86 Eliot Street, "Prismatic Club," Brush Park, GONE!

Equinox27 posted a photo:

This is a house on the edge of Brush Park that I had never heard of. The black and white shot is from the collection of PlacePromo, www.placepromo.com/display.php?id=3129&built=&add... from 1976. I found the approximate location on Bing and noticed that it is similar in style to the one in that block that is still there. Then, I found this clipping about some of it's history, being left in Levi Barbour's will to the Prismatic Club for their use. Don't know if there is any more information out there about this place. It certainly was another of Brush Park's great houses!

PlacePromo lists the house's architect as Joseph E. Mills and the date of construction as 1895.

In the distance here is the Lucien Moore house, now reconstructed by HGTV.

This is one of the later houses built in Brush Park during it's heyday. It is definitely post Victorian but I know nothing of it's history. As far as I know it's still standing, at least it shows up on the satellite view. There are more preserved houses right next to it and across the street. This is in the northern part of the neighborhood at 304 Erskine Street. The commercial building in the distance with the yellow sign is the Gause's Party Store. Maybe they put the Beaubien Party Store down on Beaubien out of business!

I have earlier pictures of this house taken in 2001 which show a very plain side view and some holes in the roof.

This was taken on our first trip to Brush Park, Detroit in 2001. The house was soon torn down though I believe the building behind it is still standing. A picture of this house before it experienced full frontal collapse can be seen here:
www.detroityes.com/gild/05bp-roundhouse.htm

Notice the Dutch style gables, unusual touches on a fantastic house.

Then there's this:
www.detroitfunk.com/?p=3045

Originally the home of lumber magnate, Robert C. Faulconer on the corner of John R and Watson Streets. A quote from the Detroit Free Press in 1891 reports:

"It is an attractive house from the exterior but the feature which strikes one most conspicuously is the fact that proportions rather than details characterize the dwelling. It is exceeding spacious, having been built for room and comfort rather than outside beauty which is noticeable in many homes, the interior of which may be very inconveniently arranged.
Mr Falconer's house was designed by Hess and Raseman and was built about three years ago. (1888) It is what is known as the Elizabethan style of architecture, with large Dutch gables. It is red brick with brown stone trimmings and the bay windows and other exterior woodwork are painted black."

The Italianate to the left, 83 Alfred St is the Hodge-Ash house, the tall one in the middle is George Jerome House. The James V. Campbell residence in the middle is the only survivor from this picture. The house on the far right that is barely showing with the Mansard roof is next to the two surviving "Mansard twins" that are also presently mothballed.

This picture was stitched together from two views taken at the same time that are in the Burton Collection at the Detroit Library. The left side of the Hodge house was missing in the picture and was recreated using another old but unclear real estate photo from a newspaper clipping. I wanted to get as much of the original neighborhood in the shot as possible.
Campbell House at 261 Alfred Street" />

One of the survivors on Alfred Street in Brush Park, Detroit. This house was stripped of it's Italianate ornamentation long ago and almost was lost. Recently it was mothballed by the city to be restored at a later date.

Compare the detailing left under the eaves with what you can see in Marty's view and in the 1881 view. All that good stuff gone!

One puzzle I'm having a little trouble with is why the chimneys on my 2001 view show up in the back and on the others they are on the sides. Perhaps there were four chimneys that weren't visible from the front in some views and the ones on the side disappeared some time in the nineties?

291 Erskine Street, Brush Park, Detroit 2007

Equinox27 posted a photo:

These two houses are part of the Erskine Street section of Brush Park that is still fairly intact and are up for renovation. From the Bing satellite map below you can see them in the middle. The one on the left is a latecomer to the Brush Park neighborhood with it's Arts and Crafts style architecture. It is also so deteriorated (as can be seen from above) that one wonders if any kind of restoration is likely.

UPDATE: After a little research I find that the house on the left is less than a shell and the one on the right is no more. So much for dreams of renovation!
fadeddetroit.blogspot.com/2010/01/another-loss-291-erskin...

Just found this, the house to the right of the one on the right that is also gone:
291 Erskine Street, Brush Park, Detroit 2007

These two houses are part of the Erskine Street section of Brush Park that is still fairly intact and are up for renovation. From the Bing satellite map below you can see them in the middle. The one on the left is a latecomer to the Brush Park neighborhood with it's Arts and Crafts style architecture. It is also so deteriorated (as can be seen from above) that one wonders if any kind of restoration is likely.

UPDATE: After a little research I find that the house on the left is less than a shell and the one on the right is no more. So much for dreams of renovation!

Just found this, the house to the right of the one on the right that is also gone:

From the location and architecture, I imagine this was actually built as a storefront somewhere around the turn of the century. Though located on Beaubien Street in Detroit's Brush Park neighborhood, it was also unlikely constructed as the Beaubien Party Store! Someone (Creighton Realty) thinks that it has a future in the new Brush Park but, given the complete collapse of the roof, I doubt that it is going to happen. As comparison shots, nothing much has changed in the six years here except the appearance of a sheet of black plastic that must be all of which remains from the fence surrounding the place in the satellite view. Very useful, I am sure.

One of the most remarkable houses in Brush Park, Detroit. The Ransom Gillis house has quite a history and has been photographed many times in various states of decay. I never saw it until the signature tower had fallen off and I assumed it would soon be rubble. At the last minute it was rescued and sealed up to prevent further decay. Though not like it was when new, it at least will remain on the same location it has occupied for over a hundred years.

Equinox27 posted a photo:

The first time I went to Brush Park in 2001, this place was still standing across from the police station. The next visit it was gone. I have posted these buildings separately but had forgotten that they were next to each other till I saw a pic of them here taken in 2003:
www.flickr.com/photos/37640374@N04/3651818330/in/set-7215...
I then put them back together in photoshop.

During the early twentieth century storefronts were added to many of the old mansions in Brush Park as they were refashioned from palaces to everyday, functional buildings.

Here is a shot from smartee_martee:
www.flickr.com/photos/smartee_martee/264103575/in/set-721...

And this shows the back of the buildings in 2003 (from hoteldennis):
www.flickr.com/photos/37640374@N04/3651023303/in/set-7215...

And the Sanborn maps of these two plus the house that used to be beside this one on Alfred:
Georges MKT BASKET, Brush Park, Detroit

Equinox27 posted a photo:

Recently themaskedman55 posted a shot of the "Mansard Twins" that showed this familiar landmark store on the corner of Alfred and Brush Streets was gone.
www.flickr.com/photos/34700001@N06/6704242193/in/photostream

Old photos suggest this store, as well as the one across the street, were an active hub in the neighborhood. A photo taken in the Forties published in LIFE magazine shows signs that say "CUT RATE DRUG STORE."
