Sierra Madre Surreal Sunset

We get a lot of great sunsets down here in southern California, so I figured I'd try various different ways of capturing them. I don't do a lot of HDR, and it's definitely best when tripod-mounted. But since even my current pocket camera can exposure bracket three shots in less than a second, and I didn't have a tripod on me at the time, I thought I'd give a hand-held JPEG, small-sensor HDR sunset image a shot. You do what you can with the tools you have on you.

And yes, this camera does do in-camera HDR. But it is entirely automated, and the manual mode does not work with it. So it only produces acceptable results in certain situations, and a high contrast sunset scene like this one is not one of those.

Three-shot, hand-held HDR, taken with my Sony HX9V, small-sensor superzoom, merged and tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 4.2.

Honolulu sunset, crescent moon

Sunset colors light up the western sky as night falls on downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. Seen from the south side of Punchbowl Crater.

Digging through the archives, uncovered this one from our summer trip out that way a couple of years back. I shot this with my wife's pocket camera, nothing fancy. Then ran it through PSE9 for a little noise reduction and a cooling filter to tame an overly warm sky, and bring things back to how they looked to the naked eye.

Deep, swirling sunrise colors

Cypress, pine, and palm tree silhouettes surrounded by color, just before sunrise in Sierra Madre, California. One of the last great sunrises I caught before those cypresses became permanently bent and twisted by the sudden, unprecedented, weekend-long hurricane-force windstorm later in the fall.

Overcast sunrise sky on fire the day of a big storm in Sierra Madre, California. There was just enough of a gap near the horizon to let the light through right around dawn -- enough to illuminate the underside of the clouds all across the eastern sky. It really looked like a wildfire, and all I could think of was this song.

The eastern sky this morning from my balcony.

Taken with my iPhone 4S in the Hipstamatic app. All processing is done BEFORE the shot by choosing the "lens" and "film". In this case, Lucifer VI and Kodot XGrizzled, respectively.
