Named as Razorbills are their beak is meant to resemble a cut throat razor, I'm slightly dubious but then I don't use these particular type lol!

Highlight of 2011? Canada? Maybe Killarney for three weeks, that was magical too... Nah! It's gotta be the Puffins!!!!!! Bald Eagles are cool but you can't beat a puffin lol! I seen lots of Guillys and Razors that day that I've still to post, arhh! Did I ever complain about nothing to post? Shame on me!

Aisling's profound thought of the day " Isn't Flickr the best diary ever? I looked through my posts today and remembered alot of 2011 I had forgotten, I had diaries in the past but never got past January!"

This video/sideshow comes with the following warning: People may either love/hate/be sacred to death/have nightmare/alternatively amazing dreams about Gannets after viewing....

These are some of my faves and hi-lights to look out for:

1) A Gannet getting a massive ring on his leg that has a cool GPS that will transmit for three years, wow!!
2) Their amazing binocular vision, they can also dislocate their wings on purpose to dive like a bullet into the water, their brain is also cushioned to absorb impact, amazing guys, I wish I got a diving shot :(
3) John Doyle in his green t-shirt in the midst of them, we followed him into then to the midst of them as soon as we now knew it was safe to do so!
4) Black baby chick very cute, big white fluffy chick really ugly (in my opinion!!) unlike puppies and kittens the adults are much better looking!!!
5) A chick being fed seafood chowder, yum!
6) Necking and beaking (kinky.... ;))
7) One Gannet giving another a big hug
8) A Gannet getting hooked for ringing, expression on the bird priceless!!!

The smell and noise of this place is unforgettable, I'd say I ponged of bird shite for the next week! Unlike the puffin who seem to be mute these guys just won't SHUT UP!!!! Not sure how they get to sleep! Plus considering they're so so soooooo elegant in the sky my god they can't land at all!!! Every so often you'd hear a loud THUMP! Total disaster when it came to landing! :))))

Of note, my friend Dave had a Sigma 150-500mm lens and he let me use his 70-200mm Canon as my 300mm doesn't have IS (neither here nor there) however at the end when in the absolute middle of these guys he was TOO close!!!! Hilarious! I had to give him back the 70mm which was still about close, I popped on my 50mm macro as it was the closest thing I had to hand (hindsight says maybe the wideangle) so many of these shots e.g. Gannet with really young black baby chick, were uncropped, I was literally arms reach away, mind blowing stuff (to me anyway!!).

Whoohoo!!!! Finally after two failed attempts last year I got to see puffins, and loads of them too!! What a cracking day, one the BEST EVER!!!!! Thanks to Dave (who is joining flickr shortly so you all have to be nice to him and add him) and John for the great company! I would have been abit wary to go right into a Gannet colony but John wasn't so we all followed and survived, god they're placid but could take ya out if they wanted! I took around 900 shots so still sorting :( but I pulled out my Puffin faves and decided to cheat by sticking them together in a slide show.. and seeing as it was sooo hot and sunny and amazing ( I did mention how amazing it was didn't I?!) I figured this was the soundtrack to go with it... Bill Withers, Lovely day....

P.S. loads of Gannet, Razorbills and Guillimot shots to follow at some stage when I have some decent wireless, this took all night to upload! :(
