Uncommon and declining according to Sibley's, proposed for the endangered species list in 2011. Literally flew into my viewfinder as I was shooting a Hooded Warbler during a fallout in Port Aransas.

The male Nuttall's in our neighborhood is becoming a regular. He now will tolerate me for moments at a time. He's always polite and knocks and chirps for about 5 minutes before coming to the patio suet feeder, so it gives me time to stop working in the shop and get set up.

A good time by all was had at the Sage-Grouse Lek this weekend. Some great pictures on Vivek Khanzode's, Tom Grey's, and Harjeet/Sarbloh streams.

I (and our SCVAS photography coaches) will be teaching a bird photography class at EVOLS in Palo Alto's bayland on May 4th. These classes always fill up fast. See EVOLS.org for more info. Learn some photography, meet fellow enthusiasts, and contribute to a good cause while having fun. :-)

Continental ABA US Photolifer #506. I've been chasing this species on the Council Road lakes in Nome, Alaska, since 2005. Once I got terrible scope views. Finally it shows up in California, and stays put for a week! With Vivek Khanzode, who said point the wheel south, and we did! Whoopie!

Continental U.S. Photolifer species #505 - An east coast bird found on the west Pescadero coast. First found by Garth Harwood yesterday. We (Ron Wolf and I) couldn't find it so while we were having fun with a Ruby Crowned Kinglet the warbler literally flew into my viewfinder saying take my picture. I just kept pressing the button. :-)

Fabulous day with Ron Wolf learning about mushrooms - Ron even pointed out a Rufous Candy Cane mushroom which I've been looking for, for a while - tastes like maple syrup according to the field guide (no I didn't eat one) - and then of course we also saw deathcap mushrooms ... which cost a liver and two kidneys to eat. Yours.

One of the questions I asked Ron was why do mushrooms choose to be poisonous (in the evolutionary sense) meaning there didn't seem to be any ecological / biological advantage - his answer was that they don't , but being digesters of all sorts of funky stuff, they have developed chemical pathways and reactions that aren't always compatible with other digestive systems and pathways.

Nature is amazing - an inspirational day. Thanks Ron.

Some moments are simply magic... Evening on a pond in Nome, a tundra swan and I, eye to eye. Right after I shot this, Josh Parks drove up and we went birding. A wonderful night.
