The beauty of Alaska grabs you and never lets you go. Some people come and stay for awhile, and then go back to the lower 48 states, but Alaska will always remain in their hearts. Perhaps scenes like this are one of the reasons why.

Avalanche!

As my husband and I wove our way through Keystone Canyon on the way to Valdez, we saw a lot of avalanches that had crossed the highway, and had been cleared away by the highway department. Some of them, (as the one you see in this photo) - only made it to the edge of the road - however it is only the beginning of avalanche season in Alaska. One must be ever vigilant for rock slides, as well as avalanches, when traveling or recreating in mountainous areas in the spring.

I enjoy the trip to town rather than the actual arrival. With scenery like this, can you blame me?
This shot is SOOC. There was no need to enhance the beautiful scenery in this image.

The Glenn Highway has many different faces. In some areas it is an actual "highway" such as you see in this photo, in other places it looks like a cow path. It seems that every summer another section is torn up and improved - but due to the extreme temperatures and weather conditions during the winter months - the job never ends. Pot holes and frost heaves are common and Alaskans have learned to be vigilant when driving - it is the unaware tourist that gets into trouble and sometimes loses their vehicles to the unforgiving "highways." Of course the beautiful scenery may be a factor in the mishaps too, as visitors from other lands find themselves gazing at the mountains and wildlife, instead of keeping their eyes on the road surface. This year eleven miles of the Glenn will be under construction from mile 182 to Tolsona Creek - at the creek the bridge will be replaced as well. It looks like we will have to be very patient when heading to town this summer. I'll be sure to have a good book and a few snacks for any long delays. :))

I'll start out by saying this is a summer shot - it is not what I see out of my windows today. What I do see is snow, and a temperature of an astounding 30 degrees above zero! How ever, the weather geniuses are predicting a low of minus 26 F. by mid-week. That is a more normal temperature for this time of year.
I took this shot along the Richardson Highway late last summer. The drive to Valdez is one of the most beautiful in Alaska, and this is typical of what you will see along the way.
About this time of year Alaskans are longing to see "green" - so I thought I'd cheer them up by posting this image.

Eagle Pilot Car?

Driving along the "Glenn Highway" - this eagle decided to be our "Pilot Car" (or guide). I post this image just for the humorous aspect of the shot - not because it is good photography.
As you can see - in Alaska the term "highway" is loosely used. By lower 48 standards, this would be a lousy back road in need of repair. *LOL
Just thought some of my Flickr contacts might get a kick out of this image. *(Best on black - or totally ignored. Hahaha)

2013 Alaska construction season has begun!

On Monday we decided to make the trip into Palmer/Wasilla for a little shopping. Imagine our surprise when we topped a hill and looked down upon road construction crews, flaggers, pilot cars, and heavy equipment moving dirt! On February 25th! Woo-hoo - a sure sign of an early spring. We didn't even mind sitting in line and waiting to follow the pilot car. In this shot we were returning home. Notice the sprint musher ahead of us. He was from Bozeman, Montana, and had just participated in the Fur Rondy sprint races, and was heading back home.
**( The construction area is located a few miles east of Chickaloon on the Glenn Highway)

I love seeing good old Lynden Transport trucks running over Alaska's tiny road system. They are bringing much needed goods from the lower 48, to the north country. Team drivers, with double containers, drive up and down the Alcan Highway a couple of times each week, and have been serving Alaska since 1954.
I tip my hat to these rugged individuals, and their dedication to the far north.

As some of you know I received a Carl Zeiss lens for my birthday last month. I took it with me on a trip into Glennallen to see how it would do driving down the highway at 50 miles and hour, and shooting straight through the windshield. It looks like it will be okay should a moose or caribou happen to wander into road ahead of us. This lens has passed all of the tests I have put it through so far. (At least in my old eyes.) *LOL (This image SOOC)

I took this beautiful shot in Haines Junction in Yukon Territory. (One of my favorite places outside of Alaska.) In the background you see the Kluane Mountains. In three short months this is what it will look like - I think I must make plans to visit there again. *LOL *(Best on black)

I took this shot near along the Glenn Highway in the Sheep Mountain area almost a month ago. The Chugach Mountain Range is to the left, and the Talkeetna Mountains to the right. Since I shot this, we have not had any measurable snow fall, so the Sheep Mountain 150 Sled-dog Race (scheduled for this coming weekend) just had to be cancelled. Since it is one of the qualifier's for rookies that intend to run the Iditarod - it is making things tough for them to get in their miles. There is talk that the race may be rescheduled for sometime in the spring, after the Iditarod. Guess we'll have to see what Mother Nature says about that. Maybe it's time to have my husband do another "snow dance". When he did so last year - record snowfall hit our state, burying everything in sight. *LOL ** (Best on black)

Hoar Frost . . .

Our temperatures are well below zero both day and night now, and hoar frost clings to anything that is exposed to the chilly temperatures. Spruce trees, power lines, the exterior of buildings, and even the roads surface, will have a continual build up of frost as the deep freeze continues. The landscape is extraordinarily beautiful when locked tight in winters grip. I especially like the flocked trees that you see in this image.
There is an old song about Alaska that has a line in it that I can relate to - it says: "when it's spring time in Alaska it's forty below". *LOL (Best on black - and yes I did stand in the middle of the road for this one.)

Frosty Alaskan Landscape

Our weather is still clear and cold - but the roads are dry, and it is the perfect time to go for a ride. In this image you can see the frost spread across the Alaskan landscape. The sun still has some warmth in it, and by mid-afternoon the south side of the trees have lost the frost, while the north side is still frozen. It makes for some interesting photos.

I took this shot two days ago, as we returned home from a shopping trip to Anchorage. It is a fairly good stretch of the Glenn Highway, as it crosses over the Nelchina River. When I cross over it next month - the leaves will be on the ground, and hunting season will be over. Maybe I will see moose and caribou on the move again. This was a hand held, through the windshield shot. If I had tried to get out and take a middle of the road shot here - I would have been run over by the many hunters breaking the speed limit on their way to their favorite hunting sites. Mid-week in autumn, there are very few cars on the back-roads of Alaska. That means that I can literally stand in the middle of the road and capture scenes such as the one in this image. My husband is usually somewhere behind me in the truck, keeping his eyes on the road - and me. You never know what kind of wildlife is standing behind the brush just a few feet from you - so it's nice to have a living guardian angel standing by with a weapon.

I took this shot through the windshield of our truck at nine thirty in the morning, as we were heading to the Copper Basin 330 Mile Dog Sled Race. The morning skies were over cast, and it was not quite daylight as two moose decided to step out and meander across the highway. A small car was just about to pass us at a pretty high rate of speed - but changed his mind when he saw my husband put on the emergency flashers as a warning to him. It is one of the dangers that drivers should be mindful of when driving at dawn or dusk during an Alaskan winter. (*Press L for best view SOOC)

Once the tourists have fled the north country - the Alaskan Highway, (or "Alcan" as it was called when we moved north 37 years ago) becomes a paradise for those who live and travel the road. Nothing can be heard except for the rustle of the aspen leaves in the gentle fall breezes, and the call of the geese as they migrate to warmer climates for the winter. I've stood and answered the call of the ravens, and had a long chat with an eagle as he came ever and ever closer to my silly mimicking of his call. Now that we are in the very depths of an Alaskan winter - it is hard to believe that this photo was taken on September 4th - just 4 short months ago. If only there were such a thing as a "Time Machine" - I would propel myself back to that perfect fall day. :)) **(Best on black)

As we traveled into Glennallen today to mail some Christmas packages, I noticed a plow coming toward us from quite a distance away. I couldn't miss the snow being kicked up by his blade - so my husband obliged me and stopped the truck so I could hop out and grab a few shots. I liked the way the sun lit up the snow in this shot - so here it is for those that like big Tonka trucks at work. :)) **(Best on full-screen to see the power in this image)

Our temperatures have been staying below zero for most of the day now. If we get to 5 above during the afternoon, it actually feels warm. I stood in the road to capture this mid-morning (10:00 AM) scene along the Glenn Highway. As you can see there is very little traffic during the winter months. There are times you travel for several miles without seeing another vehicle. Snowfall has been light so far this winter, and Alaskan's are hoping for at least a couple of feet to keep things from freezing up. During our lengthy cold spell, the aurora has been keeping shutter-bugs busy snapping the awesome nightly sight. I guess I should go out and grab a few shots of my own - but mellowed by the warmth of the wood-stove, and curled up with my latest novel - it is darned hard to convince myself that I need any more shots of the Northern-Lites.**(As always - best on black)

Most of the so called "highways" that lead to and from our cabin look just like the one in this image. Between frost heaves and earthquake damage - a trip over these roads can be quite exciting. Many an RV'er from the lower 48 and Europe, have been caught by surprise when cresting a hill at 55 MPH and coming upon pot-holes big enough to swallow cars, or loose gravel that can cause them to lose control of their super-sized vehicles. When the winter snows cover the roads surface - the highways actually become smoother. I though that some of my Flickr friends might get a kick out of what passes for a "highway" in Alaska.
