Tejay van Garderen took a chunk of time out of his rivals on Stage 6 and opted to stay on this bike for the final steep climb up Metcalf Road (which averages over ten percent in pitch). We were in a good spot near the start and made our way over to the intersection here just in time to catch the last three riders coming through -- on their way to the Metcalf climb. Great day for (watching) a tough ride.

And (too late for a spoiler alert) he held on to his yellow jersey after a strong ride up Mount Diablo on Saturday and finished with the win on Sunday. I was able to be there on Friday and Saturday and enjoyed the event (and even the ride up Diablo, as far as they would let us go).

In 1970, this 917K won the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race. Not by inches or seconds, mind you, but by 45 laps of the course. Plenty of time to pull over before the finish, grab a shower, catch a bite of something, have a nice chat and then finish with a win...

This 962C is the second of 16 factory 962 racers made, with three FIA wins in 1985. It still has its original engine and monocoque (body).

Rearward visibility from the cockpit of a Lamborghini Countach is just about nil, but with this beast that shouldn't be an issue (except when backing up -- and there's a technique for that).

Go check your poster from high school -- this is the Darth Vader version in all black with the big rear wing. The leggy redhead in full leathers is up to you. (See the Dec '83 Car & Driver cover from back in the day in case it was somehow not seared into your adolescent brain.)

The Porsche 935 in the background is the only car to have won at Daytona and Sebring in the same year (1982) and has a string of other victories and podium finishes. And this silver beast is just another Gullwing. Ho hum. Bring a thick wallet...

Derek Bell won the World Sports Car Championship twice, the Daytona 24 hour race three times, and Le Mans five (!) times. And he's been described as one of the most likable drivers of his generation. That's an unbeatable combination in my book.

(And yes, I'd love to strap in to do a drive 'round the 'Ring or some other with Bell at the wheel. I wouldn't eat for quite some time beforehand...)
