Just back from a day trip to Yosemite. It was not my best ever day to Yosemite, but hey I can't complain. It's Yosemite! This is Tuolumne Falls. I just did a day hike down to White Cascade and a bit further. This was the only decent photo I got because the sun was already up by the time I got down there. Nonetheless, it is an amazing place and a great hike.

KILLER BRUSH

This is Little Canyon Creek Falls in the Trinity Alps from last month.

I did not find any new waterfalls on my hike this weekend. It was going to be an epic hike, 11 miles, 1500 ft. elevation gain, high altitude. I got all the way up to the top of the mountain, I could hear the waterfall in the distance, but I could not get to it because of the killer manzanita brush. It was just too thick to punch through it, though I did try. But I will be back there someday again, I think I found a better route to try next time, with less brush.

KILLER BEES

Took Jadon and Nekoda to Bassi Falls yesterday. It was nice, but the flow was disappointing, only about a third of the normal flow in the creek for this time of year. Also, there were hundreds of bumblebees at Bassi Falls. I have never seen bees there before, but they were all over the place, swarming all around, and would not leave us alone the entire time we were there. It was crazy.

CRAZY BRUSH

Up on Ice House Rd this morning doing some new exploring and finding a new waterfall. It has been a couple years since I have been up on Ice House. I love that area. This is South Fork Rubicon River Falls, 37 ft. high. A nice cascade and still flowing well (but almost all the snow is melted and this flow will not last long). It was rather difficult to get to this falls, only a mile, but the manzanita brush was crazy. I found a way though.

THE DITCH

This is a beauty of a waterfall, 93 ft. high. It is found in a remote canyon on an unnamed stream. The hike was 8 miles total and very difficult. I named it Iowa Hill Ditch Falls (great name, huh), since it is found at the end of the aforementioned ditch. I realize it is in your face straight on, but I like how this angle shows of the beauty of the falls. I do have another angle that I will likely post later.

TADPOLES

Tadpole Canyon Falls, 186 ft. high. Last year when I was here, it was so foggy I could not see a thing! I got a glimpse of the waterfall for 10 seconds that day and managed to take a quick shot. I vowed to return again this year. No fog. Flowing a little better than last year as well (but it really should be flowing much stronger at this time of year). It is a beauty.

REMOTE

Upper West New York Canyon Falls, 150 ft. high. It was a tough hike down into a remote canyon with a 1200 ft. descent, to find this beauty on Sunday afternoon. It was worth the effort.

UPPER FALLS

This is the true Upper Falls on Canyon Creek, it is hidden away around a corner and the trail does not pass by it. I think a lot of people hike right by this without knowing it is there. It is a beauty though, 96 ft. high. The light could have been better when I was here, but I think the shot turned out ok.

THE BUMPIEST ROAD

The road to Bowman Lake is now open. The bumpiest, craziest, road ever. Normally it is not open until June or even July, but they have plowed it this year and also because of the awful snowpack this year, it is open so early, so I headed up there to see it in rare early season conditions. But there is no snow at all up there. There should be loads of snow right now. This is Weaver Lake Falls. I tried and tried and tried but I could not find any better of the waterfall. I could not get any closer due to very thick brush and very steep slopes. I think I'll have to return someday to try again.

GRACE

This is Far Upper Canyon Creek Falls, 65 ft. high. It has real grace and beauty, and was my second favorite of the waterfalls on this creek. I had light clouds over the sun when I was here, and this allowed the sun to enhance the color in the pool amazingly.

Well I am returned home from a crazy crazy hike Easter weekend. One creek. Five awesome waterfalls. 15 mile hike. 2500 ft elevation gain. One amazing day. It is early in the waterfall season but this one has taken an early and big lead for being the most spectacular waterfall I have seen so far this year. This is Lower Canyon Creek Falls, 142 ft. high, and what an incredible waterfall and location. Despite this being a very popular hike, with many waterfalls along this creek, almost no one visits this one, the most spectacular of all the waterfalls on this creek. It is located off the main trail and is not easy to get down to, and most people are oblivious to its existence as they pass right by it. But it is absolutely incredible, and was running full with snow melt this weekend.

You win some and you lose some in waterfall hunting. My topo maps indicated there might be a forty footer down in this canyon. All I found was this five footer, and a ten footer shortly below it (which was too hard to photograph). Oh well, such is the way of waterfall hunters. It was a fun hike, but it was extremely tough, and I will be regretting it when the poison oak rash sets in. Ugh.

MAD SCRAMBLE

I discovered this new waterfall, scrambling up the mountain above Devils Falls. This was the biggest of the falls I found, a a very decent 29 ft. high cascade. It was a mad scramble up the mtn, but worth it.

MORE CANYON

Here is a vertical shot of Canyon Creek Falls. Do you like this one or the horizontal shot better? There was no other place to photograph this waterfall, I was standing on rock outcropping in the middle of the creek, and could not move to either side due to the very deep pool. This was the only spot. But it sure is a beautiful place.

This is what I found this morning at the bottom of a very steep, remote, and poison oak infested canyon. Snyder Canyon Falls, at Foresthill, 45 ft high. It is not a particularly photogenic waterfall and not flowing great despite the recent rain, but I did what I could with it.

I Love It When A Plan Comes Together

Had a fantastic hike on Saturday, one of the best hikes I have done in a long time. It was tough, very steep, consisting of climbing up big boulders and over slippery little cascades, ticks, poison oak, fresh mountain lion scat. Yeah, it was awesome. All to get to this very out of the way waterfall. I have never heard of anyone hiking to this waterfall before. The rafters come to it all the time on their way down the Middle Fork American River, but I was certain there was no trail to it. Well, I found a trail. I was ecstatic. This is Canyon Creek Falls, 36 ft high. It is very pretty, and I think it would be fantastic with higher water flow. I am sure I will be back to this one someday.

SICKO

Not venturing out this weekend, as I am sick with a bad cold and feeling crappy. Ugh. This is from early January. I think I forgot to post it before now. It is Bear Ranch Creek Falls along the North Fork Feather River. It is difficult to photograph. There is only one spot to photograph this waterfall from and only one possible comp, I have tried to find other ones believe me.

Back to Devils Falls this weekend. Not really where I wanted to go but most creeks around here are not flowing too much these days. We have some rain in the forecast for this week, which is good, but we need a heck of a lot more this winter.
