This is a small but puzzling photograph that shows five men--three of them with helmets and uniforms--and two rockets or missiles. A large audience of school-age children has gathered on what looks like a playground or sports field. Farmland is visible in the distance. The bumpy texture on the surface of the original photo (below) produces an enlargement that's somewhat fuzzy, but take a look at a close-up of the rockets and men (above).

The back of the photo provides three pieces of information. The first is a date--"5 May 64"--in the 1960s, which, of course, was a time when the Space Race between the United States and Soviet Union was starting to heat up. The second is an "Original Minox" stamp, which suggests some connection to the Minox subminiature camera that was used as a spy camera during World War II and into the 1980s. And, finally, a "Mimosa Kiel" stamp may indicate that the photo was printed on photographic paper manufactured in what was then West Germany.

So is this an intriguing Cold War-era photo of rockets or missiles taken with a spy camera and developed using West German photo paper? Or is it just a mundane snapshot of wannabe astronauts showing off their model rockets to schoolkids?

A cardboard picture disc. Whoever cut it out didn't follow the circle precisely. Even though the disc is a bit misshapen, it looks like it might still play. I'm not sure what television show the L&M T.V. Quartet appeared on, but they look like an enthusiastic group of fellows.

Free Pass to the Buddy Deane Hop

Winston "Buddy" Deane was the host of the Buddy Deane Show, which was a popular teen dance show that aired in Baltimore from 1957 to 1964. If you're familiar with the John Waters film (and later musical) Hairspray, then you may know that the Buddy Deane Show was the basis for the film's Corny Collins Show.

Deane was also the disc jockey at record hops in Maryland and Pennsylvania during the late 1950s and early 1960s. These were advertised as a "Buddy Deane Hop" or the "Hop of the Year," and they were often sponsored by school and community groups as fundraising events. In the years following the release of the original Hairspray movie (1988), Deane deejayed again, this time for middle-aged fans at record hops in Baltimore. Buddy Deane passed away in 2003 at the age of seventy-eight.

This is the front panel of a folded product tag that was originally attached to a shoe polisher purchased in 1965 ("7-65" is penciled in on the back). Inside are brief descriptions of the different models--The Aristocrat, The Diplomat, and The Executive--and a service guarantee.

The inside text begins with the statement, "This Dremel Electric Shoe Polisher is a man-pleasing gift the whole family can use--and enjoy."

Glen Rock is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania. I haven't been able to uncover any information regarding a pop concert (or was it a "rock pop concert"?) held there in 1969, but it's interesting to note that the infamous Woodstock music festival in New York state took place a week later, from August 15 to August 18, 1969.

Bird Watching Society membership card issued to fans of popular radio personality Ron Drake (a "drake" is also a bird, get it?), who was active on the air in Harrisburg, Pa., from the 1960s until his retirement in 1982. Sadly, Drake passed away in 2005.
