Slightly more beat up than my usual picks, but it would've been utterly churlish to refuse this book for a mere 20p at one of my favourite local chazza shops... especially given the plethora of lovely old retouched industrial photographs inside, most of which celebrate the innovations and technological achievements of a Britain that was indeed once Great and exciting enough that children wanted to learn about it.

If this were a Mid-Century Russian power station there'd be enormous pot plants all along the walkways - I have a huge book on the 'Electrification of the USSR' or 'электрификация ссср' full of illustrations like this, but with more greenery - which I think is a really nice consideration.

Apparently 'Town Gas' was still considered relevant enough to learn about in 1965, despite our first undersea reserves of the stuff being discovered off the coast of East Anglia that very year.

I wish a few old disused Town Gas Works still existed - they look great fun to have a mooch around with a camera.
