Joshua Tree Formations

If the formations in the background of this image look like those in the Alabama Hills, it's because they are both composed of monzogranite and shared a similar set of geologic forces 100 million years ago.

Alabama Hills

Alabama Hills are a "range of hills" and rock formations near the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the Owens Valley, west of Lone Pine in Inyo County, California. Though geographically considered a range of hills, geologically they are a part of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

I like this view of the formations against the evening sky.

In case you are becoming bored with flower shots, here is a view of the Verde River near the start of the jeep road to Sycamore Canyon, Arizona. It's always a joy to see water in the Arizona desert, and this view of white peaks in the background is a change from the red rock that characterizes the area around Sedona.

Sunrise at the Bosque

Bosque del Apache, which means "woods of the Apache", was named for the people who often camped in the .riverside forest. It is most famous today as a national wildlife refuge where sandhill cranes and snow geese spend the winter. There are no cranes or geese in this image, but a beautiful November sunrise, nice silhouettes and reflections at the Bosque del Apache, New Mexico.

This photograph is dedicated to the memory of Principal oboist William Bennett of the San Francisco Symphony. Bill passed away yesterday after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage during his performance of the Strauss Oboe Concerto with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall last Saturday. Bill also taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

It has been said by many, including Danny Kaye in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" that the oboe is an "Ill wind that nobody blows good", but Bill proved that saying wrong every time he performed -- his solo and ensemble playing earned ovations from audiences around the world. His death is a huge loss to the world of classical music.

Samuel Barber used this beautiful text in a song he composed in 1972, the last song he ever wrote. We were privileged to hear baritone Thomas Hampson sing this last evening, accompanied by Wolfram Rieger. This photograph is dedicated to these two great musical artists.

Autumn Reflections on the Queets River

According to legend of the Queets and Quinault Indians, this river was originally called K'witzq, meaning "out of the dirt of the skin". The legend tells of the Kwate, the Great Spirit and Transformer, coming to the mouth of the river. After fording the cold river he rubbed his legs to restore circulation; small rolls of dirt formed under his hand. He threw them into the water and from these rolls of dirt a man and a woman emerged, becoming the ancestors of the Queets people. They were known as K'witzqu, because of the dirt from which their skin was made.

This was one of the more remote places we visited on our trip to the Olympic Peninsula. More to come ...

Carlsbad Caverns

Carlsbad Cavern is one of over 300 limestone caves in a fossil reef laid down by an inland sea 250 to 280 million years ago. The magnificent speleothems (cave formations) that continue to grow and decorate Carlsbad Cavern are due to rain and snowmelt soaking through limestone rock, then eventually dripping into and evaporating in a cave below. Those water drops have absorbed gasses and dissolved minerals from the soil and limestone above. Wherever that water drop evaporates and releases carbon dioxide in an air-filled cave, a small amount of mineral-mostly calcite, is left behind. This image, from the archives, is one of the formations in the Big Room, also known as the Hall of Giants.

Photographers love breaking storms in Yosemite Valley. We were especially lucky to have the clouds break at end of day, providing some spectacular light on Lost Arrow Spire, with Upper Yosemite Falls in shadow to the left. There is a light dusting of snow on the upper elevations, more snow and ice in the valley.

Yosemite Valley with Frost

The first image I'm uploading from our recent winter sojourn in Yosemite National park -- it's also the last one I took before we headed home this morning. A classic image from Valley View, I like the beautiful frost outlining the branches in the foreground and just across the Merced River. There is just a hint of mist rising from the meadow beyond the river. The shot was taken after 11:30 a.m., and the sun had yet to reach this part of the valley floor -- or it might not, given the low angle of the sun and the approaching winter storm from the west -- the clouds were already building up over the valley.

Birch trees arch over a little-traveled road. These beautiful trees reach straight for the sky, unless there is more light to the center, over a road or path. I loved the many stands of birch trees we saw on the Olympic Peninsula, and I wanted to photograph them in sunlight. This was taken near the end of our time there -- I hope you like it.

Sundown at the Bosque del Apache brings the sandhill cranes back to the flooded fields for the evening. I love the soft color in this tranquil scene with two cranes flying in to join their brethren.
