There's nothing quite like a sunrise after a southern California storm. All kinds of varying cloud strata that catch and diffract all of the dawn light and illuminate the sky in a nearly neon display of color. Then it's just look for a tree and wait for a bird to land. Here it's an American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) in an Italian cypress.

Cypress, pine, and palm tree silhouettes surrounded by color, just before sunrise in Sierra Madre, California. One of the last great sunrises I caught before those cypresses became permanently bent and twisted by the sudden, unprecedented, weekend-long hurricane-force windstorm later in the fall.

Overcast sunrise sky on fire the day of a big storm in Sierra Madre, California. There was just enough of a gap near the horizon to let the light through right around dawn -- enough to illuminate the underside of the clouds all across the eastern sky. It really looked like a wildfire, and all I could think of was this song.

Yesterday was my birthday, and I couldn't think of any better image to celebrate the beginning of a new year than this final installment in my Makapu`u sunrise series. Hopefully this year will bring plenty of opportunities to go back and visit this spot and to shoot plenty of other great spots like it.

This was the best I could do with one shot (non-HDR), to balance the exposure. I let the area around the sun be blown out in order to capture enough recoverable detail in the foreground and along the cliff face. For the others in the series, which tend toward darker exposures and silhouettes, click on the "Hawaiian Holidays" set to the right.

This one is definitely best seen large on black: click on the photo, or hit the "L" key on your keyboard.
