This really isn't my kind of shot but I thought it would be fun to show the homes on that bluff. The real estate sales sign made me take the picture, it reads: "Second homes starting at 1.2 Million Dollars"

The Fisherman

After taking this, I had to walk the shoreline for about 1/2 a mile before I get to my 200 yard high, vertical goat trail. The rocks are large, wet and sharp. You have to concentrate or you will get hurt very quickly. There is little chance of being found for days and mobile service is terrible. With my head down and eyes three steps ahead of me, I heard a bubbling noise followed by a presence. I looked to the water three yards to my right and bubbles were slowly followed by a head coming through the surface. Stopped in my tracks I had to watch in disbelief. A man in a wet-suit with a spear gun slowly came out of the water. As he stepped onto dry land he took off his mask, put down his 4 foot gun and said, "did you catch a good sunset?"
I responded; I think so, did you get the bad guys?" We both smiled and I walked away. I'll never forget that surreal moment.

Hermosa Beach, Ca
I was late to the party and the missed the really bright and vibrant colors. The window was closing so and I knew 40 other photographers already captured this once a year sunset. To set my shot apart from the rest I set m camera to timer mode and ran toward it to make these footprints.
There's a little photomatix and heavy dodging and burning in this too....just on the sand.

I haven't really been able to get out and shoot lately. The skies have been terribly dull and I really don't have a working wide angle lens. I saw some interesting light on this building in El Segundo so I pulled over to take this long exposure from the sidewalk. It took less than one minute for a security creep to run out and tell me to stop. Honestly, it's not worth arguing anymore, I completely ignored him.....it really pissed him off.

I haven't posted here in a while because I don't have a working wide angle lens and I really haven't been inspired to shoot anything.. The summer skies in LA have been blah. I need to travel.
This is San Francisco. If I could afford it, I would move there in a heartbeat. I worked on a film project there a couple weeks ago. I must admit, shooting video is much more difficult than photography. Focus tracking at f2.8 with a DSLR is not easy.

Erie Canal Oil

This is the Erie Canal...it's quaint and the surrounding towns are old. I thought the 12 layers of texture to make this look like an oil painting fit the scene nicely. Works for me anyway, I'm happy with this one. In the right frame, i think it would look very nice in your living room or office. Possibly your kitchen, yeah that's it, your kitchen. This is where I grew up... My recent trip was for a family funeral and it was very difficult. I only had one night to get the camera out so I went for the big panorama. I was lucky to get this sunset....

I created a massive, elaborate, vertorama, cityscape that took me 3 hours to process. When finished, I hated it so I deleted it. This is the only part I found remotely interesting in the end. I'm not really feeling it lately, very uninspired, I think I just need to get out of L.A. for a while.

Good little sunset tonight. I thought that I should post something because I have a feeling that we won't see any clouds for a long time. Believe it or not, I removed the color cast from this. You should have been there with me, everything was blue. I think the air itself was blue for a few minutes.

This is the inside of THIS cable car. It's a Los Angeles land mark called Angeles Flight< I was excited to ride it by myself for only fifty cents. I sat there alone for ten minute before a homeless man explained that it was broken. I gave him the fifty cents.
I'm not sure if this one is too busy...at first glance, it gives me a headache. When I blow it up and look at the detail, I like it...what do you think?

Still Sun

This is one of those "I hate nature" moments for me. If the sun would have waited another 1/2 hour to set, this would have been a magnificent sunset because he horizon was just about to clear and the illuminated atmosphere would have lit up those clouds like the Vegas strip. li. If you look closely, you can see the sun poking through the clouds, taunting me, toying with me, laughing at me. Maybe I owe her money, I'll have to check with my accountant.
No need for Photomatix on this one, just some exposure processing in ACR. Out of the camera, the foreground was almost black. I was able to selectively increase the exposure as much as 4 stops, it's like using a filter system without all the cumbersome filters. The colors and white balance are right out of the camera. According to Lightroom, not one pixel is blown out. Yet, still kind of boring.

Wow, you guys really liked that last one I posted. Thanks you so much for all the comments, I really appreciate it.
A delayed flight allowed me time to go get this one tonight. This sunset was so colorful that I had to desaturate this...looked like an explosion.

LA Financial District

This would have been cool with some lightning in it, huh? I think every amateur photographer in LA has stood in this spot and took this picture. I'm not a big fan of shooting what's already been photographed but in this case, I couldn't help myself.
I also wanted to see a version with the angle of the buildings corrected. I don't like converging lines on cityscapes... I'm not saying it's wrong to leave them, I just don't like them.
The traffic on the bridge causes a little shake. I had to perform a little blur reduction surgery on the patient.

I parked my car and grabbed my gear. Some guy yelled, "are you going to take pictures? I'll see you down there, I'm getting my Canon, what's that you got there, is that a Nikon? I've got that HDR on my Canon, I'll see you down at the pier and show it to you." So glad he never showed up.

I grabbed this photo as a background for a composite but it's the only picture I took. The sun ran away right after this shot. I was determined to get something worth printing tonight. So after an hour of tinkering in Photoshop, here it is. I call this technique: Polishing a Turd.

Metro Spot

Whenever we go a week with no clouds in LA, I start looking indoors for inspiration. This is the fourth time I've went to my fallback; Metro stations. This is the North Hollywood station and I strongly suggest you don't go during rush hour. The amount of time I spent in the car for this image makes me consider therapy. Clearly an HDR vertorama with some added light and a ridiculous amount of work to get the color balance correct. 20 exposures all together.
As I was taking this, a man came up and said "72, 72 stairs in front of you. I know because I've climbed them everyday for 12 years. Not anymore, it's my last day. I retired but I'll always remember those stairs." I wonder why he didn't use the escalator.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

San Luis Rey Mission was founded on June 13, 1798 by Father Fermin Lasuen. It was the ninth and last mission Father Lasuen founded, and one of the last built in California, number eighteen out of twenty one.

This is an HDR vertorama, the top of this image was actually behind where I was standing...

I was on my way from Riverside to LA and missed a turn because I was on the phone. I didn't notice I was going the wrong way until I saw signs for San Diego. I went 200 miles out of the way. I immediately decided to stick around 5 hours for the sunset. I found this old Mission on the way to Steve Skinners house..
Off to New York for a funeral now, I hope to get some time in the city with my camera and tripod.
