The honk bands scheduled to play at the "stage" on Palmer Street (called "Palmer Alley" on this sign and "Palmer Street Alley" on the honk website) in Harvard Square. (The last band on the list, Pink Puffers, would play on the Main Stage, not here.)

A City Is More than Its Red-Light District

The descriptions in Verizon's program guide are always inane, but this one is inaner than most: "The Layover -- Anthony realizes there is more to a city than just the red-light district."

Anthony is Anthony Bourdain and The Layover is his excellent travel-cum-foodie series on the Travel Channel. In this episode he has a 36-hour "layover" in -- oh! did Verizon forget to mention it? -- Amsterdam. He's at his sardonic best in it -- assuming of course that a cool 55-year-old guy wandering stoned and/or looped through half the show could even approach his best. No red-light district, though. He mentions it and recalls a visit there about 1970, but one place where he does hang out is a coffee shop called the DampKring, where he "notices" the aroma of pot. (You don't think Verizon's gonna mention that, do you?)

Check out Bourdain's long-running series No Reservations, too. Here's his show about Boston, the town I spend so many pixels on, though mostly he does "Southie" (South Boston), a part of town where I'm just the occasional visitor.

You can catch buses as well as subways in Harvard Square. These are the schedules for the various bus lines there.

Trans Europ Express (TEE) Trains and Us

This timetable, dated Summer 1974, was issued by the French National Railroads (SNCF). The names of cities are generally shown as an English-speaker would know them (e.g., The Hague) but sometimes not (e.g., Bruxelles). Pages of the timetable not shown here list another 25 TEE trains.

In 1973 we took the TEE Ile de France from Paris to Amsterdam (see under Paris - Bruxelles - Amsterdam). About half the people on board got off in Brussels.

In 1973 we took the TEE Rheingold from Amsterdam to Bern (not shown on this page of the timetable).

In 1975 we took the TEE Mistral from Dijon to Nice (see under Paris - Lyon - Marseille - Nice).

In 1975 we took the TEE Cisalpin from Milan to Lausanne (see under Paris - Lausanne - Milan).
