Thessaloniki's harbour ... not an HDR

Emil9497 Photography & Art posted a photo:

Never underestimate the quality and the diversity of your photographic equipment ... A really good photograph can only be taken when your equipment has the potential to properly "do the job" for you !!!!! No matter how "dab hand" the photographer may be, the truly amazing photographs that all of us see here and there wouldn't be feasible to capture without the use of proper (not necessarily expensive) photographic equipment ... !!!!!

The back lit scene that you see above was taken at the harbor of Thessaloniki ...

I tried to capture a proper frame with my standard Nikon 18-55 lens but it was impossible because the final result was lucking the desired detail ... Not to mention the fact that the place where I was standing on was not only too far but also heavily protected with barbed wire (still cannot understand the reason for such heavy "protection" of a practically empty spot) and it was absolutely impossible for a photographer to use a tripod, not to mention to take a clear capture ...

It was then that I decided to use my Tamron 70-300 lens ... My view finder started to give me totally different views of the same place !!! A little compromise for the proper shutter speed value to 1/40 s (the shot needed slower shutter speed but from within the wire my hands could not provide a steadier frame) ... et voila΄ !!!!

To all of you DSLR users, a small piece of advice !!! Always keep a 70-300 (or 55-200) zoom lens within easy reach !!!! You never really know when it may come in handy !!!!

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Tamron 70-300 mm lens, Manual mode, f 10, ISO 200, focal length 105 mm, manual exposure selection, white balance set to cloudy weather, center weighted average metering mode, focus mode AF-A, shutter speed 1/40 s, HDR processing had nothing new to contribute to the frame's elegance, no tripod, no flash, original RAW image dimensions 4288 X 2848 pixels ....
Cyclades, Santorini, Fira .... HDR + Orton effect

Emil9497 Photography & Art posted a photo:

Creative photo processing is not useful only for making a good image better, or an excellent image superb ... It can also be used in order to save an overexposed or underexposed image, to make it presentable, useful !!!!

The above seen travel shot is not going to participate in an "Original theme" photo contest !!! It was taken six years ago, at Santorini, by a Pentax Optio T20, my first 7.0 MP compact digital camera, an era when the only thing I knew about photography was to effectively and gracefully (from what I'm told) press the shutter button ... Anyway, I managed to enclose into my camera's memory card the above seen totally overexposed shot, whose only real value is its wide-angle "completeness" from a synthesis point of view, additionally emphasized by the foreground lying interesting architectural details ...

The totally overexposed sky of the original frame was replaced by the above seen, bright blue, extremely graceful one (by the way, whenever you come face to face with interesting skies, take them down !!! If need be from totally different weather conditions !!!! You really never know when and how they may come in handy) !!! Pseudo HDR processing was my very next move, in order to acquire useful visual information all over the frame !!!!

I used the overexposed white of the buildings as a means of emphasizing on the chromatically "white" character of the Greek Cycladic island, selective saturation adjustments (on blue and yellow colors) in order to place particular emphasis on the contrast of this white character to the not so white painted buildings and the orton effect in order to create a blurred atmosphere (and, why hide it, to cover the imperfections of the not so well sharpened initial shot !!!

The result proudly stands in front of your eyes !!!

EXIF data have no meaning !!!!
Still bearing traces of pride ... HDR + ORTON effect

Emil9497 Photography & Art posted a photo:

No doubt Grayscale photography (I prefer this term to the "B/W photography" one) has its own unique place and of course its distinct value in the vast world of photography ... It's a means of simplifying an image's message, of discarding unnecessary information, of initiating directly its viewer to the essence of the scene, of carrying his/her attention away from the petty and the less important, of creating a unique atmosphere ...

Recognizing and appreciating all of the above, one may easily ask, how come you prefer to work with colorful images then? The answer is because "I truly adore the communicative power of color" my friends !!!

I try not to use it as a means of simply attracting attention, but as an additional "special" information carrier to the viewer ...

Let's focus our attention at the above seen frame for a few moments ... The ochre - red based rusty colors on the boat's bow communicate its age, its long exposure to rainy and windy conditions, as well as its current status of "abandonment" ... The still intense blue color of its base communicates that it used to have a dexterous owner who was really taking good care of it ... The not entirely yellowish hue of the surrounding grass communicates that June is about to make its presence around the corner, while the magenta derived colors of the sky indicate that the sun's ruling hours of the day are coming to an end ...

Do not underestimate the power of the color my friends ... Use it to your image's advantage !!!!

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Nikon Nikkor 18-55 lens, Manual mode, f 8, ISO 200, focal length 22 mm, manual exposure selection, auto-focusing mode, cloudy weather white balance adjustments, pattern metering mode, shutter speed 1/160 s, HDR processing was made after a single RAW frame, Orton Effect applied after HDR processing, exact lighting conditions are successfully conveyed to the viewer, no tripod, no flash, original RAW image dimensions 4288 X 2848 pixels ....

A hymn to Orton effect processing ... HDR

Emil9497 Photography & Art posted a photo:

My next three shots, including the above seen one, are devoted to the combination of HDR processing along with Orton Effect. An atmospheric effect that suits more (in my opinion) still subjects !!! An effect that transforms the image from a plain, good no doubt frame, into a "blurred" yet absolutely "concrete" photographic message !!! Into an absolutely refined "dreamy" concept !!! Keep your eyes still on the tree for example and you will "feel" more than its plain figure !!! You will feel its very three dimensional existence !!!

I definitely encourage you to try it my friends !!!! See my personal attempts on this "stunning" photo processing alternative "point of view" !!! www.flickr.com/photos/emil9497photography__art/sets/72157... ..... HDR" />

I have always been wondering why on earth Photography is not included among the seven arts ... If Cinematography is considered to be the 7th ART, then definitely Photography should have been the 6th in chronological line... But this unfortunately seems to be hardly the case !!!!

The truth is my friends that Photography has always been considered by most people a plain, technical (therefore not creative) grasp of reality, once a chemical, nowadays a digital take-down of a moment in time ... nothing more or nothing less ...

But for me my friends photography is an initial incentive that I (the photographer) was lucky enough to receive, clever enough to realize and competent enough to elegantly transmit it to you, my viewers ...

It's nothing less than a "Natural Painting" my eyes saw, my camera imprisoned, my Software transformed and you visually receive the overall effort's final result ...

It is a message ... It is a feeling ... It is a hope ... No matter what everybody might claim, PHOTOGRAPHY IS A TRUE FORM OF ART !!!

It's the third frame in a row that comes from the same photo-shooting session and a few more will follow ... We are still around the small but amazingly powerful river called Angitis ... A river that flows vigorously at the area of Drama, shaping for many centuries now the foundations of a broad-based hill, thus creating the only cave of the Balkan peninsula with flowing water inside it ... The cave of Maaras.

What you see above is the habitat about a hundred meters aways form the cave's entrance ... What you see in the hyper-link at the end of this sentence is the cave itself !!!!
Since it was very early in the morning the cave was not open for public visitations yet ...
Nature's awakening around Angitis river ... HDR

HDR" />

Experimenting around my equipment's technical limits has always been one of my favorite habits ...

The photo-shooting conditions at the area of Angitis river of Drama's prefecture were truly unique on the morning of March the 13th ... I must have been the only moving species within two kilometers range all around that very spot, so I had the time to experiment a lot !!! I set Nikon's aperture value to f 9 and I took some crystal clear photos of the scene seen above but I was not content ... I needed something different, so I decided to play with the DOF !!!

I set the aperture value on 3.5 and I manually set the focus on the tree's trunk ... I set the shutter speed to 0.5 sec, seeking for water's blur, not particularly risking for an overexposed frame at the same time, since it was still pretty dark ... I took the shot seen above ...

As soon as I saw it on my camera's monitor I knew I did rather well !!!!

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Nikon Nikkor 18-55 lens, Manual mode, f 3.5, ISO 200, focal length 18 mm, manual exposure selection, manual focusing, white balance adjustments were made manually, pattern metering mode, shutter speed 1/2 s, HDR processing was made after a single frame, exact lighting conditions are successfully conveyed to the viewer, use of tripod, no flash, original RAW image dimensions 4288 X 2848 pixels ....
Early morning lighting games over Angitis River ... HDR

HDR" />

"Springtime" is finally here !!! Hand in hand with Nature's seasonal awakening, my inner urge to go out for some really early morning shooting awakens too ...

This time I decided to pay a visit to one of, what it proved to be, the most picturesque places of Drama's prefecture ...The Angitis river and the wonderful Nature that is formed all around it and mainly due to it ... To tell you the truth I didn't expect to come face to face with such an amazing place, with such interesting early morning lighting conditions, a real challenge for my camera to convincingly capture ... I had paid a visit to this place before, maybe about twelve years ago, but photography was not included in my prime interests then ... Something that I'll never cease to regret ...

Anyway, manual focusing was the only way I could work in order to capture the petty amount of both natural and artificial light that existed all around ...

Don't forget my friends that before sunrise shooting at a photography inviting place, may actually push your photo-shooting technical capability to its limits ...

Every time I do it I return wiser and definitely more experienced !!!

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Nikon Nikkor 18-55 lens, Manual mode, f 9, ISO 200, focal length 18 mm, manual exposure selection, manual focusing, white balance set to cloudy weather, pattern metering mode, shutter speed 6 s, HDR processing was made after a single long exposure frame, exact lighting conditions are successfully conveyed to the viewer, use of tripod, no flash, original RAW image dimensions 4288 X 2848 pixels ....
The "spirit" of a moment and of a place ... not an HDR

Emil9497 Photography & Art posted a photo:

Most people believe (and I'm not referring to photo professionals or semiprofessionals) that shooting photographs is not a very difficult task .. After all the only thing that you actually have to do in the end is to simply press a button ... But as most of you are well aware of, this is hardly the case my friends !!!

It is very difficult to enclose properly into your camera's sensor the minuscule amount of light that sometimes barely touches the objects that stay motionless in front of you ... In other words to capture the true "spirit" that a place exhales at a specific moment in time is anything but an easy task ...

This was the second time that I was paying a photo - shooting visit το this small Greek Orthodox chapel that stands alone, people-less, deserted most of the times at the top of a nearby to my house hill ... Every time I go there I really feel that the place has a lot more to offer than simply silence ... That it actually is a genuine superset of the physical things that exist inside it ... A door that connects you to your inner spiritual quest and challenges !!! An excellent place to pray !!!!

The atmosphere around is that makes me feel this way ...

And I wanted to capture this atmosphere the best way I knew how !!!

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Nikon Nikkor 18-55 lens, Aperture mode, f 11, ISO 200, focal length 18 mm, manual exposure selection, white balance set to cloudy weather, spot average metering mode, shutter speed 1/10 s, HDR processing was completely unnecessary, the frame underwent only a little contrast and saturation adjustments, exact lighting conditions are successfully conveyed to the viewer, use of tripod, no flash, original RAW image dimensions 4288 X 2848 pixels ....

The actual size of Milopotamos lake is no more than 20.000 square meters (it sounds more than it actually is). It is located at a rather waterless broader area of Drama's prefecture, managing to create a very small "oasis" like environment around it !!!

The emphasis on the above seen frame though is placed on the synthesis' attributes !!! I could easily turn the image upside down and have a pretty much visually similar outcome !!! There is almost a perfect symmetry everywhere !!! The atmosphere on that amazing last October's photographic afternoon was rather dim, with a yellowish hue all around !!! Subtle HDR processing helped the capture keep this chromatic balance all around !!!

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Tamron 70-300 mm lens, Aperture mode, f 8, ISO 200, focal length 70 mm, manual exposure selection, white balance set to cloudy weather, center weighted average metering mode, shutter speed 1/30 s, HDR processing was made out of only one RAW capture, exact lighting conditions are successfully conveyed to the viewer, use of tripod, no flash, original RAW image dimensions 4288 X 2848 pixels ....
Still winter ... HDR

HDR" />

Many a time I cast a glance at this very scene while driving !!! After all the tree is located about a hundred meters away from the main road between Adriani and Drama !!!! Every single one of those times I was making a promise to myself that one of those days I would capture this scene with my D90 ... The colors of the sky yesterday were much too intense for just an additional, unfulfilled self-promise so I grasped my D90 and my tripod and set off for the promising capture ...

The sun was about to set and it had been raining for a couple of days now. My only wrong estimate was the mud between the road and the tree !!! My feet were deeply buried inside it but I was pretty determined to take the shot anyway !!! I didn't want to bury my all brand new tripod inside the mud though, so I decided to take the shot manually !!!!

After setting Aperture mode to f10 (seeking additionally for a solid crystal clear grasp of Pangaion mountain at the frame's background), I manually focused on the tree. Nikon D90's light meter indicated 1/10 s as the appropriate shutter speed. I took the shot manually anyway and despite my 51 years of age it seems that my hands can still grasp the camera steadily (Thank God !!!).

It's still winter my friends !!!!

Amazing natural and artificial lighting games on Nikiforos's Railway Station building !!! Enjoy the beautiful after sunset atmosphere with the small stony fountain on the left, the abandoned but still in excellent condition building and the three still showing off their intense red color chairs that were once used by travellers !!!

I wanted the viewer's eye to be able to immediately focus on the light of the lamp on the building and I believe I pretty much did it !!!
Typical British environment ... HDR

HDR" />

To tell you the truth my friends I've always been fascinated by the medieval atmosphere upon which specific European cities base their contemporary appearance ... It really amazes me how they manage to keep their city's environment exactly as it used to be merely five hundred years ago !!! Wandering around the city of Cambridge with a camera in one's hands (safely wrapped and protected against rain, an event extremely likely to occur at any time of day in that area of the Globe), one may come across some very beautiful and rather far from the "ordinary" scenes ....

Like the above one presented for example !!! The ready to relinquish it's content on earth sky along with the intensely "Medieval" appearance of the city, both mentally as well as physically transfer you into another era !!!! An era of knights and horses ... An era whose scenes though can now permanently be stored as "memories" into your DSLR's memory card !!!!!!! An HDR result that I'm really proud off due to the fact that it came out only from one single RAW capture !!!

It was my second visit to Great Britain and particularly to Cambridge but this time me and my Nikon D90 actually had adequate time to move around a lot and take extremely elegant photographs, under amazing looking "British like" afternoon skies !!! This time the pictures I took actually managed to push my HDR digital processing capability to its limits !!!

In any case I enjoyed it !!! As a matter of fact I'm still enjoying processing them !!! Bear with me my friends !!! I'm going to show you a Cambridge city full of HDR aura !!!
