Donald Stewart - WW2 tank traps (2011)

Graham Barnes [Cuileag] posted a photo:

Two years ago at the biennial conference of the Royal Photographic Society (Scotland) I met Donald Stewart for the first time. Donald had recently been awarded a Fellowship of the RPS for a set of images that beautifully recorded the decaying WW2 coastal defences in Scotland. Some of these images can be viewed here:- scottish-photographers.com/galleries/donald-stewart. I invited Donald to visit my locality to make images of these tank traps where I made this image of him.

We met again at the conference 18-19th May 2013 and I was reminded that I have never published this image. I'm sure that as Chair of the RPS Historical Group he likes a bit of patina to develop before he thinks anything is worth looking at!

It looks as if the old-time pagan nostrums are still being prepared here in Scotland. It's great to see that some folk are still keeping the old remedies alive. Just don't try and foist them on the public until their efficacy has been established using the scientific method!

I made this photograph of myself (circa 1982) using a Lubitel medium format, twin lens reflex camera. With a tripod and the long self-timer / delay I was able to compose the image and then run back up through the boulders before the camera fired.

This short section of the descent towards Loch Aineort through the narrow gully is one of my favourite places in Uibhist. It is 'magical', not least because it is one of the few places where wild, native trees are able to grow, sheltered from hurricane force winds and predation from sheep and deer.

To help break in some newly dug ground and to provide green manure I scattered annual lupin seeds three weeks ago. Now the seedlings are about 10mm high and the tap roots are about 80mm long. The cotyledons are quite thick when compared with those of many other garden seedlings and I see that a slug has already had a small meal from these.

I was delighted yesterday to receive, in the mail, three A4-size prints of myself (on the left here) taken on a rock climbing trip to Norway. Unfortunately I can't remember Tom Broome who kindly sent me the pictures. He said "Found you at last after 40 years! Here are some pictures of you and me ... you may never have known about them!". It was such a pleasant surprise and what great images. It's fantastic to see a smiley and youthful version of myself again. If you can see this on Flickr THANK YOU TOM!!

I am the climber on the right and the photo was made just before we moved out of the rockfall zone onto the slabby wall to the right of the picture to start the rocking climbing of Sondre Trolltind. I remember well the trip to Norway and the freezing night bivouacked in plastic bags on a 45 degree sloping 'ledge' but I still can't remember who I was climbing with ... that's awful! Thank you Tom Broome for sending me the great images ... you've made me feel young again!

Here is the accompanying text for this image in the WORLDWIDE PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY 2013 online exhibition:-

"No model available so resorted to the time-honoured self-portrait. I now exclusively use modern DSLRs (that cope well in low-light), but for my personal work I often edit images in Photoshop to imitate poor quality cameras and dodgey darkroom processing."

"I used an old Canon 40D with plastic body cap / aluminium pinhole and UV filter gaffer-taped on to prevent dust being sucked into the camera. The deliberate under-exposure, to produce noise, was for 2 seconds at ISO1600. Added Kodak TX 400ASA film grain and duo-toning in Photoshop."

In preparation for a photo-shoot at the forthcoming Annual Competition of the Lowland and Border Pipers' Society my friend Pete Stewart and I had a very interesting chat. I talked about image composition, lighting, cluttered backgrounds and distracting clothing. When I asked Pete what bagpipers would find most interesting in an image of another piper playing he used the example of his unconventional fingering and what he called his "mainland European style of holding the bag".

We also talked about the process of 'composing in our heads', myself with the pre-visualisation of a photograph and Pete with his concept of imagining musical ideas. Some interesting insights came when we then shared our thoughts on how we then go about making an image or a new tune.

I've been interested in photography for more than forty years and tonight, thanks to BBC Four, for the first time I've actually fallen in love with COLOUR photography. Although I had heard the name before, I had never seen the work of Saul Leiter. What's more, I really warmed to the man himself. Could this be a 'road to Damascus' moment? For those in the UK, if you missed this superb, relaxed documentary it's on BBC iPlayer for the next week.

Sandstone rock climbing - circa 1971

Graham Barnes [Cuileag] posted a photo:

In the 1960s / 1970s young rock climbers, based in SE England trained on the sandstone cliffs in and around the Tunbridge Wells region. The routes were rarely longer than 10m but were often overhanging and handholds smooth. The equipment we used was minimal. In this photograph I am using a very cheap polypropylene rope to avoid wear and tear on the expensive ropes used for 'serious' lead climbing. I am not wearing a modern harness for the same reason. The only conventional equipment being used here are the climbing shoes known as EBs after their manufacturer Ellis Brigham. www.mountainproject.com/images/2/12/106530212_large_69935...

I was an active rock climber for about ten years from ages 15 to 25 and this is the only action photograph of me that I am aware of. My brother Harry Barnes was not an enthusiastic rock climber but did join me on a few occasions on Cornish sea cliffs, Derbyshire limestone and in Snowdonia. I am very grateful that Harry made this photograph of me on colour slide film and recently scanned it for me to use. I converted the scanned image to monochrome and added some duotone.

Harry thinks that he made the photograph with his Carl Zeiss Werra 35mm film camera that he says "I always carried". camarasclassicas.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/werra-design-that...

Harry has dated this as circa 1971 because he remembers driving there in the first car that he owned. I dated it as circa 1968 because I thought I had a beard and shoulder-length hair in the early 1970s ... but my memory is shot so Harry wins.

It's 21st March and we should be seeing hints of Spring. However due to bad weather the native plants seem to be some weeks behind in their development. So I created some multi-coloured snowdrops in Photoshop for all those Iranians, Zoroastrians, Bahá'ís and others in Scotland who are celebrating Nowruz or Naw-Rúz.
Farm Sale - Nunraw Abbey (27 May 2011)

BACKGROUND Since the 1940s the Cistercian monks at Nunraw Abbey had, with the help of a small team, worked their lands themselves. Over the years the number of monks declined and those remaining have become elderly and the decision was taken to rent the farm land to a commercial company. This image was made on the day when their entire stock of implements was auctioned. The abbot, Father Mark, poses here with farm workers (L-R) Billy, Gerry and Dick.

RELIGIOUS ICONOGRAPHY The Documentary and Visual Journalism Group of the Royal Photographic Society has expressed an interest in journalistic images that can be used to illustrate some aspect of religious iconography.

Under the Rule of St. Benedict the scapular (seen here as a black apron fastened with a belt) is meant to symbolise the monastic idea that work has both a mundane and a spiritual value. Whether in the oratory or in the fields, a monk is always at work, and so a "scapular for work" is to be worn at all times. The Rule supports those who hold that it is meant to be worn even during the night rest. The Cistercians believe that St. Benedict meant the scapular to be worn not just as protective wear but for a symbolic reason. The wearing of the scapular therefore seems to signal that the Lord's workman is going about his master's work. Thus the apron, a tool associated with manual labour, has been transformed into a metaphor for the monastic purpose in life.
