See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

西灣 Sai Van is a bay area [1] at the Macau Peninsula [2], the oldest and most populous part of Macau. In the old times, it used to be a place where merchant ships dock, but it has become a residential area in modern times.

The locals—including schools and public media—pronounced the character 灣 as 環 even though the character suggest otherwise (different intonation in Chinese). Because of this, even the Macau public bus transport Transmac named the place as “西環” instead of “西灣”.

This panorama is stitched using 15 full resolution RAW captures with the 7D and the 24-70. The serial looks off mainly because I originally shot these bracketed intended as HDR but as I wrote earlier the pano processing combined with HDR is somewhat challenging at the moment and I will not attempt it until I have more time in the future.

The unmistakeable architecture for Grand Lisboa (新葡京) [3] can be seen on the far left of the frame, where as the Macau Tower is unfortunately chopped off. One unfortunate reality about these panorama shots is that if I had included the full tower then almost the entire frame would be filled with the sky. I would have had shot these with the 17-40 but I lend it to my dad who was traveling with me and he was way too far away for me to get it back so next time.

It is extremely rare that I would have the time to walk around the airport to do photography. Usually when I am at the airport I am in a hurry. But I came here last week to hang out with a friend whom I haven’t seen for 20 years when she was passing through. And since I came all the way I thought that I would utilize the opportunity to take some photographs also.

Featuring very articulated structural forms and designed by Norman Foster, the Hong Kong International Airport is a perfect marriage of form and function—form follows function—which is precisely what I love about it.

A self portrait with the disfigured forms of the bridges via the very reflective windows of Terminal 1 at Hong Kong International Airport.

This is a good spot for photographing airplanes, but it does not have a view of the runway. I have not yet located a good spot so if you do know, please let me know.
These are street lights on the highway near the Hong Kong International Airport leading to Terminal 1. On the far side is the ocean and mountains which are approximately 3 km (10k ft) away, but they appear fairly close by because it was shot with the 100-400 at 310mm with the 7D = 496mm on full frame.

See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

Here is another shot of those same “god rays” [1] as you guys call it shot on the same day with the 7D + 100-400.

Crepuscular rays [2] are rays of sunlight which radiate from the sun through gaps in clouds. Interestingly I don’t know anything about it but when I see the Chinese name I immediately knows what it means. Chinese is great that way, as the name 雲隙光 [3] literally means lights from the gaps of cloud—so basically cloud as gobo…

This shot was processed in Photoshop Lab color mode as the colors require a very delicate balance. Lightroom’s RGB only editing poses some limitations as to what you can do, and for the sky specifically using two sliders for color temperature tweaking is closed to impossible to get what I wanted. Maybe some day we will see Lab color mode in Lightroom, maybe? Adobe?

Adobe?

Someone on Facebook asked me how I could love the architectures designed Frank Gehry as well as Norman Foster. He sees them in different genres because they follow very different methods of construction, but I see them as the same—as pure expression of forms. While Gehry’s architecture is sculpturally organic and Foster’s designs feature very geometric compositions, they are ultimately about the beauty of forms. My art education from Yale is based in Bauhaus, so perhaps my appreciation of forms differs from his Harvard GSD background.

This is a handheld panorama of Terminal 1 at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). It was stitched together using nine 6D full-res RAW captures with the 17-40. I still haven’t bought a pano head yet so parallax is a bit of an issue, but I am planning on getting one any day now.

My mom saw some panorama shots I took recently and asked me if it was a single shot because I have been raving about the super wide angle I was able to achieve with the 17-40 + full frame 6D body. No—a full frame body cannot really achieve wider than 180-degree shots—perhaps a fish eye lens can but I do not yet have one. 8-15 f/4L looks good, will do some research perhaps.

Besides filled with plants unique to China, there is something special about the architecture seen inside 南蓮園池 Nan Lian Garden. No nails are used to construct any of the buildings—these are techniques developed in China way back in the 唐朝 Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD).

Situated in the middle of the garden is 圓滿閣 Pavilion of Perfection (pictured). Perfection (Sanskrit: paripūrna) describes being surrounded by adequacy and not lacking anything.

The Pavilion of Perfection is shaped as an octagon. The ponds surrounding it is also designed as a lotus with with eight petals. It is used to described the eight auspicious function of water used in the Buddhist tradition: 澄淨、清冷、甘美、輕軟、潤澤、安和、除飢渴、長養諸根 — to clean, to clear, sweetness, lightness, soft, moist, peacefulness, to quench thirst, and to enrich one’s roots.

In addition, the Pavilion of Perfection describes the perfectly harmonious human relationships, the perfect morality, the perfect merit, and the perfect wishes. It is used to describe a blessing for the visitors [1].

This panorama is photographed handheld using nine 7D RAW captures.

Situated in the middle of buzzing streets of Hong Kong, there lies a 3.5-hectare Chinese Classical Garden called Nan Lian Garden (南蓮園池) built in the Tang Dynasty style with hills, water features, trees, rocks and wooden structures.

Whenever visitors to Hong Kong asked me where they should go, I always recommend them to visit here. Not only is the garden filled with exotic plants unique to Chinese landscape, it also has one of the best vegetarian restaurant and tea house in the city.

The garden is completed in 2006 as a joint project of the Chi Lin Nunnery and the Hong Kong Government.

Clockwise from top left: Strattera, Viagra, Panadol, Nicorette. Yes these are all prescriptions.

Why do I get Viagra? Well one of the reasons I don't like to take Strattera aka the “chill pill for when interfacing with humans” is that although it halves my speed and thus make it possible for me to talk to humans in their “normal speed,” it has very severe sexual side effects. It is very challenging.

People who take psychiatric meds would understand this. Many anti-depressants have this side effect mainly because of their specific mechanism of actions (MOA). So it is rather wtf sometimes. You take meds to help you adjust your mood so you don't get depressed but then you would then completely suck in bed.

Not too good ey? But get this—the blue pill pretty much turns you into a sex god and seriously ever since I get these prescriptions there are more than enough men in New York lining up to “play” with me. Oh the crazy insane world of fun when you are certifiably crazy—like I said, Crazyisgood! :)

The photograph is of something, so it is not intrinsically abstract, but what I wish to say is. As such it is abstract. Often people comment on the fact that abstract photography does not exist, in reality it does — it is the intention of the photographer which matters.

The main reason we picked 山東省 Shandong Province as our first destination to travel to for the “中國旅遊 中国旅游 China Tourism” project was to visit the 孔府 Confucius Mansion.

# 孔府 (Kǒng fǔ) [1]

孔府 (Confucius Mansion / Kǒng fǔ) , also known as 聖公府 (shèng gōng fǔ), is located in 曲阜市 Qufu City in the 山東省 Shandong Province of 中國 China. It is the residence mansion of the Confucius family.

The 孔府 Confucius Mansion, the 孔廟 Confucius Temple, and the 孔林 Confucius Cemetery [2] are collectively known as the 「三孔」“three Confucius”. They are part of China’s key protected cultural relics, and is listed as part of the World Cultural Heritage in December 1994.

聖府大門 (圣府大门 “Holy Mansion Grand Entrance” Shèng fǔ dàmén) is the main door to the 孔府 Confucius Mansion, which was designed in the style of 懸山式建築 (悬山式建筑 “hanging cliff styled architecture” Xuán shān shì jiànzhú)[2].

The two characters “聖府” (圣府 “Holy House” Shèng fǔ) were written on the 匾額 (匾额 “plaque”) [3]. It was written by 嚴嵩 (严嵩 Yan Song [4]) from the 明朝 (Ming Dynasty) [5].
# SML Process
1. This is a single capture, but I used Photomatix to tonemap it in order to increase local contrast. Often what people online like about HDR is not HDR but tonemapping. Tonemapping is a process which adjusts local contrast by increasing brightness values in nearby pixels. Photomatix controls have lot of parameters, but you can also use Photoshop’s S+H (shadows and highlights) to achieve similar results.
2. I don’t have an ND filter with me so in order to not blow out the sky, a light gradient mask is applied to the sky where by curves are tweaked.
3. The photo was converted to black and white in Photoshop mainly as I needed fine level of color filter controls. At the time of processing, Lightroom does not yet provide the fine tuning I needed in its B/W processing. Also, creating masks is just a lot easier inside Photoshop, not to mention that it is speedier.

# SML Notes
1. I forgot to change clock traveling from New York so time zone is EST. Thus photo was taken at 13:27:33 Malaysia time.
This photo was taken into Photoshop for some H+S specifically for the shadow area. The color cast is somewhat troubling so it was taken into the L*a*b mode for curve adjustments — which is by far the best method to tweak Lightness curves without affecting color information. The Lab mode additionally allows for color contrast tweaks which are more natural because it does not affect the lightness information (unlike RGB mode where color + lightness is intertwined.)

Some captures are so challenging to attempt to process in Lightroom I would not even bother to try and I would open it as smart object in Photoshop to process immediately.

The light (sun) is coming directly behind the front gate of the 天街 (“Heavenly Street”), but what I is obviously to show the writing on the gate. In the past it was very challenging because it used to mean having to either do some insane masking (which I generally prefer not to) or letting the sky blow out (which is less ideal but doable). These days H+S (Highlight and Shadow) is the perfect tool for it.

For this particular photo, a fairly heavy handed H+S is applied—see screenshot of particular settings at cl.ly/image/0a081L383e2q I don’t generally recommend pushing tonal width to the max for most photos, but often for extreme cases such as this one it is useful.

Usually if anything is eventually going to print I try to do everything else in Photoshop also but since this one is just intended for Flickr (for now) I imported into Lightroom and tweaked to satisfaction. Mostly I tweaked the sharpening with some heavy masking (hold down “option” to view black+white is a good way to see what you are actually adjusting). Backlit objects usually have fairly severe chromatic aberration so a very heavy-handed chromatic aberration is applied also—normally I don’t do this but like I said, this is an unusual circumstance. Screenshot here: cl.ly/image/3P3F12253L3l Also note in the screenshot that when I work with sky I generally turn on the white point “triangle” so it would show me which areas are blown out. It is easier to work with using Curves in Photoshop so if I eventually decide to print anything I usually rework them but again for Flickr for now it is good enough.

I might eventually turn this into black and white but I did how the clothes that the people are wearing matches the sun glow (yellow) and the cold shadow color (blue) so I picked this capture to process instead of another shot without humans in it.

According to locals, Chinese couples visit temples before they get married. Their names are crapted onto each individual lock and a ritual is performed by the monks to bind their love to eternity.

I was at 大明湖 Daming Lake working on my 中國旅遊 中国旅游 China Tourism photography series but I was fascinated with the diversity of transportation methods on the 明湖西路 Minghu West Road near the entrance.

There are no traffic lights on the road and the only way to cross it is to brave it over—and it is difficult. The video shows how an old man does it, and it takes quite a bit of effort.
