Here's what I found: Candice Bowen was born in 1916. Her older brother Magee was born in 1913. They are two of four children born to Lindsey Lee Bowen and Ota May Jeffus.

If Candice is five here, that makes the photograph in 1920 or 1921.

On the reverse in very faint pencil:

A little search finds she is Mary. She was born about 1854 in Indiana. She was the mother of nine children. Her maiden name is unknown. In every historical reference to her that could be found, from 1885 on, she is known only as Mary Strach or Mrs. P. J. Strach

Her husband’s name was Phillip J. Strach (probably pronounced Strack, so that’s the way some census-takers spelled it.)

A census in 1915 shows no record of Mary. Phillip is mysteriously listed as a female with two of his daughters Nettie, 42, and Martha, 25, boarding with another family named Samaley.

So here she is; lost to those who would treasure her as an ancestor, mother of nine, known only as the wife of P. J. Strach. Even on the reverse of her own photograph, she is not called by her own name.

There should be more.
