On the party platers a host of food: crisp fried corn tortilla chip, house made refried bean (good balance flavours, thick but great texture), shredded lettuce/radish slices/picked red onions, chopped pork (incredibly tasty pork ends not used for the noodles' charsiu), contija cheese, crema and guacamole.

An incredible amount of snacktastic fun. Very good flavours and deal.

Appetizers

Renée S. Suen posted a photo:

To begin:
"Home made crunch papdi wafers, sweet potatoes, garbanzo peas, local avocados. Topped with tamarind yogurt chutney and dressed with street spices."
- a salad filled with a jungle of textures and dense fresh vegetable flavours. I can't stress how awesome those papdi wafers that were threaded throughout the chunky salad were - it was like the fried wonton strips found in congee only thicker, toastier, and tasted almost like they were made of chickpea flour. It was a textural party in the mouth.
I don't know if we were supposed to eat the endive or radicchio cup, but I did. They added bitter crispness to the already dense mix which I don't mind.

"Summer delight: Semolina Gol Gappa puffs - a light crunch but tempting & appetizing"
- thin puffed and crisp pita-like shell (but flavour and texture like a papadum) filled with a couple dollops of yogurt and other spices). It was interesting and almost like a pre-modernist take of what encapsulation could be (old school, ethic style). I don't think that was the point, but that's what crossed my mind. No science equipment needed. Just a bit of ingenuity.

($8)

Home-style comforts of warm white rice topped with chunks of firm tofu (if I recall correctly) and contija cheese, topped with a loose tomato sauce, half a sliced avocado (hmm.. they are rather magical fruits, aren't they - here they gave the overall clean course a meatier/denser mouthfeel without overwhelming the vegetable-based lightness of the dish), crema and pickled peppers. Quite substantial and satisfying.

This was also something that sous chef Geraldo Quintero had quite a bit when he used to be vegetarian. I found that note pretty cool.

Gift from the kitchen.

Green Colourology

Renée S. Suen posted a photo:

Intermezzo/dessert 1: supposedly a dish from 2003 that was created to embrace the concept of monochromatism. Apparently the chromatic part of the ingredients are "related to their taste aspect and the sensation produced: energetic, refreshing, vital, euphoric: Green chromology."

I can see how some might find this a little cerebral or precious, but I honestly find this new take, challenge and thematic pursuit as interesting and thrilling. It was also incredibly lovely on the palate and palette (with a matching thematic plate to boot).

The course was refreshing and fresh and alternated between green apple, avocado, pools of sweet eucalyptus and cream of lemon gel, Chartreuse candies, basil and sugar dusted mint sprigs that was capped with a quenelle of eucalyptus-lime ice cream (more like sherbet). It was subtle but lovely, embodying more tart than sweet flavours and was a great palate lifting intermezzo.

Side note: a couple potential Kriss signatures are here - shaved radishes and tiny fingerling potato chips. :P

Renée S. Suen posted a photo:

Artichoke, Fennel and Pea Salad ... a bunch of other greens, shaved radishes, mustard seeds, pea shoots, avocado puree, grana padano, etc

Just one of the specials of the evening enjoyed while hanging out on the patio with my visiting sister and JF. Snacks, cocktails and the patio are a very good mix.

Side note: a couple potential Kriss signatures are here - shaved radishes and tiny fingerling potato chips. :P
