I swear this guy was constantly sizing me up to see if he could carry me back to the nest. I was just glad to get my shot and leave :) It was at least an inch long, probably closer to an inch and a half.

The size of the ant (one of the golden bum ones) gives you an idea of the size of the spider... can you just imagine the few seconds of maximum violence that determined the winner and loser here? How many of these life and death struggles are going on right now!?!

I ran across quite a few nests of these extra-green green-ants under logs where I was collecting firewood. I wonder if their sting is extra-potent... i'd take that any day over a bite from any of the numerous redback spiders I encountered.

Much much much more colourful than the kind i'm used to seeing near the coast on a daily basis...

This weird ant wanders around with his bum in the air, and I guess it looks like a spider. Sometimes I saw them have a bum stretch and then back to this position. It must be uncomfortable. But, I guess this mimicry helps keep them safe

Our made up name was the cannon ant 'cause he looked like he was gonna shoot you :P

This rattle ant (Polyrhachis australis) makes some additions to the entrance of their nest. The white substance it is putting in place is silk that the ant larvae produce on demand.

These guys were crazy - jumping all over the place ready to bite and sting. I made the mistake of waving a stick near this hole to try and get some sort of response and I ended up with 5 on my hand. Ouch.

He definitely stopped and fought instead of running away!

I got a Kast diffuser for my flash - like the Sto-fen ones. It works pretty well... I gave it a good test run yesterday. I still have the wide panel extended on the flash to spread the light, and the plastic diffuser still goes on ok. Certainly better than a tissue taped over the end... i'm gonna try another diffuser but I don't think it's practical for adventures in thick rainforest.
