I love winter. I love pausing in the frigidity of snow and ice and feeling the calm chill meld with my skin. I love the touch of an icy breeze, the silence of snowflakes, the glistening of street lights on sparkling snow. In winter, my world in the mountains is shrouded and in the stillness I can understand myself the most.

Night of the Harvest Moon (Day 255/365)

Beautiful Uncertainty posted a photo:

Thanks to my dad for accompanying me down the road in the dark so I could take this photo.

There was the most gorgeous harvest moon I've ever seen on Monday (which is when I took this photo–I'm uploading it late). When I was driving home from my grandma's house, it was still very low in the sky and looked HUGE and so unreal. I wish I could have photographed it then, but I didn't have my camera with me! (And I don't support photographing and driving, although I could have pulled over.)

I've been experimenting with how to properly capture shots at night. I think I'm improving. I wish I could have captured the face of the moon AND the landscape in the same shot, though; however, I didn't want to increase the ISO so much that the shot go grainy, so this will have to do.

Any night photographers know anything else I could do besides increasing the ISO?

I did take other, individual photos of just the face of the moon, and I'm trying to merge one with this photo, so I can have the best of both worlds. So far my attempts aren't looking very realistic, though, so I'll spare you until they get better!

Seven Suns (Day 181/365)

Beautiful Uncertainty posted a photo:

When I went outside to photograph at dusk, I didn't have much hope of capturing any good shots. The low, flat light, plus the fact that all of our flowers seem to be going in or out of bloom, made it difficult to find a subject.

Then I spotted these tiny raindrops clinging to the tips of one of my favorite plants. Each individual drop was no larger than the eraser on a particularly thin pencil; some of the drops were the size of the tip of a pencil.

I increased the ISO a bit so I could take this shot handheld without creating crazy blur. For someone who has been photographing creatively for almost six years, you think I would have gotten better at holding a camera steady; alas, not so!

Can anyone guess what the large yellow bokeh comes from? Hint: It isn't actually the sun! ;)

Similar to Day 53, although not as winter-wonderland-y. Honestly, I tried to do something else for today's photo, but it didn't turn out; this shot was just randomly taken, but I thought I could work with it. It reminds me of Little Bohemia Lodge in the movie Public Enemies, for some reason: I guess the house, at night, surrounded by forest, gives off that kind of feel.

I've been experimenting with different styles of photography. I like trying new things, and I don't really like one style more than another; plus, learning new techniques is fun. =)

I love the snow. It transforms the surroundings into an ethereal, magical place.

It's especially pretty when, as in this photo, the street lights and peoples' house lights turn on and cause the snow to glow with color.

I spent awhile outside at dusk taking photographs; I had to come inside when my toes starting going numb! I could spend hours outside in the snow, just reveling in the peacefulness of it.

I love this decanter my grandma bought for me; I especially love the way light looks when it shines through it. I thought I would practice some dusk-time photos, and this is the perfect prop. I'm proud of myself: I actually held still while taking this photo! No tripod necessary. ;)
