Update January 2013: Made a few more tweaks. This is the latest version

Flickr's photo page redesign in June 2010 was generally excellent, except for a few things which bothered me:

It looks like those changes are here to stay, unless, that is, you install this user stylesheet:
userstyles.org/styles/37228 (announced in the Flickr hacks group.)

It applies the following fixes:
(1) Reinstate title above photo
(2) Keep the 'photostream' film strip permanently open. (It's currently collapsed when you come from a different context, such as Contacts, Favorites, a set, or a group.)
(3) Jan 2013 version: move the action buttons to the right to use less space above photo
(4) Jan 2013 version: unfix the top navigation bar

Notes:
- You sometimes need to mouse over the film strip for all the photos to appear.
- Titles long enough to wrap will crop off the top of the photo. You can view the missing portion by mousing over the title.

Installation:
The easiest way to install this is by using Stylish for Firefox or Stylish for Chrome. (I've only tested it in Firefox 3.6.) It won't work in Internet Explorer.

Revision history:
23 Sep 2010: First version
25 Sep 2010: Removed style to "Remove map for non-geotagged photos". (I didn't realise the map can be permanently removed with the 'X' button.) Created new user style to reinstate the button bar above the photo.
24 Jan 2013: New version: makes the action buttons use less space, and unfix the top navigation bar

Retro button bar, title above photo, and other tweaks

After my previous user stylesheet to resolve some issues with Flickr's June 2010 redesign, I also had a request to reinstate the button bar above the photo. This had changed into the 'Actions' dropdown menu.

While this is not something that had bothered me, and I agreed with the reasons behind Flickr's decision here, I couldn't resist a challenge. Flickr's clean, structural HTML and extensive use of CSS3 makes it a pleasure to restyle.

It applies the following fixes:
(1) Reinstate title above photo
(2) Keep the 'photostream' film strip permanently open. (It's currently collapsed when you come from a different context, such as Contacts, Favorites, a set, or a group.)
(3) Reinstates the button bar above the photo (the button labels appear on mouseover)
(4) Moves the Prev/Zoom/Next and Share/Favorite buttons above the right-hand column

Flickr photo page redesign: old and new

Really just four changes (see notes above):
(1) Remove map for non-geotagged photos
(2) Reinstate title above photo
(3) Add another keyboard shortcut, to scroll down to the start of the picture
(4) Keep the 'photostream' film strip permanently open. (It's currently hidden when you come from a different context, such as Contacts or Favorites.)

Subtle redesign on BBC News homepage

They've removed the right-hand column from the first two rows, widening the lead story and greatly increasing the headline size. "Other top stories" have moved down to the 3rd row.

It looks like another acknowledgement that default screen resolutions have increased. They are no longer trying to put as many stories as possible above the 800x600 fold; instead they seem to be optimising the design for 1024x768 and up. (They had abandoned a design optimised for 640x480 in February 2003.)

I'll post a "before" picture for comparison tomorrow.
