I was standing there waiting for my friend Hitomi. As I was a bit too early, I grabbed my camera out of the bag, looked through the viewfinder and watched out if there was something that might catch my eye. A practise that I had never followed up before.
I looked through the viewfinder and he looked at me, I pressed the shutter release, he still looked at me and smiled, I pressed the shutter release again. We smiled at each other and then he asked me where I am from.
You have to know, my japanese language skills are very limited at the moment, and his English was not better than my Japanese, but we started a conversation. While he desperately searched for the right words, I kept taking some photos of him. Of course I asked him for permission.
I understood that he was from Fukushima, now he lived in Tokyo & worked as a musician. At one point we got stuck. I said, 'don't worry, Hitomi will be here soon, she speaks fluently Japanese'.
But, he decided to start drawing, and I got really impressed.
In the meanwhile Hitomi arrived. I quickly explained her the situation and she started to provide information about the missing gaps. Part of the story goes like this: Actually he was heading to catch his train, but then he saw me and started a conversation and decided to catch a later train.
To make a long story short, this was one of my encounters in Tokyo that made me think again and again, that creativity coupled with sympathy is one of the keys that help to overcome language barriers, that brings you close to people even if you don't speak the same language.
As some of you already know, photography became my profession, which fills me with pure happiness, what I was not so aware of is that art in general builds bridges that enable individuals to come together, to become friends, lovers, even if they don't share the same spoken language.
