The colour and tonality straight out of camera from the D800 is incredible. Digital has matured to such a stage now it has truly left film behind.

Sometimes I feel it is such a tragedy to see so many folk convert every long exposure to a B&W. I just love the colour the real world provides. This is basically what I got out of camera, with a small contrast adjustment.

I love this spot, standing in Greenock, overlooking Gourock - West Coast of Scotland. I just keep coming back here, there aren't many viewpoints like this that overlook lochs and mountains and have this sort of character.
This shot is a 4 and a half minute exposure, difficult when there is a wind to keep it all steady and sharp. Yes, I even used f/22 in the middle of the night.

I took this picture early morning. At first when I looked at the image on the computer and noticed the drool I thought the shot was ruined but I actually think it helps make it.

I have always loved black and white photography, for portraiture specifically. B&W allows the distraction of colour to see an image for what it really is, areas of dark and light; contrast and tonality. For me, the processing of an image especially for portraiture should be subtle and compliment your subject as much as possible. I lightened the shadow areas in this image, given the great latitude in a D800 file this is easy to do. And basically, that's it. Sometimes you can process too much...

Skipped past this one that I took a few weeks ago as didn't think it was anything special but think I like it a little more now than when I first took it. With the Nikon D800 it really is easy to capture a scene as it looks to the human eye since it has a huge 14.4 stop dynamic range. The main thing to remember is to capture the highlights as there isn't much wiggle room here if they are blown. Shadows can be moved in post if needed and are able to be lightened vastly if required. This shot is more or less as seen, with little adjustment. The only area not recorded is the disc of the sun, everywhere else has details intact - I have added a tiny bit of contrast.

Some would say I overuse depth of field effects but it's one of the reasons I fell in love with 35mm photography in particular. Due to the huge sensor size (same as the film days) we are able to control dof in a beautiful way, and even more so with a fast prime lens. This is shot wide open at f/1.4 and focused on the eyes - if you look at the carpet you can see the tiny focal plane that exists in this picture. The bokeh of the professional 85mm f/1.4 lens from Nikon is incredible as you can see in the out of focus elements in the rear of the picture. Colours have been left subtle and typically for when I am photographing people - unsaturated. For me it tends to lend itself to a more pleasing picture.
