Christina Amphlett Dead at 53

Rippie: Contra Censura! posted a photo:

This April, the fronting singer for the New Wave Garage Post-Punk band the DiVinyls, succumbed to her battle with MS and then Breast Cancer, for which she could not be treated.

This Australian band was raw, outrageous and brought their inner conflicts out on stage with them. The first time I saw them, Christina was trying to brain the lead guitarist, who was either her boyfriend (at that time) or her husband later and up until her death.

All troublemakers who met in a finishing school, from which Christina had been tossed for, mostly, being bored and acting out, she bummed around Europe starting at 16 but came back to rise to great acclaim as the sultry and pouting front for the DiVinyls.

Early on, at different shows, I saw her wearing a teddie like in this picture, a schoolgirl uniform that was too small, a Brownie uniform, too small, a dress appropriate for a 7 year old, a nurse's uniform, a sailor's uniform (blues), tight leathers and more.

I loved them and saw them many times. Like Bjork, there was just something a bit untamed and dangerous, and something sexy and sultry about her, and she could sing!

Always over the top, with that great intentionally sloppy sound that few bands pull off well (the Stones, Shonen Knife).

They were punky, new-wavy, trashy, foul-mouthed and fought on stage. She even took a swing at her husband with the mic stand and then threw it at him. He ducked and survived, and so did the show.

In an interview for Oz ABC that I saw years ago, she was asked about whether they were as trashy as they seemed and she laughed and said they were spoiled upper middle class kids who dropped out of prep school... all in a rather posh accent. Apparently, the joke was on all of us.

She died in the home she shared with husband Charley Drayton, the guitarist of the band with whom she fought, in New York.

She had been gigging, much for charity, right up until last Fall, a trouper til just about the very end.

RIP Chrissy...

Movie Magician Ray Harryhausen, a name known to Science Fiction and Fantasy/Monster Movie fans around the world, has died. He was 92.

He was the hands and the genius behind so many great movie moments, it's impossible to even think of a list without leaving out someone's favorites. Decades of monsters, scalliwags and ground-breaking special effects that had people jumping out of their seats... and their skins!

I'm SO glad I got to meet him many years ago and thank him personally then for all the memories and for really piquing my interest in film special effects, animation and opticals... and he set the bar high every time he developed a new technique for those who tried to copy him.

RIP Ray... you were an amazing visual miracle worker! Thank you so much for so much!
Bomber Nightmare Over!

Rippie: Contra Censura! posted a photo:

RIGHT NOW - One of the Boston Marathon Bombers was killed overnight in the early AM hours in a massive high-powered shootout after killing an MIT University Cop in a hail of bullets, as the cop was in his cruiser. Then, leading cops on a chase into neighboring Watertown, while tossing grenades from the vehicle at cops, the older brother was mortally shot in a movie-shootout style gunfight, dying in hospital shortly thereafter.

His 19 yo brother stole another vehicle after fleeing the stolen Mercedes they were in, driving over his brother's body to flee the scene and is believed to be cornered in a 20 square block area of Watertown at this moment, where the second stolen vehicle was found.

Police were alerted to his presence by a person who noticed blood in her apartment building's entry stairwell after the shootout, indicating that this younger brother is apparently injured.

CT State Troopers state that they MIGHT be in a Honda CRV, GRAY, with MA Tags 316-ES9, the recent white style with blue/red lettering.

The older brother was found to be wearing an apparently Chechen style SUICIDE VEST, and so the younger should be considered EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND NOT APPROACHED IF SEEN, assumed to be similarly kitted out!

This situation has been evolving since late last night and is very fluid as the entire Boston "T" system is locked down, streets have been cleared in many cities and towns, and police from every community within 40 miles have converged on the area.

There are assumed to be numerous unexploded remote bombs in place which the police are also searching in door to door manner.

It is estimated that at least 100 rifle and high power handgun rounds were involved in the gunfight overnight, as 92 casings have already been found and tagged at that scene, near the Watertown and Arsenal Shopping Malls on a residential street (I know that neighborhood very well).

The remaining bomber is assumed to be alive and on the run at this moment and VERY heavily armed with guns, grenades, bombs and a suicide vest (the reason that all public transit is shut down).

The cities/towns of Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, Brookline, Belmont, Newton, Wellesley and districts of Allston and Brighton are under NO EXIT rule now: nobody is allowed out of doors, and adjacent town Brookline (my location) is not declared, but is under lockdown with cops every half block on the major drags, as I have seen myself.

Obviously, this is far from over...

UPDATE: The apartment of the girlfriend/wife/female pal of the older brother, who apparently lived there and the younger brother stayed there occasionally, has been seized, and the neighborhood, a few block from where I used to live in the MIT area, has been evacuated as the police say they are collecting unexploded bombs, and one device has already been detonated.

The woman and her little child who live there were taken into custody. The area affected is the restaurant district of Cambridge Street around Elm Street, near Inman Square.

Also, the GRAY HONDA HAS JUST BEEN LOCATED IN BOSTON with nobody in it moments ago. Police are converging on that scene, too.

Unfortunately, now that I've seen very good photos of these two bombers, I can recall having seen the older brother in the area while I lived there, but cannot recall ever seeing the younger one, who is currently still at large.

I used to walk up there to have nice lunches or dinners at the various ethnic restaurants in that neighborhood, a few blocks from where I lived closer to MIT.

There is a video on YouTube, hard to see, since it's pitch black, but the audio is chilling, in which you can hear the gunfight in Watertown last night. It is good quality HD for a cellphone video.

I do NOT know the URL, but it is probably the #1 video on the site at the moment.

FURTHER: Because the younger brother is registered as a student at UMass Dartmouth, that entire campus is being evacuated in order to search for devices (IEDs) after the school was locked down by Administration.

Unbelievable... these two motherfuckers have shut down the entire MBTA: all buses, subways, trolleys and commuter rail lines are STOPPED throughout the State. Crime scenes exist in Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, Dartmouth and counting.

You couldn't write this as a movie, and it's really happening... two kids...

After checking the Brookline PD website, Brookline IS on lockdown, in addition to the other towns or cities cited.

AMTRAK Rail Service has been halted, and trains evacuated in the entire New England area, and Canadian RCMP have tightened their borders significantly, as they have moved to very heightened alert for this younger and apparently injured younger brother.

The Boston/West Metro region is a no-fly zone, and with heightened security, assume that air traffic will be affected throughout the region as flights are going to be greatly delayed.

Taxicab service, which had also been suspended early this morning has now been restored, presumably because they all have multiple safety features and two devices to alert authorities in an emergency.

-

Almost 4PM Update: THE ENTIRE AREA around Boston and Watertown is still on total lockdown: no businesses, stores, public transit, schools, nothing. People are still expected to stay in their homes and WAIT for the all-clear, which may take many more hours, even days, as untold THOUSANDS of Police at every level from local University cops to FBI, ATF, US MARSHALS and Army National Guard Military Police. There is no way to ever guesstimate the number of Police, Agents, Troopers or Marshals present on the many crime scenes/situation scenes.

It's cloudy, darkening a bit and the air is feeling humid and heavy, setting the tone for an ominous evening to come...

6PM UPDATE: The evening update from the State, the City of Boston and the Police and FBI is upcoming, but the advanced word a few moments ago in back channels is that there is no substantive change in the situation to report, and so the entire region is completely locked down with a Stay Home order and strict orders how to behave for the few who are walking or driving around.

It is silent in the city (I live on the Marathon Route) except for the occasional siren, even more than it was after 9-11. Very eerie.

-

UPDATE 6:08PM: The Stay Indoors/Stay Home Order is now lifted and the T (public transit) is now authorized to run and carry passenger. I have seen two trolleys head into Boston to reposition for those who need to finally get out, and one outbound now, but with only a handful of passengers.

EXCEPTION FOR WATERTOWN: There will be a MASSIVE POLICE PRESENCE with aggressive searching throughout the night, and people are advised to be out and about only if absolutely necessary. At present, only about 2/3 of the homes and businesses in the Watertown area have been searched, so residents should expect further inconvenience and intrusions.

NBC NEWS reports that the minute long gunfight last night involved about 200 rounds fired from various weapons by both Law Enforcement and the boys.

-

UPDATE 7PM: There was just a brief firefight in in Watertown in the park at Franklin Street, and an ambulance has been moved into the scene, all cops have their weapons drawn and at the ready.

Live cameras are on the scene, hard to tell what's going on yet.

-

UPDATE 8PM: THE SECOND GUNMAN IS SHOT AND SURROUNDED IN WATERTOWN. He is bleeding out but has explosives with him. Cops are trying to figure out what to do with him to keep him alive and not blow up whatever is present for devises. He was found hiding in a boat on a trailer in a back yard.

Bomber Nightmare Over!

AT THIS MOMENT the Federal Courthouse in South Boston is being evacuated, has been surrounded by FBI, Coast Guard gunboats, MA State Police Gunboats and more, as everyone has been moved to a safe distance in the last half hour due to what appears to be a phoned-in bomb threat.

This is a developing story, there is no direct connection to the Marathon Bombing yet, though rumors are flying that a suspect is either in custody or actually arrested, and then this incident occurred.

One theory is that this has to do with the prosecution and subsequent suicide of Aaron Swartz, founder of popular website Reddit, and that this may an Anon-action.
TWO or MORE BOMBS AT END OF BOSTON MARATHON!!

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE IN THE RACE OR IN BOSTON:
There is NO CELL SERVICE IN BOSTON RIGHT NOW in order to prevent accidentally setting of any more devices, since two more bombs have been found already. DO NOT COME TO BOSTON IF YOU ARE IN NEIGHBORING CITIES OR TOWNS! The Mass Av bridge is closed and the Back Bay is largely closed off.

To locate people, please call this Mayor's Hotline Number: 617-635-4500, set up specifically for this purpose to let people here check in and for others to find out that they have done. If you do come down, you will likely be arrested at this point. Cops and Troopers are not fooling around.

-

AT LEAST TWO BOMBS JUST WENT OFF AT THE END OF THE BOSTON MARATHON!!!
DOZENS of people have been injured, including people with limbs torn from their bodies after two massive explosions at the Finish Line of the Boston Marathon. Several fatalities are expected due to the nature of the injuries.

There may be as many as hundreds of people injured as people were blown over, grandstands were blown over, schrapnel and body parts were flying about. There is a great deal of blood at both sites, two blocks apart as nearly every ambulance and police officer in the region has been rushing into the scene (I’m on the race route a mile from the Finish).

A large portion of the city has been cordoned off, including all public transit in order to make sure people can be transported to hospitals as quickly as possible.

Most of the victims are viewers of the race, though some of the runners were injured, too. This happened at about 3pm Eastern and it has taken this long to get a clear connection on wireless to post this as the EMS have locked down most wireless services in the surrounding areas.

Updated 4/16AM: I have removed all the minute by minute updates. They are unneeded now.

Current casualty numbers per the Chief of the Boston Police Department:
Deaths - 3
Injured - 173
Amputations - 14 (based on comments by hospitals)

17 victims are considered to be in critical touch-and-go condition and many patients have been medically induced into comas to bridge them over the worst of their pain. There are severe burn victims, which is to be expected with bombs.

Everything else people want to know is easily found all over the web or on any TV station in the world right now.

No One Expects the Spanish Mustachio Gang!

Even a goldfish cannot escape the dreaded Spanish Mustachio Gang! This is an advert for a well regarded photography school here in Boston that attracts students from all over North America on a side wall of a street trolley (the Green Line). Light was coming from three directions and the cardstock was semigloss coated, so it was very difficult to shoot this with my pocket camera and deal with the woman sitting under it. The loop of her tam is still visible in the shot, and this is uncropped, composed and framed on a moving trolley by hand. Of the dozen or so shots I took, this had the best overall composition and readability.

Anyway, I just thought it was pretty hilarious that someone had given the poor unsuspecting goldfish in the bowl a mustachio. Amazingly, nobody has stolen this micro-masterpiece of meme art in real life.

Reduced 75% from the original 14Mb image with just a bit of contrast goosing to make it read better. Processed and reduced using the Picasa PC software engine, not the web engine.

Just shows to go ya, can't trust a groundhog! This was the overnight snow here in Boston on the last day of Winter, taken a few minutes after 6AM as day was breaking. Within the hour, the winds picked up and it switched over to rain and everything got slushy and gross, just in time for the entire morning commute, oh joy!

Survey says? There may be another snow event next week. Delightful.

Hey, so it's Pi Day! The date is 3/14, which is kinda like 3.1415927, which is as long as I've bothered to memorize, since it's finer resolution than a slipstick can use.

Oh, and today was some guy's birthday who was some kinda big shot in mathematics, too.

Guitarist, songwriter, social commentarian... Alvin Lee, one of the greatest guitarists of the second half of the 20th C, and one of the ten best of the 60s and 70s has died on March 7, 2013, aged 68. He was the frontman of the prolific and influential honkytonk blues rock band Ten Years After, a voice of political and social awareness nearly 50 years ago, and the writer of the pivotal anthem I'd Love to Change the World, song (in very good sound) with lyrics presented here: youtu.be/b24m6mCBn0E in a montage that is all period from their era.

Listen to the lyrics of this song and you'll see that nothing has changed in fifty fucking years since he wrote it... at least not here in the USA.

The world needs more Alvin Lee... but instead, now we have less... and we are the poorer for it...

This is the sky the night when the Blizzard had cleared and move on. This really is the color of the sky. I worked hard to make sure this ended up looking like what I say, so all I did was play with the dynamic range of the image and bring up the saturation of the color a bit, since this was sunset and the light was pretty flat considering the exposure.

HANDHELD shot at 420mm at 1/30th sec at f3.7. I had to knock out these shots very quickly as the light was changing by the second.

Sometimes the most beautiful skies of all are for five minutes after massive storms have cleared out... every now and then.

For a winter sky, this is one of the most dramatic I've ever seen. And yes, the light was really lavender colored... it was really nice.

This is the sky the night when the Blizzard had cleared and move on. This really is the color of the sky. I worked hard to make sure this ended up looking like what I saw, so all I did was play with the dynamic range of the image and bring up the saturation of the color a bit, since this was sunset and the light was pretty flat considering the exposure.

Happy Lunar New Year from Hello Kitty in Space!

This is a real picture of a real adventure by the world's favorite cat, who held her breath and returned safe and sound from the edge of space.

Read about this adventure here: yhoo.it/W7jWPa to view the Yahoo! article and a short video. There is a link to a longer video showing the building and preparation of the Mission, a project of a 7th grade girl, Lauren Rojas, in Antioch, CA. Including multiple cameras and the 1950s sci-fi rocketship for our intrepid Kitty, this was done for only about $500 using materials you can buy in the store or online.

Science and Cuteness for a Cause, as you can see from the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon on the "rocket's" meowselage below the viewport.

That is one lucky Kitty! If you haven't seen this on the news, you surely will in the areas affected by the monster blizzard winding down right now.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Unfortunately, this was it already melting away. Oh well. There will be none by tomorrow afternoon, but more is coming Friday late. So, two wimpy little snows this winter so far. Meh. This was the view from my window across the way, 420mm Leica handheld shot. I'll try to bother with the tripod next time, but this was just an "oh cool view" shot and then out the door deal, so, be nice about the not razor sharpness. Original image was 5mp. And yes, this is really a color shot. Still, it is a nice view!

Connecticut Child Massacre

[Rippie Image, NO RIGHTS RESERVED - PUBLIC DOMAIN - Use this anywhere you like] Yet another horrific abuse of the misinterpreted 2d Amendment "right" in the USA... and 20 beautiful little children are dead along with half a dozen adults.

The image says what I mean. Handguns cause murders, and the numbers and statistics bear it out. They embolden sick mother fuckers to murder: pissants who would not otherwise do so by another means and the numbers and statistics bear that out.

Not nutter numbers from the NRA, not nutter numbers from anti-gun loons... but raw, simple statistics from the last several decades compiled from crime tallies from all police departments and FBI.

At least 27 people are dead here today in Connecticut, just part of the about FIFTEEN THOUSAND MURDERED EVERY YEAR BY HANDGUNS IN THE USA, who would not otherwise be murdered if handguns were not available.

15,000 murders a year by handguns in the USA, for decades, and as many as nearly 25,000 per year in the peak years

That is HALF of the murders in the USA every year... by handguns... and the mass shootings? They don't happen in the big cities, they happen in nice, quiet, white, genteel suburbs and exurbs.

And today, some psycho slashed over 30 children in a school in China... not in the city. He was literally mentally ill.

There is something innately wrong with the human animal, and permitting the private civilian ownership of such deadly force as offered by handguns is sheer and utter stupidity: permission by idiots to idiots to be fucking murderers.

Enough already!

COMPLETELY UNEDITED TWEET BY RUPERT MURDOCH, OWNER OF FAUXNEWS/NEWSCRAP!!!

This is absolute proof that FauxNews are anything BUT "Fair and Balanced." This is a tweet sent by Evil Uncle Rupie to Mayor Bloomberg of NYC to thank him for canceling the NYC Marathon, which I agree is the right thing to do. HOWEVER, he goes out of his way to chastise Chris Christie, the Governor of devastated New Jersey for his effusive praise for President Obama and for FEMA several times over the last several days when he said that party politics is the LAST thing on his mind and he no longer has any interest or concern for the election.

This is Murdoch's way of what... showing who's really boss?

What a flaming fucking asshole.

Frankly, that nasty Aussie mummified bugger can go fuck himself for trying to interfere openly with the election here in the USA.

WE should do what Canada have done and disallow Faux News from having any licenses to broadcast here in this country, too.

I'd LOVE to hear what criminal activities hacks of HIS voicemail would reveal!

This comes mighty close to feeling like Election Tampering by a Foreign Agent!!!

Proof that FauxNews is full of Shit from the Top Down

This comes mighty close to feeling like Election Tampering by a Foreign Agent!!!

this is the very ribbon and flag i wore on Sept. 11, 2001... i saw the world's tallest buildings erected as a child, a wonder, before my eyes. then i saw them crash to the ground in seconds, killing nearly 3,000 people, and changing the world forever.

on the 11th, no pics, no comments, no flickr, no thoughts but for the innocents who perished at the hands of deluded, insane idiots who will suffer in eternity, for martyrdom shall never be theirs.

please remember the people in the 4 planes and 3 buildings, their families, and the brave police and fire personnel who died saving others...

it was america's saddest day, and it was truly her greatest day...

Today is the Eleventh Anniversary of the attack of cowards who think that mere buildings can destroy a nation and an idea. They are still wrong.
