Another long exposure, where I have worked to emphasize the moody quality of the drowned tree. This is another image I took remotely, using my iPhone as the remote shutter release for my Wi-Fi enabled 6D.

World Out of a Dream

Long exposures are unmatched for creating images full of drama. A long, snowy winter combined with a wet spring has produced very high water levels everywhere. The trees appear to be growing up right out of the river, which allowed me to catch some unique reflections. This two minute exposure has given me a perfectly smooth surface on which the light and shadows play.

One final interesting point - I was getting eaten alive by mosquitoes standing there holding my remote shutter release. The swarms were incredible. I thought, "I can't do this!" But then I thought of the Wi-Fi capability of the 6D and my iPhone sitting in my pocket. Will it work in Bulb mode for exposures longer than 30 seconds? The short answer is a resounding, "Yes"! I shot this image while sitting in my car (away from the mosquitoes) with my finger on the shutter release button...on my iPhone. Sometimes technology is a beautiful thing! I spotted fresh growth around an old, old barn while travelling. I had several great shots there, including this one. I love the combination of the elements and textures of decay combined contrasted with the bright green of the new growth in the vine. Something old, something new

Dawn, but not a traditional sunrise. Instead the sky is heavy, moody, and this brief moment of sunrise would only last as long as it took for the sun to climb above the cloud cover and grey would grip the day. But under the brooding sky was this moment of exquisite beauty.

I was traveling to a conference in Toronto and driving along in a very deserted but very beautiful stretch of country. When I saw this still lake, I had to stop for a moment. No time for filters or tripods, but enough to catch this lovely lake. The hardwoods are still bare, the grasses and reeds still dry, but they provided great accents for the rich hues of the evergreens. The overcast sky gave me nicely diffused light. Such perfect stillness and peace...

Baby Bluebell

Our first tiny blossoms are starting to appear, including these little bluebells. The whole plant stands about three inches (5 cm) tall, and the object to the left is one of the iron trellis legs in our garden - it is about one half inch in diameter (1 cm). Yet in the macro world these little blossoms are giants of beauty, and I am delighted to see them come and start brightening up my world.

Golden Lion Tamarin

This is the second in a series of images for the week from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. This one captures the rich color and fine detail of a Golden Lion Tamarin.

Processing technique #2: The power of dodge and burn. One of the challenges of photography is that the medium is two dimensional while our sight is 3 dimensional. The resulting "flatness"can keep an image from looking the way you remember it at capture. Having quality lenses that help blur the background helps - it produces separation between the subject and the background, but you can help add dimension by using dodge and burn. I took this image into Photoshop for that purpose only. I like Photoshop dodging and burning more than Lightroom's because of more finite control. Emphasizing light and dark areas this way adds more depth and nuance to the image, making it look more 3 dimensional...just like you remember. In this image I worked only on the fur of the Tamarin to add depth to the fur. The color here is all natural.

P.S. Like yesterday, this shot is through glass, so read up about the help of a polarizer to reduce reflection. ISO is even higher here (5000), but thanks to the 6D I have not had to do any kind of special noise reduction because there really isn't much!

Better than Winter

We've had an odd turn of weather, and were hit with a big snowstorm a couple of days ago that basically reversed all that spring has accomplished to date. In the middle of this storm I decided to go out hiking. I didn't see another soul for the hour and half that I was out (just the way I like it!) It was wintry, yes, but better. It wasn't as cold. The water is open in a lot of places, and the waterfowl have returned. A beaver was swimming through this pond, birds, geese, and varieties of ducks were flying in and out and paddling around. And all the while it snowed at various degrees of intensity. So while I'm not crazy about winter in spring, in some ways, this was better than winter.

One Day in Williamsburg

I captured this nicely moody image of the Capital Building in Williamsburg. It served as the state capital and legislature house for roughly 75 years (from 1705 to 1779). It is a beautiful building, and the framing between the towering bare branches was excellent. I've toned the image to emphasize the gloomy mood created by those branches.

We've had a taste of spring over the weekend, but nature played an April Fool's trick on us today. Blustery, freezing wind, periods of snow and rain, and an Arctic chill. Still, the one redeeming quality was a moody sky tonight with some nice nuance. I set up my tripod under a towering maple, screwed in my ND64 filter, and captured this image (while shivering). Sometimes winter has its revenge and leaves you with the blues...

I don't envy those whose responsibility it is to govern such a large and complex nation. As a leader myself, I know the complexity of leading even a relatively small group of people. We build shrines to our early leaders because they seemed to have answers. Will any of our modern leaders be enshrined, I wonder?

I had to do some business travel over the last couple days, and I drove in a lot of inclement weather. But storms often produce beautiful light. I was driving and spotted this frozen cascade. I have long wanted to capture such a sight, so I was happy to land this one.

We spent some time last week travelling on Washington, D.C.'s excellent Metro system. I didn't have a tripod, so I shot this long exposure of the arriving train into the Federal Triangle station handheld (thanks for great VC, Tamron!) I got just what I looking for, with the nameplate of the station staying clear despite the train cars moving by.

As the Ice Forms

This is another image I have been sitting on for a while. It was from earlier this winter as the ice was forming on the river. A long exposure helped ensure deep and vivid colors, and I hand blended multiple exposures to get the tonality that you see here. It's been a while since I have seen a sunrise like this, as the last several weeks have been persistently grey and and overcast, so it seemed like a good time to share this image. Enjoy.

We had a blizzard come through yesterday and pound us with a foot+ of snow. In the middle of the storm I went out shooting (of course). I saw a great color contrast (and ironic sign, considering the circumstance) that begged to be captured. I dragged the shutter somewhat (which the great VC on the Tamron allows) to capture the movement of the falling snow. The only pedestrian about was me :)

The words to this old song resonated in my mind as I processed this image of this old farmhouse that I have visited before. The vines have overgrown it, and, if you look through the windows, you will see the vines growing even inside. The more the ole' house decays, the more character it gains.

Foggy conditions are amongst my favorite to shoot in because it allows you to explore the artistic side. I drove to this section of road with natural elevations changes that I knew would provide the perspective I wanted for this image. I was not disappointed. The ashphalt perfectly disappears into the moody atmosphere below. A little mystery... P.S. This image is available for licensing through Getty Images
