Peeking Pollinator

While adding a new mulch layer to one of my gardens, I noticed a minor swarm of little white butterflies around one of the flowering bushes (and oddly enough the new mulch). Naturally, photography gained priority over mulching.

Be sure to check out the rest of the set for more from this shoot and a few other [probably] spring pollinators scattered through my photostream.

This little guy was both, well, smaller than the others and (obviously) a different species. There was also a monarch butterfly working the area, but it wasn't very cooperative, sadly.

Clouds

So I've suddenly gotten back into time-lapse photography. This time using clouds instead of stars. These clouds were rolling through the skies over Lake Mirror, as seen from Hollis Gardens in Lakeland, FL.

Details (the stitching kills the metadata):
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM on a tripoded Canon EOS REBEL T1i
f/8.0
1/200 second exposures
ISO 100
68 exposures shot at roughly 5 second intervals (yes, by hand) initially edited in Lightroom 5 beta, stitched in Startrails 2.0 (of all things) and cleaned up in Photoshop CS5.

This was my first crack at time-lapsed clouds, so it's a little rough around the edges, but live and learn...and read this article for a jumping off point.

...Damascus Steel. Well, Damascus style steel. The dagger this wonderfully wavy stuff makes up was forged in Pakistan, of all places. While inferior to modern steel, this stuff was renowned for its durability and sharpness a few centuries ago. These days, it's mostly renowned for looking really neat, especially in macro photos.

Knee update: I ended up having surgery on it and the doctor repaired a bit of torn cartilage. Clearly it's feeling good enough for me to do macro photography and hopefully I'll be able to get back to work in the next few weeks.

Hey there Flickr, I am indeed still alive, just busy. I did find time to update the header on my facebook profile for the holidays, hence the odd crop. I was going to upload the uncropped version of my odd little Christmas mascot, but I had composed to shot for the crop and (SURPRSINGLY) it looks better cropped. Huh.

Anyways, I hope you all have enjoy your winter (or summer for my friends down under) and hopefully I will do more flickr things in the next few weeks.

The kid is my cousin Parker. His mother, my cousin Camden, is holding him. They were visiting Florida briefly from waaaay out in California, so I couldn't pass up my chance to photograph Parker while he's still young. I like babies. They're always great fun to photograph (being ridiculously cute, as they are).

Natural light and a large gold reflector more or less behind me, check the Exif data for the rest of the what-I-did info, if you're interested.
