The totems in Southeast Alaska represent the three groups of Native Americans: the Tlinghet,Haida,and Tsimphian. The totems do not represent a religion or cult but rather a historical record of the tribes. The tribes are made up of three major clans: the Wolf,Raven, and the Eagle. These societies are matrilineal and it is forbidden to marry within your clan. The cedar poles are found in almost every village in Southeast!

Bald eagle feeding on a salmon in Herring Creek on Revillagegado Island in Southeast Alaska. Most of the salmon that bald eagles feed on are spent or dead salmon that return to the creek to spawn and die.

Almost all the lakes in Southeast Alaska have Trumpeter swans, but lakes connected to saltwater estuaries have dozens. These large birds were once considered threatened in the US, but Alaska has a thriving population.

Young black bear near Hydaburg on Prince of Wales Island in southern Southeast Alaska. It was the first of dozens of bears that I would see on a 6 day trip. It was also the last I would see of the sun as it rained heavily all day long and snowed every evening for the entire trip.

Black bears didn't seem to mind the rain. It seemed that most of my fishing days on Revillagegado Island were spent watching bears catch fish. I am a creature of a cold,dry climate and found fishing in pouring rain and blowing wind a miserable affair. The bears never shared the fish either! Often they walked right past me with fish in mouth and took their catch to a grassy patch just a few yards away.

Little back bear cub. Mom just crossed the river and he is trying to figure it out. This is near Ketchikan Alaska. Ketchikan is a small town but very densely populated. Still, as long as there are salmon streams the bears will work their way down to the streams right in town. This is more likely to occur in the evening after the cruise ships and tour buses leave.

A sow and cub black bear enjoying and unusual sunny day in the normally dreary rainforest of southeastern Alaska. The island of Revillagegado where these black bears live can get as much as 220 inches of rainfall a year!

This young black bear at Herring Cove near Ketchikan Alaska got a little too curious. Tapping a tripod against my knee sent him on his way. Southeast Alaska has a healthy population of black bears. On Prince of Wales Island across from Ketchikan; black bear densities can exceed ten per square mile, and they can approach the size of Interior grizzlies. Lots of salmon--lots of bears!

A pair of Trumpeter swans at Ward Lake near Ketchikan Alaska. Alaska has both Trumpeter and Tundra swans. The Trumpeter swans are usually larger and have a red slash on their beak, and the beak extends all the way to the eye. It's best to identify the birds by their calls which are completely different because it's hard to evaluate size and not all Trumpeters have a red slash. Trumpeter swans are increasing in population in Alaska.

A little black bear that became lost and confused when a 50 pound neighborhood mutt scared a ton of bears off in six different directions. The dog had no interest in the bears only chasing the salmon in the outgoing tide pool.

Trumpeter swans feeding in Ward Lake near Ketchikan Alaska.There are usually a pair or two on every lake in Southeast Alaska, but lakes connected to the ocean have more feed and can support dozens of pairs of swans. Normally migratory some trumpeters now spend the entire year in Sotheast Alaska. When the lakes freeze they just move to saltwater estuaries to feed.

Alaska has Trumpeter Swans and Tundra Swans. This is a trumpeter swan. The Trumpeter has a beak which extends to the eye. They usually have a red slash on their beak. Photo taken at Ward Cove near Ketchikan Alaska.

Photo was taken in ketchikan Alaska with an old film camera, not the best quality. I took only one picture because the bear seemed nervous. Then I walked away. She joined her mother and returned to the nearby creek.
