Yesterday I ran/walked the Keswick-to-Barrow 40 mile challenge. It was my first attempt, and let's say the weather wasn't too kind with wind, rain & hailstorms, but I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the event. I managed to run the first 30 miles almost continuously, but had to slow down to a brisk walk for the last 10 miles. Still pleased with my time of 6hrs 57mins :)

Just home from a trip to the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. I first visited these hills 2 years ago and fell in love with them instantly. This is probably my favourite place outside of the Lake District in England. This is looking from Caerketton Craigs towards the city of Edinburgh.

Had an amazing meet with my long time Flickr friend from Florida Laura George on her Pennine Way adventure last night at Greenhead. That's me (left), Laura (centre) plus my dad (right). Was great to finally meet up and chat - I joined Flickr on an alternative account in 2007 when I was 18 years old, and became contacts with her almost straight away, and have been close ever since.

Don't ask me why, but Longlands Fell is probably my favourite 'Wainwright'. It's very featureless, unassuming and low in elevation - but all in all I think it's a lovely fell with great character and a grand sense of quietness. For a small hill, the views are very far reaching too, with glimpses of Lakeland yet a grand panorama of Scotland and the Solway right round to Carlisle and the Pennines. I struggled to find a rock or any foreground feature to compliment the view, but then I thought the patterns of snow amongst the grasses fitted in nicely with Longland's grassy charm and didn't distract from the vista.

Tonight's beautiful but painfully bitter sunset across Wast Water seen from Buckbarrow. Buckbarrow is one of my favourite hills - it has an amazing feeling of isolation and ruggedness yet offers spectacular views across a popular landscape - including England's 2 highest mountains!

This morning I intended to shoot a sunrise from the summit of Bowfell. I set off at roughly 5am from Great Langdale, and ascended Bowfell via The Band & Three Tarns. The sky was completely cloudless to begin with, but once I arrived at Three Tarns the mist swept in competely. Regardless, I carried on to the summit of Bowfell where I was greeted with thick fog. After waiting out for about 5 minutes, a sudden short gap in the mist appeared and I noticed that the nearby Esk Pike was cloudless. I decided to rush to Esk Pike with only 15 minutes until sunrise, and made it just to the top in time for the sun peeking over the horizon. I made the right decision as Bowfell remained in the mist for most of the morning.

A very unusual and unseen aspect of Skiddaw, with the setting sun over Great Cockup. Meal Fell is a wonderfully secretive vantage point with a fantastic prospect. Althought it is included in Wainwright's famous guidebooks, very little people know of Meal Fell.

Last light on Harter Fell, looking to the roof of England capped in clouds. A truly magical place. Look closely and you can see the remains of Hardknott fort in the valley.

Well having started off 2013 pretty disastrously with no photography in January at all and feeling a bit deflated & uninspired, the last week has definately boosted my spirits with 3 fantastic landscape photoshoots producing great yet different results. This is tonight's beautiful sunset looking to Skiddaw from Great Cockup. Excepting the name, Great Cockup is a beautiful little hill with wonderful views, especially towards Skiddaw from this non-tourist perspective. The impressive Dead Crags are well displayed, and the wonderful cascade of Whitewater Dash can just be made out at the head of the valley.

Dawn on Skiddaw, this morning.

I dedicate this image to my border terrier Meg, who sadly passed away last weekend after a lifetime on the hills as my walking companion, aged 13. Skiddaw was her first ever hill walk in 2002. It's quite poignant to know that she once put her pawprints on this path.....

After what seems like an eternity of drab weather over the festive season, I finally managed to grab some sunshine today in the Lake District, albeit the last 30 minutes of daylight or so. Walking up to Blake Fell from Burnbank Fell in the mist & rain, I suddenly noticed a hint of brightness through the grey, and by the time I reached the summit the mist had cleared. I love the view down to Cogra Moss, and the rising mists from the forests below the summit gave the scene some added atmosphere. It was a very difficult shot to execute, looking directly into the sun with the mist steaming up the filters, plus the excruciatingly bitter & strong wind.

This is High Force, not the famous one in the Pennines, but the one just upstream from Aira Force in the Lake District. Alot of people actually walk past this waterfall and don't realise it has a name, Aira Force being the main attraction. I think this picture really sums up this Christmas - wet.

The vertigo inducing view from Whin Rigg looking down to Wast Water. Only a few minutes before this shot was taken I was shrouded in thick mist. Subsequently getting this shot was quite a rush as the sun unexpectedly burst out from behind the thick clouds for only a few minutes before it set over the horizon. The light was spectacular, and although the colours look warm & inviting, it was actually freezing with an icy strong wind! At least it wasn't blowing me towards the edge.....

Another take on the view from Graystones looking towards Grisedale Pike, this time from further up the hillside. This incorporates less of the valley view, but I liked the curve of the drystone wall across the fellside, and how it disapperars over the edge.

Graystones is one of the lesser known Wainwright summits, yet it beholds one of my personal favourite views looking across Whinlatter Forest. It's a seldom seen angle of Grisedale Pike that's well worth the steep hike.
