So we made her hardcore.

Drove her to Westwood, got her hair did, got her face made up, brought her back home, shined a wicked bright light in her face, snapped off some shots.

In between all that there were donuts, cookies, jokes about pregnancy, conversations about marriage, about kids, about music, sitting in traffic avoiding uncomfortable silences with conversation, a spot of rain, a loss of energy, a second wind, a pool, an uncomfortable silence.

In other words, lots of fun.

Jen's getting married tomorrow. After months of planning, aggravation, stress, screw ups, bad hair cuts, seating arrangements, revised seating arrangements, food tasting, dress fittings, dress shopping with mom, dress shopping with me, wacky wedding showers, bachelorette party, bachelor party, it's all happening.

All this work, what's the point?

I'll tell you the point: all the shwag they get. Jen and her, as of tomorrow husband, Shammi's place the other day, and it's just filled with new silverware, dishes, pots, pans, cookers, and other assorted things that I would hate to pay for but love to have. It's like a Bar Mitzvah for adults, yeah, you gotta plan and do a song and dance for the guests, but in the end, you end up with a whole lotta stuff.

Oh sure, there's love and commitment and whatnot, but oh, the stuff you get!!! Maybe they'll get some cool old relatives to show up, the kind of old folks who don't give you gifts, but just big fat envelopes they stuff into your suit pocket before patting you on the back with the force of a hurricane.

Marriage, like a birthday, but with better food.

But I am an awesome photographer with a large ego, and so I see such a statement as not a warning, but a challenge. Also, I happen to think she's wrong, as does Kristopher!

I wake up tired.

I walk the dog in complete darkness, unable to see clearly, occasionally stumbling into a bush, or tripping on a crack in the sidewalk.

I sit at my computer for an hour, occasionally giving serious consideration to laying my head on the desk and taking a quick cat-nap.

I wrestle with whether or not to jog, weighing my own laziness versus my dog's need for exercise versus my dog's tendency to lead me into the middle of street & traffic.

More computer. More struggling not to fall asleep.

All this before six in the morning.

Perhaps five hours of sleep a night is not quite enough. But when my girlfriend wakes up in the middle of the night asking a question composed of complete nonsense, still mostly dreaming, how can I not spend several minutes giggling to myself?

Ooh, also, had a weird dream where I was in a glass elevator, and I was talking to someone in the elevator, all the while being deathly afraid of how high up we were going, and when somebody asked what I did for a living, I said, "elevator repairman."

Fuck does that mean?

While trying to get a shot of the virtually abandonded CALIFORNIAN HOTEL sign, by single-handedly scaling a short yet spiky fence, Kim got herself a boo boo. Sufficiently mollified, she, using my motto of Work Smart Not Hard, went searching and found a Kim-size hole in the fence that allowed her access to the sign without any further shenanigans.

And who the deuce carries band-aids around with them???

her husband bought her a polaroid 680 for their wedding anniversary, and a bunch of film to go with it. they drove up the coast, taking photos, getting a feel for the camera. i'd heard about her before i met her, which is actually a bit of a strange feeling, somewhat akin to meeting a celebrity, whom you feel a kinship for, yet have no actual shared experiences on which to base such a kinship. i chatted her up for a li'l bit, trying to dissolve that barrier, take it to a place where we actually knew each other. but how much is that possible in the time it takes to check out her camera do ensure it's not defective, and then lead her over to the window for a photo? i hope i am, at least, remembered fondly.

Met this guy the other day, didn't think much of him until we started discussing another photograher, Mike Brodie, who hitched rides on trains to travel from one coast to another. It was then that Rich perked up, smile on his face, and began to tell me of his Rail-Riding days, several years ago, as he and his buddies would hop a train and ride from florida to louisiana. He told me of the rail-riding community, a fiercely tight clique, with their own slang; their own code, written on the inside walls of train cars; of the potential for violence from both the railyard security and other travelers, who disliked casual travelers on their turf. I was fascinated, having done so little travel myself, and never going to such lengths to get from one point to another. He described the thrill of being on a train while it rode a narrow bridge, water on either side, "like flying", and of the midwest Punks who rode a train to his town and just stayed.

Sometimes I wonder what i'm missing by not spending hours listening to everyone I meet.

Another weekend, another morning spent taking pix with my friends. Today Kim, Drew and myself went to a small park just around the corner from my house, where stands the only remnants of a long-forgotten hotel. For some reason, someone decided to just put the signs up at a far edge of the park, plunk down a fence, and leave them there for all to see. So next time you're in LA, drive into Los Feliz, go south on Riverside and look out your passenger-side window, and damned if you don't see two huge CALIFORNIAN signs, and a tiny HOTEL sign hiding behind them.

Alexis(aka Flybutter) tells great stories, always with at least a grin on her face. Except when the story is about her getting screwed over. her anger during such stories is visible on her face, to such an extant you become can feel it coming off her in waves.

Her stories create a feeling of comfort around her, they are unselfconscious, full of endearing details.

She shoots with a Spectra, a wider camera than mine, and where usually I am, ironically, not fond of having my photo taken, I make exception for fellow Polaroid enthusiasts. She doesn't make me regret it.

A good guest, she takes interest in the books I have on display, in the girlfriend who is wary of strangers, in the hallway that is wallpapered with Polaroids.

And there are no complaints as she is instructed to sit completely still for a photo, lit only by an iMac.

Of course, maybe it was the bellyful of Chick'n & Waffles that lulled her into such a state.

As a Hanukkah present to myself, I bought the recently released GONZO, a book of photographs and memorabilia by and from the life of Hunter Thompson.

And gadzooks, it is awesome, and i am truly, madly and deeply in love with it. I love it only slightly less than the other book pictured, the Stanley Kubrick Archive, which is about as complete a book on Kubrick as one can imagine, and which my sublime girlfriend bought for me.

I just wanted to share, not to worry, more photos of beautiful people coming shortly.

I also recommend that if you are a fan of either Thompson or Kubrick, you get these books immediately. Turns out Dr. Thompson was a deadshot of a photographer. And Kubrick was something slightly better than a genius.

And these books, they is soooo pretty. You will thank yourself, and me.

Ain't they both just the dreamy-est?

Allie's dad passed away this weekend. This is to let her know we're thinking about her.

It's something we all have to deal with, eventually, and it's instinctive to try to dismiss the event as "part of the process of living", or even "something we all have to deal with, eventually", but for the person going through it, it is the worst thing in the world, i should think. it's not normal, not part of anything. it is loss, unfair and horrible. you try to steel yourself by thinking about it in advance, and you may even go so far as to think you're "ready". but then it comes, in whatever shape it comes, and there is only devastation. for those of us not dealing with it, we see the other end, past the acute grief, see everything in the world returning to a functioning normal, but for those In It, that's so far away as to be fantasy.

So, for Allie, I can't empathize, I can't understand, I won't say it's all going to be okay, but I am thinking of ya, and we are here for ya, should you need it.

He runs my local comic book store. Which is cool, but here's where it gets interesting. For his wedding anniversary, he wanted to get his wife a Polaroid 680, was looking for them on eBay, but it was going to end up arriving late. So I lent him one of mine. Now, I barely know this guy, have only had a few conversations with him, but when he told me he was having problems looking for a Polaroid camera, I just up and offered. I'm probably an idiot, but when it comes to Polaroid, doing something odd and reckless tends to work out. So I went with it. And a week later he returned it, no problems. And now there's one more person out there with a fine camera in hand, and a bunch of film to be used. And that's good enough for me.
