Past the lodge, the creek’s voice mingles with those of kids and cars on I-84. Just before the parking lot, the exhausted water runs into its first manmade obstacle: a footpath linking the lot to the falls. Before the interstate was built 50 years ago, the creek flowed straight into the Columbia. Pink salmon still gather to spawn at that spot. Today, the creek gurgles as it bends 90 degrees and glides west into Benson Lake. Every two years, engineers have to dredge the creek so it doesn’t flood the footpath. At the west end of the lake, the stream nudges against the Interstate until it finds a culvert under the highway.

The long plunge begins as white noise, then rips into ribbons of sound, scraping, tearing, cracking on the way down. Streaks of water along the sides billow in slow motion or evaporate into the saturated air before hitting the ground. Thunder and mist erupt at the bottom.

A tributary clatters down the canyon wall, gurgling under a snow bridge and into the clear, cold creek. Today, these waters have their own willpower: decisive, muscular, pure instinct. They are not life-giving. They’re fishless, birdless, gnatless. We don’t see another living creature up here. I may be 78 percent water myself, but I want no relationship with this creek today, except to stay out of it.
