for my wife who helps me get to all there places and who's preference is for colour images.

Anthony Owen-Jones posted a photo:

I hope everyone is well. I've been keeping an eye on friends' postings but haven't had much time to comment. That and I'm in one of those photography lulls, partly caused by a cold/cough that refuses to go away and is impacting my sleep. That said I am excited to be trying out some architecture photography. I took my first tenative steps last week - though plans didn't quite go as hoped (missing the lovely evening light and there being virtually an empty sky the following morning). Was fun trying to composition though - I have a lot to learn (I also found the whole idea of setting up outside a tall building with a tripod really odd - a completely different experience to being on the quiet beaches of North Wales)! I have one image which I'm playing with - I'm trying to convince myself whether I like it and/or whether it's worth sharing to show my starting point.

In the meantime I thought I'd share this which I've been toying with on and off since my holiday a few months back. It's actually a 'similar' to one I've posted previously but the thing that caught my eye on this is the really unusual impact the long exposure has had on the cloud. This is one of the things I like about long exposure photography - the fact that whilst you can have an idea how an image will come out, you don't really know until that count of seconds ends. Whilst I'm very much a digital photographer, I wonder if this is a little bit how film photography feels - with the wait to see the exposure (though obviously with film it's longer than 30-400 seconds before you see the result).
