Another Banksy (see Exit Through the Gift Shop), this one on 9the and Howard. I am not sure who "otter" is but he has put his mark on almost all of the Banksy's in town.

Here is another Banksy that I found (see Exit Through the Gift Shop), on the side of a building in a locked parking lot on the corner of Erie and Mission (near 14th). As it turns out, the building that it is on is going to be opening as an art gallery in a couple months, so the owners are very happy with the Banksy on the side!

#130 Explore 5/2/10

Here is the next Banksy that I found (see Exit Through the Gift Shop), in Chinatown. When I got there, the owners of the building that it was painted one were in the middle of restoring it from a graffiti attack. They said that they spend an average of 20 hours a week scrubbing off graffiti that people leave but they do it because they think it is art and they don’t want it destroyed. I am not sure how this looked when they got to it, but I am very glad that they are preserving it. Below are other pictures of the piece, probably my favorite in SF.

Before I saw Exit Through the Gift Shop, I was familiar with Banksy , but hadn’t really formed any opinion of him other than “he seems cool”. Now I am just short of obsessed (and yes, late to the party). Not only is the movie a really interesting and illuminating take on the art world but it is also a really strange portrait of an art movement that I think I had taken for granted.

Anyway, knowing there are some Banksys (Banksies?) around town, i am excited to find and photograph them. This is probably the best known (on 19th and Valencia in The Mission) and the hardest to photograph (unless you are on the roof of the adjoining building). The whole thing reads “This’ll Look Nice When It’s Framed”

I am off today to photograph the others
