Just across the Hudson river from millions of people, just myself and a few lonely gulls on an abandoned pier enjoy a view of the bright lights.

Unfortunately I didn't have a tripod, so to get the the shots I had to set my camera on timer mode and place it on top of a post, but it was tilted a bit in opposite directions resulting in a panorama that can't be cropped to a rectangle without losing vital elements Thus the unusual overlayed shape.

This is the famous AMNH 5027 specimen found in 1907 by Barnum Brown in Montana. Displayed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It had the first complete Tyrannosaur skull found.

Looking Out Through the Golden Door

Jason (Audrey's Dad) posted a photo:

The thought provoking view south towards lower Manhattan from the Empire State Building, with so many monuments of American history both to see and tragically absent. The stage of anguish and of hope, and hopefully forever a beacon of liberty.

The New Colossus

...Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Looking Out Through the Golden Door

The thought provoking view south towards lower Manhattan from the Empire State Building, with so many monuments of American history both to see and tragically absent. The stage of anguish and of hope, and hopefully forever a beacon of liberty.

The New Colossus

...Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Empire View

Jason (Audrey's Dad) posted a photo:

The most touristy thing I did in NY was definitely the hour long wait and ascent to the Empire State Building observation decks. Of course I took shots at all the compass positions, but it was hazy and close to midday so none are spectacular and definately none are original.

This view looking NE had the most clarity as the light was behind me and has a good collection of some of the more famous landmarks so I fired up ol' Photoshop and gave it a go enhancing the color and contrast as well as doing some lens distortion fixes for somewhat straight verticals. I hope it's not too cliché. I'll probably just post one more looking south and maybe an architectural detail shot.

I could see getting some spectacular shots as it is an awe inspiring viewpoint, maybe a sunset with a PC lens for no distortion. That would be sweet.

A late night electrical storm blew over Manhattan so I set up my camera braced in the window sill and managed to get at least one decent shot.

About a week later a stronger storm actually blew down trees in Central Park that you might have seen on the news.

Back from a great trip to NYC, and looking forward to catching up with friends and contacts photos, I saw some great ones briefly on my phone while away!

Here is an out of photostream order preview from my last night in town, it's the Midtown Manhattan skyline as seen from across the Hudson River in Weehawken/Port Imperial New Jersey. It was really an awe inspiring sight and now the buildings in Portland seem a whole lot smaller! Improvised a support for the long exposure with the camera on time delay and balanced on a park pillar.

Now to catch my photostream up in order and then back to the rest of my NY/NJ/PA ones soon...
