Amanda, in the Best Light of the Day

Lou O' Bedlam posted a photo:

Spent a few hours yesterday going back through the archives, putting together a big FUTURISTIC project.

Hit upon this shoot from last year, where I took Amanda to the ranch for a shoot with a bunch of fellow photographers.

Loved getting a crew together, seeing how different people worked. Was glad we brought models, didn't just sit around shooting each other, which has its charms, but can definitely get old fast.

Of course, it was odd working with a model so young (fifteen), and it's also a bit of an adjustment working while being watched by others, something I'm not a huge fan of. But I seem to feel better when it's other photographers, other people doing the same thing. It's strangers oogling what tends to bug the living shit out of me.

Good times. Need to do something like that again soon...

Also, I now feel compelled to mention as often as possible, I'm teaching a class in Seattle next month! Click for DETAILS!!!!

Asked this question last year, found myself thinking about it again this weekend. I got the film back from the ranch shoot, found myself relieved, then glad, then excited, then wicked excited. The film got developed! The shots turned out like I wanted! YAY!!!

And so, I'm curious, what's your favorite shot? Which shot, this past year, this past life, really got you jumping up and down and doing a crude version of the robot?G'head and post 'em in the comments below, tell me (us, because EVERYONE IS WATCHING) why you dig 'em so.

Katie, Back-Lit in My Apartment

Lou O' Bedlam posted a photo:

I began writing this with "The only thing I like about this shot is the light. It's all cock-eyed, she's too dark, the expression is strange, she looks a bit sleepy, I'm shooting from a strange angle."

And all the while I was writing this, I was looking back at the shot, trying to articulate what I didn't like.

And I began to like it.

Ain't that something?

This is, as you should know by now, Katie. She stopped in at my house for a quick shoot before she went to audition for...I think it was a Nike commercial.

She's just recently decided to give modeling a shot, and during the shoot I found myself uttering the phrase, "you sure you want to go into modeling?"

Which seems silly, having seen her, having taken pictures of her and having my mind continually blown by how good she looks in photos.

But what concerned me was the attention that must be paid by a model to their appearance. The way you have to tie how you feel to how you look, that each inch, each pound, each blemish, each stray hair carries significance.

As someone who is reasonably vain, I know a smidge of that discomfort when you see something "wrong" in the mirror.

Feels like taking a job that asks for perfection, when that is but an ideal and never a reality, that's just asking for pain.

And me, I fucking hate pain.

Laurenn & Her Wall O' Hookers

Lou O' Bedlam posted a photo:

It's happened a surprising amount of times, lately. Hear about someone through friends, or find someone online, actually meet them, end up thinking the world of them.

I don't know if it's that I know what I want from a friend better than I did when I was younger, or if I'm just hanging out in the kind of circles where folks more like myself congregate, but I've made several fun and satisfying friendships of late.

Laurenn is the latest, someone I've known online for a little while, and known about for much longer.

Given the chance to actually meet her, I said yes without hesitation, hopped on a plane to Vegas to hang out w/her and her husband (who's also ace), Alex.

And there was a surprising lack of awkwardness. Sure, we'd spoken online for months, but anyone can tell you there's a world of difference between talking online and hanging out in person.

And yet it was smooth as silk. Common interests and attitudes and senses of humor and backgrounds and experiences = great weekend in Vegas.

And no gambling = no money lost = great weekend in Vegas.

It's also great knowing another artist, or, more importantly, an artist I like and respect, because it's always helpful being able to talk about...well, art things. Playing to the audience, hitting a creative wall, wondering if your work features Male Gaze, Laurenn's been a great person to talk to.

So yeah, go make some internet friends!!!!

Oh, and holy shit, I almost forgot to mention the WALL OF HOOKER CARDS she's put up in her studio. Magic, man, really magic. Dirty porn magic, which is my favorite kind.

Long day of work yesterday, long day of work today.

So here's me working at half-wattage, because, seriously, i don't like working.

i don't like being somewhere i don't want to be, and being unable to leave.

i also dislike wearing a uniform. and talking down because some of my co-workers are morons.

However, work = money. And I do have a particular fondness for money, and more specifically, the things money gives me.

Like the ability to process film. That's nice.

Ooh, and buy Polaroid film, I like that.

And pay hitmen to eliminate my enemies. That one's invaluable.

So, here's to money! And murder-for-hire!!

What's everyone up to this weekend?

Oh, and I got another question: what do y'all do for a living? Hm? Hm?

Carré, in Her Backyard

Lou O' Bedlam posted a photo:

I've developed a head cold, and am now suffering through day 4.

What has this to do with you, you wonder?

My head is currently trapped in an ever-tightening sinus-vice. Yet I write, I post, FOR YOU!!!! I SUFFER FOR YOU!!!!

I'll also have you know that my voice is now at least an octave and a half deeper. Way my voice is now, I could have a lady out of her knickers simply by reading the phone book.

Which is a horrible segue to Carré, about whose knickers I know absolutely nothing.

I can tell you that, and this was to be the original theme of this description, before its tangent into my ailments and associated Barry White voice, having had breakfast with Carré last weekend, I was reminded of a facet of photography I truly enjoy.

In addition to being able to stare at beautiful women to my heart's content, I also have the pleasure of meeting really cool people, and occasionally even becoming their friend.

During breakfast I thought to myself, "wow, we started hanging out just because I wanted to take your picture, and now we're actually friends and boy, I've had this good luck with several people and ain't life funny because, boy this waffle is rather good, but I sure wish it wasn't cold, hm, I wonder what Portland's like right now, and for some reason I really hate that hipster couple across from us, ooh, pretty jogger..." well, it just goes on like that for awhile, because I have weird brain things.

So let's all just take a moment and appreciate the opportunities photography has given us.

Sure, I get to make art, be micro-popular, and write off a bunch of things on my taxes.

But I also get to hang out with some pretty swell people. And that's a damned fine thing.

The time is 449am. Work just ended, not thirty minutes ago. I officially call "pass" on Wednesday.

Here's more Del. Go ahead and make up your own description, drop it into the comments.

Me, I'm gonna sleep until...well, probably only a few hours, cuz that's how fucked up working all night is, you can't just sleep all day and make up for it. Your body's all cuckoo-bananas, doesn't know what to do with itself.

I'll probably end up pregnant or something.

Here's Del smiling (he does that a lot, and science bless him for it) up on the blog: blog.louobedlam.com/post/85499918/exhausted-heres-del-bet...

Natasha, Sitting Comfortably Amongst the Nasturshums

Lou O' Bedlam posted a photo:

There was nothing she wouldn't do.

Which probably sounds horrible, but it's true!

At least when it came to things to photograph, Natasha was up for anything. Climbing a tree, walking through spiderwebs and thick foliage, sitting in bug-infested Nasturshums, hiking through a gigantic park.

Lady grew up on a ranch, that's what she kept reminding me when I hesitated to suggest something a bit harrowing.

And, apparently, compared to wrangling horses and raking a lawn the size of my apartment complex, climbing up a few trees ain't nothin'.

All models take note!!!

More Natasha, smiling even, up on the blog: blog.louobedlam.com/post/89585290/natashalaughs

Natasha, Sitting Comfortably Amongst the Nasturshums

Tash, Amongst the Arundo Donax

Lou O' Bedlam posted a photo:

I took Tash to The Park last week. It was a full day, actually, park, Apple Pan for burgers, then frozen yogurt.

Because, hell, why not? Man's got a day off, man should wring all the fun he can out of it.

Which is why Natasha was an excellent choice for that day. Lady loved lying down in the lilly pad things, it was her idea to climb up in a tree, and then another tree.

Actually, she wanted to climb every tree we saw, but I was able to dissuade her from the more difficult ones.

Don't need no dead lady in a park. You know they'll think I done killed her. And I ain't goin' down for no murder!!!!

Then the lady was more than happy to chomp down on some burgers and scarf up some frozen yogurt.

If every model ate burgers....ah, to live in a perfect world.

So, my assistant Emily has returned for spring break.

And I'm really happy to see her!!!! YAY!!!! I mean, c'mon, ain't she a peach?

She's only here for a week, which means I only have a week to convince her to drop out of school, move back to LA, and assist me (for free) full time!!!

Easy.

So I'm gonna do my best to show her a great time, i.e. gonna try to shoot as much as possible this week.

So expect a lot of Awesome.

Or a lot of "well, this was Supposed to happen, but..."

But I'm totally expecting awesome.

So that's happening, well, today. Then Vegas.

Why Vegas, you ask.

You'll see, i'll bring back pix. Pix o' madness.

So that's my weekend, because Justin asked.

What y'all doing this weekend?
