an image from last fall. well, actually seven images, merged into one using HDR Efex Pro, and then saturated beyond earthly recognition. more art at this point than photography, but hopefully still pleasing to the eye.

a rainy and foggy day off. paris mountain state park is this gem of a park near downtown greenville where there are trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. and plenty of woods to get lost in (literally, at least for a half hour or so). when the fog moved on, i found myself shooting this grove of trees really intrigued with the lichen. when the sun popped out for about 20 seconds, the lichen became the highlights of the scene. i (obviously) went a little crazy in post bringing it out as much as i could (adjusting the green levels), as well as running it through color efex pro 3 for the glamour glow.

i'm interested in your opinion -- too much? you won't hurt my feelings (besides i could probably delete your comment ;)

should definitely be viewed on black.

swan lake

ninety minutes before this shot i could not even have imagined any color at all at sunset. i was shooting up at table rock state park trying to capture some autumn magic, and while riding back to greenville, watched as the light in the sky transformed. by the time we reached furman university, the sunset was really coming together nicely. a last second decision had us pulling off the highway and onto campus; this is a common comp and we were just moments away. as i set up the tripod, eyeing the swans across the lake, i asked my partner to grab a few of ham bone's treats. i finished setting up as (organic) dog treats were crumbled and sown. recognizing the opportunity of being fed, the swan glided gracefully into position.

we shot for about ten minutes, enjoying the light, as more and more students, each armed with a cell phone or a tablet, also captured the scene.

for processing (in aperture), i pulled in the highlights and used the dodge tool on the clock tower, swan, and their shadows. i used the clone tool to remove street lights on the far side of the lake, as well as a lamp which illuminates the clock tower from the left side. noise was reduced, contrast was reduced slightly, the image was sharpened, and finally a strong vignette was added.

i was kinda hoping to get to the mountains this autumn, but instead found myself taking vacation at the beach for a long weekend.

of course i had envisioned vibrant sunrises every morning; as it turned out, this was the only morning with any sort of color at all; guess i'll just need to go back and try again (no arm twisting required).

i liked this shot because it incorporates my roommate and our dog for added perspective.

finally got around to camping this summer; this time in North Carolina outside of Cherokee near the Smoky Mountain NP.

the weather was a mix of thick fog and rain with the exception of the night we arrived, when we were treated to this sunset.

i really hope to get back up there this fall.

sometimes the wind on lake champlain is so powerful that it churns up waves which march toward shore with a near constant size and a steady rhythm; this wasn't quite one of these days...

SEP was used to convert the image to b/w using cyanotype toning, and then level and curve adjustments were applied in order to add some drama to the stormy scene.

another image from Dupont State Forest in Transylvania County NC; this is a side shot of Hooker Falls.

this single RAW image really benefited by pulling in the highlights which allowed more contrast to be revealed in the cascade.

A perspective crop was also applied in CS5 as well as some dodging of the foreground flow.

in between rain showers i was treated to some super soft light and nice atmospheric conditions in DuPont State Forest, NC.

i usually can't take ham bone with me if i'm going out to shoot photos, but he insisted he come along on a recent frosty morning.

he plopped down in the frame and i was able to capture this as he watched the traffic passing by.

a friend of mine called this a moody shot that felt of desolation; what's your opinion?

santa brought me a speedlite for christmas. so even though i haven't been successful at being outdoors in beautiful places during the the golden times, i have been able to follow ham bone around the house with my camera and flash, acting like some of demented paparazzi-farian.

i hope 2012 is already being good to you.
