Another specimen soaks up the warming rays of the sun. They never seem to land in photogenic locations but that aside they really are a stunning insect.

A Golden Ringed Dragonfly basks in the warm summer sun, in Hampshire's New Forest.

The River Avon burst its banks and the river was flooding into the surrounding fields. I was stood on a narrow bridge as the flood waters rose beneath me, watching some Banded Demoiselles when I noticed something being washed down with the current. I grabbed a long handled net and fished out this female Scarce Chaser, saving her from a watery grave. She was obviously in the process of laying eggs when she got washed away - if you look closely at the tip of her abdomen you can see the small cluster of yellow eggs.

An early start was rewarded by finding this very sleepy 4 Spot Chaser sat on a twig hoping for the sun to warm him up.

White Faced Darter 002

My first encounter with the rare and beautiful White Faced Darter.
The opportunity to see this rare dragonfly came recently thanks to Paul Ritchie who had a cancellation on his trip to Staffordshire. I had less than 24 hours notice but had no hesitation in accepting his kind offer.
It was a fantastic day with tenerals emerging and flying off into the heather almost constantly.
With strong winds, a peat bog underfoot and the darters resting in low lying heather - it made getting into a steady position for a good photograph very difficult.

Another 'first' for me this year - a Small Red Eye damselfly.
After a poor start to the Odonata season and a bad middle we seem to be ending on a high.

I must have Odonata Pox - I went over to Somerset today to scout out some possible landscape compositions for later this year and all I found were dragonflies - hundreds of them!
Well it would have been rude not to snap a few of them after they all came out to welcome me!

I came across this Black Tailed Skimmer moments after she had emerged from her exuvia. She rested for a couple of hours on this stem of grass, her maturation slowed down by the coolness of the day.

Common Club Tail Up Close

A rare and very localised species - the Common Club Tail dragonfly.
An adult individual crawls out of his overnight roost and into the warming rays of the spring sunshine, where I was waiting camera at the ready. An extremely fortunate capture!
