This is the first direct Arena, Leeds.

The Leeds based bank announced a five year sponsorship deal with SMG, operators of the arena, which will see it branded as the "first direct Arena" as part of the bank's strategy to reach out to a younger customer base. It is the first major sponsorship deal that first direct has entered into in its 24 year history.

Bruce Springsteen will play the first gig at the arena in July after personally requesting the date, while Elton John will officially open the arena in September.

Inside the new 13,000 seat/13,500 capacity first direct Arena in Leeds. The auditorium has been designed so that you get a full view of the stage no matter where you sit. The design also supports what is being dubbed as the best acoustics in Europe. The management team are hoping to attract acts that until now have never ventured outside London where the Royal Albert Hall takes top billing acoustically.

Uniquely in the UK, the roofing rig can be lowered to floor level for set up of show lighting and other effects. In other venues engineers would need to climb to the top and attach equipment from above, or using scaffolding.

This is Bullboy, the Bradford Bulls mascot grazing on East Bierley Marsh this morning.

Bullboy and his keeper visited East Bierley Primary School to take part in their assembly and Bullboy had his photo taken with the children.

Tonight the Bulls are taking on Leeds Rhinos and they're visiting local school to drum up extra support.

Birkenshaw Industrial Society

The Birkenshaw Industrial Society Limited was established in 1866, with this building dating to 1887.

The society was a cooperative interested in driving innovation in industry. Today, the building is home to the Cooperative convenience store.

Ancient Village Stocks

The 405 A.D. Act of Parliament decreed ‘that every town or seignory shall provide a pair of stocks’. If they
failed to do this the town would be charged a penalty of 100 shillings. The ancient stocks in the village
green are a good example of the punishment used in earlier times. They were positioned at this location,
near the church, so that the offenders could be watched and were there as a warning to passers by.

Five-Rise Locks

Bingley Five-Rise locks are situated on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, 16 miles from Leeds and 110 miles from Liverpool, in the town of Bingley, just outside Bradford.

The locks were built in 1774 by four local stonemasons and were designed by John Longbottom of Halifax.

Somewhat uniquely, the five locks are joined together, where the higher gate of the lower lock serves as the lower gate of the next (you would normally expect to see a series of individual locks with two gates each). The locks span 320 feet and raise boats over 59 feet from top to bottom.

The locks won a National Heritage award in 1975 and were the North West regional winner of the Canal and Riverside Trust's Waterway Length Competition in 1993.
