Aurora time-lapses - 14 November 2012

A couple of time-lapses of the recent aurora activity. The first sequence is rather short because I stopped it early due to cloud rolling in... and then the activity increased in brightness and colour so I started again until the battery ran out.

At 9 secs is the trail of the only aeroplane I saw going right through the middle of the frame - typical!

An enjoyable view in person especially while listening to some suitably ambient music to drown-out the noisy whooshing turbine blades. :-)

Artificial light dominates again

The turbine warning lights dominate but the aurora did put on a good show.

I was shooting time-lapse frames every 30s at ISO 1600 and didn't apply in-camera noise reduction so this frame was very noisy, i.e. don't look too closely! I've cleaned up the most obvious dead pixels.

The right autumnal weather conditions of warm evening sun, dry with no wind, allowed this brief frenzy of insect activity. The strong backlighting revealed them to my eyes as mesmerising, energetic spheres of light.

The insect trails effect was achieved with a fading star trails Photoshop action written by Owen Scharlotte.

Winter arrived for all of two minutes. This was filmed at 720p 60fps and then slowed to 30fps, so yes, the snow was really speeding past. Hardly worth uploading here as even in "HD" Flickr's re-compression has killed the details.

I like how the higher cloud seems to coming out of the chimney.
