Another Place

. Andrew Dunn . posted a photo:

( Best viewed large on black - unless you have a smallish monitor )

One of the one hundred cast iron figures that make up Antony Gormley's installation Another Place. Each sculpture is cast from a mould of Gormley's body and they all face staring out to sea. Since the tide covers each statue twice a day, the surface is covered with a patchwork of barnacles and rust.

The colours here are natural, with just some contrast adjustments. Although this is a late twilight shot, the light isn't really coming from the sunset - rather its coming from the low clouds reflecting the light spilling out from the high pressure sodium lights floodlighting Seaforth docks in the background. A hand held flash was then used to pick out some more detail on the sculpture.

One and Other is an installation by Antony Gormley at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

In common with many of Gormley's sculptures the figure is cast from a mould made using his own body. One and Other is cast in iron which rusts to give a deep orange patina. The figure stands on a pillar some 10 meters off the ground, so that from the right angle he can be seen to be living amoungst the trees.

One of the one hundred cast iron figures that make up Antony Gormley's installation Another Place. The life sized figures stand on Crosby beach, just north of Liverpool. They all face the same way, staring out into the Irish Sea and most of them are encrusted with barnacles since they submerged by the tide every day.

The sculptures were due to be removed at the end of 2006, but they have struck a chord with the public. In fact they have been sufficiently very popular that there was a petition to retain the work permanently, or at least keep them until Liverpool celebrates being European City of Culture in 2008.

The news this weekend is that the sculptures have received planning permission to stay.
