The Grande Caribe departed New Orleans today in heavy rain. This tug, the Morgan Ray, was a bright spot on the river before we made our way to the industrial canal. We will be in Mobile by morning.

02MAY13: blue light

Our first morning aboard the Grande Caribe I set the standard I missed only a couple of times in over two weeks: getting up at 4:45. Without exception the early part of the day was serene and rewarding. Pictured here from the boat's upper deck is the Crescent City Connection in New Orleans, which carries US90 across the Mississippi River.

01MAY13: five

We boarded the Grande Caribe in the Port of New Orleans on May 1st and disembarked on May 17th. Cell service and internet in the interim was iffy at best, so I am way behind in posting an image a day. The catch up process has begun.

The dining room windows while we were in port were slightly below the level of the dock. Lovely wildflowers sprang up anywhere they could find a bit of soil. A sweet welcome to be sure.

We crossed Lake Pontchantrain on I-10 today, an experience I've not had in nearly 30 years. Having heard about the levee since Katrina in 2005, nothing would do until I walked up on it myself. This is the pumping station at Hayne Boulevard and Jahncke Road in East New Orleans. To the casual observer's eye it's not a thing of beauty, but for the folks who live below the lake it means life.

To guard this angel's privacy I won't identify her. Suffice it to say Tal and I had a delicious dinner and an entertaining evening with her, her brother and her parents this evening at Felix's Fish Camp Grill in Mobile AL. Blue and yellow suits her, don't you think?

We're spending the night in Valley AL enroute to New Orleans. A display of apples in a three-tiered stand grace a console in the lobby of the hotel. Pretty as a picture.

I was up early on this last day of the 2013 Kanuga Photography Retreat. Although I had trouble exposing the scene given the lightening sky and the dark trees between me and the lake, I like the feel of this view. It's been a great week.

To reinforce three+ days of conversation about light and reading light, our class ended this afternoon with a stark demonstration of Rembrant, back, side and rim lighting. We were able to practice instructing the model to move -- which way, how far -- and to watch the effect that movement had on how the face was lit. Here one of my classmates sits with our instructor, Jon Kral, holding the light.

I went into Hendersonville to make an environmental portait for the class I'm in at Kanuga this week. While visiting one particularily interesting store (the owner of which allowed me to make her photograph -- yay), I encountered this zebra in the book section. It's fashioned out of French language newspaper.

I arrived at Kanuga today mid-morning, registration for the photography retreat scheduled to begin at 4:00. The afternoon was warm enough that I had my door open for a little while, providing me both pleasant breezes and some distinct shadows.

The floor of the woods around the house is suddenly, wonderfully green. One of the prettiest parts of it all is the bracken -- long, languid, unrolling, delicate.

Tal, Belle and I had a picnic lunch and hung out today while the house was being shown. As we walked the trestle on the Governor's Rail Trail the wisteria climbing up the guywire and onto the power lines caught my eye. I waited along time for a vehicle to come along the road and then I didn't quite catch it before it started behind the pole.

Our house is going to be shown tomorrow, so Tal spent today getting the yard ready. Yes, I was busy doing the same inside.

My favorite aspect of Tal's finished product is the edging along the sidewalks and the driveway, all sharply defined, the grass clippings swept or blown away. Then there's the dappled sunlight of the late afternoon ... and the red, green, purple. I'm contented here at the end of the day.

I don't know what the purple groundcover is. We brought it in two small pots at a local school's silent auction seven years ago. It survives cold and drought, coming back year after year. A very good buy!

Tal located this lovely wild shrub in the woods. We have had no luck in the past transplanting such treasures into our yard, so it will stay where it is. There's nothing keeping me from visiting now is there?
