The Galilee Maritime Service Harbor is dedicated to the preservation of Sausalito 's traditional working waterfront uses and creation of diverse public access opportunities. The on-going redevelopment of the site has created paths and viewing areas from which the public can enjoy views of the bay and marsh from the shore. Floating docks open to the public allow waterfront visitors to walk out over the water and view the interesting and historic boats berthed at Galilee.

When an ancient redwood falls to the forest floor a process of decay begins. This high-tanin wood can take decades to complete the transformation into new soil from which new trees and plants arise anew.

The coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is an ancient species dating back to the age of the dinosaurs. Distant biological memory of these reptilian creatures seems to live on in the deep recesses of these undisturbed woods.

Long before vineyards covered Napa Valley the area was inhabited by a giant race of weavers. They left behind a very large needle eye-hole threader, now on display in Yountville.
Judging from the size of the implement they must have stood as tall as skyscrapers!

A long pier extends several hundred yards into Richardson's Bay accessing numerous houseboat residents. The Sausalito houseboat lifestyle differs significantly from the stereotypical Marin experience.

No two houseboats are identical in appearance. Some are quite simple, others extraordinarily extravagant.
My two sons conspired together when they were preteens in an attempt to persuade us to move into a houseboat. Eventually, it was revealed (by the youngest of the two) that the reason was that there were no lawn chores involved in this property. I am guessing that this would have been their dream house.

The houseboat communities in Sausalito utilize piers extending into the sheltered Richardson's Bay. Each of the floating homes has a ramp access to the pier.

The Golden Gate Bridge celebrates it's 75th birthday. Remarkably, this iconic bridge was built and financed without federal and state assistance. It is now an integral part of communications from San Francisco to Marin and other points north of the Golden Gate Strait. Life would be much more difficult without this crucial link to San Francisco.

Historic Ships - Hyde Street Pier

The Hyde Street Pier is an historic ferry pier located on the northern waterfront of San Francisco, California, amidst the tourist zone of Fisherman's Wharf.
Prior to the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge, it was the principal automobile ferry terminal connecting San Francisco with Marin County by way of Sausalito to the north, and the East Bay by way of Berkeley.
Today, the pier is part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Various historical ships are anchored to the pier, some available for self-guided or docent-led tours. Among the ships on display or in storage are the Balclutha, an 1886 square rigged sailing ship, as well as C.A. Thayer, Eureka, Alma, Hercules, Eppleton Hall, and over one hundred smaller craft.

The Balclutha, an 1886 square rigged sailing ship, is located at Hyde Street Pier and is part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. It used to sail from Boston to San Francisco before the Panama Canal was constructed, a trip that took over 120 days.

Sausalito is well-known for its houseboat communities along the extensive waterfront of this quaint town. The community living in these unique homes is diverse and includes bohemians, artists and nonconformists. My two sons once wanted the family to move into one of these floating structures--their rationale?--there was no lawn to be mowed (their weekly chore). This seemed to be a perfectly good reason for a 10-year old.

The residents formed a non-profit corporation and bought the land and water parcels from the developer. After 18 years of negotiation with the City and the BCDC, the Association received permits to build a legal live-aboard marina based on the premise that by providing low-cost housing to artists and maritime workers it was helping to preserve the working Sausalito waterfront. Financing and construction took five more years. Member boats moved to the new marina in December 2003.
