"Blossoming Orchard"

Blossoming apple trees... what a beautiful sight to behold. It's amazing how fast they seemed to make their annual appearance over the course of a couple of days. Notre Dame Orchard in Alfred, Maine is a favorite stop of mine. I love this access road and how it visually draws you deeper into the orchard. The bonus is when I can manage to capture the scene with an interesting sky.

I felt the need to try something a little different this past weekend and get up close to nature; looking for it's often overlooked beauty. I've been feeling the urge to push my creative way of thinking and seeing things around me; trying to look past the big picture and set myself apart from all the other landscape photographers. It's a constant experiment to figure out where I fit in to all of this; if indeed I do fit in. It's a long, slow road to find the answer... if it can actually be answered. As long as I can feel free and happy and relaxed behind the camera, I am willing to take as long as needed to find the answers.

The intricate patterns of ice, covering the lakes and ponds we walk on, skate on, and fish on. It usually goes unnoticed, taken for granted, and used at face value. Next time you're on the ice; smooth, dark, and free of snow, stop for a moment and look down at it's beauty and essence! You won't be disappointed!

I was finally able to make it back to this spot during a snowfall. There's not too many stand out spots along my normal routes to work, but I really like this one; the old truck left out in the field, the stone wall and just the overall layout of the trees. Days like this really make me wish I could get out more often to some different areas. I have so many ideas flooding my mind throughout the day! All in good time I suppose... Enjoy your night everyone!

My latest, creative endeavor which involved much thought to the back story of the image. Can you tie all of the elements together which tell the story? (Ohhhhh... check out the Shipyard Prelude print in the background too!!!) :)

Lighting info: 1 Nissin Di866 speedlight mounted to my left, 4 feet high and 4 feet away. Speedlight was fired, full power, through Interfit 24x31 softbox with inner diffuser and rectangular mask attached. Softbox was positioned against venitian blinds which were adjusted 2/3 closed. A second flash, 1 Interfit Stellar-Xtreme 300 ws monolight was mounted camera left and fired, 1/64 power, through Interfit 39" octobox. Softbox was positioned to feather light across the table and add some fill light to the front of me, without adding light to the background. Both flashes were fired remotely via Impact PowerSync 16 radio slaves. Overhead light was one soft white CFL mounted in a 6 inch reflector. Fog machine was used to add haze to the scene.

My awesome wife hard at work in the kitchen; baking away to have some great tasting goodies on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Yeah.... I couldn't resist this photo op!

Lighting info: One Nissin Di866 speedlight placed camera right, 2 feet away and 5 feet above cookies. Flash was set on Manual AV mode at F13 and 24 mm and fired, via Impact Power Sync 16 radio slave, through Interfit 24x32 softbox with round mask attached. Foam core board was used to add fill light camera left.

Local, specialty toy store located in Limerick village. I just love the window displays of stores like this! Throw in a fresh coating of snow, it just feels so magical!The only way to capture this was at night... the lights blazing away... exposing all of the treasures which lie inside.

Took a few back roads on my way to work yesterday morning and ran across this nice little setting along Patterson Rd in Limerick. The sun had just come up and was still casting a golden light which enhanced the foliage along the edge of this field. Once again, the fog was amazing on this morning and was able to capture some of it lingering around the end of the field.

The stone bridge I have photographed during flooding and in the winter. With the water level low I was able to get down along the rocks and was fortunate to have some moss and fallen leaves in the foreground.

Nothing like a calm pond to cast a mirror like reflection of a tree slowly transforming into it's autumn colors; only to be stripped of all it's beauty in preparation of a long, cold winter.

You can just imagine how happy I was to come across this. I could never seem to get everything to come together to make this scene a worthy capture. Finally... I got it all today; the colors, fog, and sheen on the stone wall from all the rain we've been having! The fog which is diffusing the distant trees really help to make the front two pop!

There's just something about that colorful fall foliage being illuminated by low angled sunlight. The golden glow of the ferns caught my eye as I was driving by this morning so I had to turn around.

So this past weekend was Halloween weekend at Acres of Wildlife Campground in Steep Falls, Maine. My father LOVES to decorate and go all out and his site looked great as it always does. This year he stepped it up and dressed up as a pirate as he handed out candy to all the trick or treaters. His pirate setup was the perfect posing prop for me to take his portrait. I can't wait until next year when we will be back there camping for Halloween weekend again!

Lighting info: Scene was illuminated with one Nissin Di866 speedlight through a 24"x32" Interfit softbox at full power and 28mm zoom. Speedlight was mounted to an Interfit Strobies flash bracket on an 10' Impact air cushioned stand positioned camera left at approximately 5 1/2 feet high and 6' to 8' from subject. Flash was fired via Impact PowerSync 16 radio slave.

"Good Morning Limerick"

As I pulled up to the overlook on Rt 5 in Limerick, Maine I was too late for the sunrise, but was treated to a second one as the sun reappeared from behind a cloud bank just above the horizon. I managed to get this one shot before the sun became too intense and I chose to recompose with it behind the sign.

One of the perks of having to go into work early these past couple of days is I was finally out of the house in time for a sunrise! This morning I ran up to the scenic overlook on Rt 5 in Limerick, Maine. I just missed the sunrise over the horizon, but lucky for me there was a nice cloud bank just above it to give me a second viewing of it. Thank you to John & Marie Carroll for a beautiful overlook!

I managed to have a bit thicker cloud cover during this shot, but it was still back light extremely well by the full moon. I love how the sky is just a chaotic, swirling mass as a result of a lengthy exposure.

"Moonburst"

Another long exposure of the sky in Naples, Maine during our Labor Day weekend camping trip. I particularly like this one due to the fact I was able to place the brightly shining full moon behind the tree branch just enough to create a moonburst effect.

Spent the long weekend in Naples, Maine....last camping trip for the year. The full moon was complimented by some excellent clouds, some of which were moving quite fast. A bonus to camping between lakes this time of year.
