Gay men across the world mourn in secret as popular gay porn star Arpad Miklos (real name Peter Kozma) was apparently found dead in his New York apartment on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013. A suicide note was found [1].

I don’t know this Budapest-born actor well. I photographed him during Folsom Street East 2007 when I was invited to photograph the event for a company in New York. What I do know from talking to people who work in the sex trade is that being a porn star is not all that glamorous. It is hard work and they get looked down upon by most.

One of my gay BFFs is a closed friend of Arpad, and he was described to me as being sweet and kind. I had wished to hang out with him some day but it looks like that I have missed my opportunity.

For all that entertainment value that he has provided to gay men across the globe, Arpad will be dearly missed. RIP.

See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

Someone asked me on Facebook if the 6 million views + Google PageRank 6 on SML Flickr is for real. Yes it is. But the 80/20 rule applies here. There a close to 50 images on my stream with 10,000+ views and some singular photo page e.g. The Stata Center taken at MIT has a Google PageRank 5. It is crazy, yes.

This infographic shows the media items together with their Google Page Rank, view count, favorite count, comment count and gallery count. They include my photography, my photojournalism, and my graphic design.

If I did not post these onto Flickr, I would never realize how popular these would become. My taste is unique to myself, so it helps to know what normal humans like. And the popularity of these items certainly help me a lot—especially since I do design consulting for the mass consumer market.

Of interest is that what humans seem to prefer are colorful things spanning to full spectrum of rainbow. Thus reinstating my philosophy that life celebrates diversity. If you do not agree, most certainly I think that the data would reflect this reality.

I am easy-going, but I am also highly opinionated. Humans often ask me what my opinions are for their stuff, but most often they just want me to tell them it is great. I don’t do that. So if you ask for feedback, you will get it as it is. If you maintain ego-free (無我) then any feedback is good feedback. Whether it is constructive or not is how you the proceed to interpret the data. Maintain emotion0 if you wish to do data analytics.

Flickr’s interestingness uses humans as computation devices. Since I am unable to analyze which of my opinions are best, I leave it to humans aka (SML:biobots) to sort it out for me.

Pictured: my opinions on all things random in my life, tagged with unique tag SMLOpinions and sorted by Flickr’s interestingness algorithm. What humans seem to like is fairly bizarre.

See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

Data is important to me. Some humans commented that I have a lot of tags. If you have no data, sure, you don’t need tags. But if you have 10,000+ media items on Flickr like I do, you tag, you organize, you make sure that everything you do is searchable so that when someone asked you for a photo, you are able to find it under 10 seconds. I can do that. Can you?

1 2
3 4

1. I use Adobe Lightroom, because it has tight integration with the EXIF metadata storage scheme implemented by Flickr.

2. When I enter information in the title / description area of Lightroom, it automatically populates the relevant fields on Flickr. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/

3. When I assign keywords inside Lightroom, they get populated as Flickr tags. Lightroom has an awesome feature which allows you to create synonyms for tags, and is what I currently do for Chinese tags. I am bilingual, Flickr is not. So assigning synonyms inside Lightroom, I tag once but then Flickr shows both Chinese and English on the page. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/

4. The JPEG format stores metadata information in the form of EXIF. Add /meta to the Flickr URL and you see it instantly. JPEG EXIF on Flickr is text only, making it very indexable by search engines. All that info you spend time organizing in Lightroom is reflected automatically. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/meta

Some people said that they have no idea where I find the time to popular these fields. I don’t. Everything is automatic. Things just get smartly embedded everywhere. With a few scripts anything is possible.

Someone on Instagram told SML to STFU. Yes please do that. Verbal diarrhea is an SML specialty, and thus a tshirt was custom made to broadcast this message.
# Statement

My work is very process driven as I explore paint application processes of dripping, pouring, and staining fields of color onto surfaces, often working on the floor. Complimenting this gestural and chance-driven method, I then carefully work back into the pieces with intricate line-work, redefining solid shapes and voids, and often referencing figure. My most recent works on paper investigate the human body; it’s forms, functions, anatomical structures, and viscera. Through my creative process I recreate the body in layers echoing sheaths of organic systems, which are constantly in flux. My work reflects on themes surrounding death and decay in our culture, and contemporary science and technology’s influence on our concept of the body as a mutable physical substance. I want my work to evoke a sense of the grotesque; or a confrontation of and fusion of normally incompatible things; geometric and organic, man and beast, flora and fauna, internal viscera and outer shell, beautiful and repulsive, life and death, the decoratively abstract, and figuratively monstrous.

# Biography

Julia Colavita was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 6, 1983. She completed her B.A. in studio art from Hartwick College in 2005, where she concentrated in painting, but also explored a variety of different mediums, including glassblowing, photography, and video art. Shortly after this in 2005 she studied and worked with art activist Checo Valdez and other international artists to facilitate community mural projects in Mexico, also returning recently to participate on a mural project in summer of 2009. In 2006 she was awarded a fellowship with the NEA-funded nonprofit organization ArtrainUSA, exhibiting her work and bringing the arts to small communities nationwide. She has been living and working in New York since summer of 2006, and most recently completed her MFA at the New York Academy of Art in May 2010.

“Self portraits = important for random business blind dates” #me #opinions #crazyisgood

Some people form the opinion that self portraits are narcissistic. The truth is, they serve a purpose. I often go meet random people in the wild for business.

The problem is that although it is customary for personal blind dates to send photo for each other, it is not as customary for business blind dates to send visual references.

The result is looking like an idiot trying to figure out which Joe Schmo you are meeting. The worst thing that you want is looking like you are trying to pick up strangers in random cafes.

When I meet anyone that I don’t know. I always send them my visual references. It is important. Usually I also send them my stats: 36yo, 6 ft 2 in (188cm), 32w. Important stats for dating is just as useful for business hookups / meet ups, I think.

“NYC Men Review: Erotocrat” #gay #crazyisgood

Following the apparent popularity of my first review, I thought that I will start a series titled “men review.” Erotocrat is difficult to describe, but thankfully he writes very well. In section “What I’m doing with my life” on his Okcupid profile [1], he wrote:

“I am currently writing a book entitled: Sauna, Shower and Steam Room Politics at Gymnasiums. This book is inspired by loony characters I see in the gym, such as Horsedick prancing about in swimming area in a neon orange speedo, the cute waitron with a tattoo of New York emblazoned upon his shoulder who yawns so much that he's narcoleptic and the lady with the cancerous lesion on her back that is shaped like Ireland and many, many mo, ye.

When my caustic sense of humor is on the down low, I enjoy attaining a svelte physique, photography and interior decorating. This as we are visual beasts, whether we care to admit it or not. Oh and the smell of old books turns me on.”
There are photos on my Flickr stream which inspires complete photography series. These photos were taken the gay pride in New York City in 2007. I usually try to name my photographs with a meaningful title. Not knowing his name but also not wanting to just call him “Hot guy #1836,” I named him “ideal husband”. The photo was so popular on SML Flickr that I started a photography series and created a brand and an identity for the photography series filled with guys both straight and gay whom I would marry in a heartbeat :) #crazyisgood

How do you know what kind of design people like the most? By international design awards? Not likely. User research has made me come to the conclusion that what designers consider to be great is not the same as what the gen pop considers to be great. But no problem—Flickr interestingness to the rescue. By using humans as bots (aka SML#biobots), the interestingness algorithm sorts out your designs with regards to what humans seem to like.

I regularly post my designs onto Flickr, including personal rejects so I can document my process. And one weird bit that I realize is to find some of my rejects to be considered more interesting than what was actually implemented.

Hypothesis: posting TBD designs onto Flickr may in fact be a great user research tool if you wish to deduce what works and what does not.
I publish almost everything on Flickr via Creative Commons (CCBY) [1]. Since joining Flickr in 2006, I have published more than 10,000+ media items onto this UGC (user-generated content) site. This particular set is sorted according to Flickr’s interestingness algorithm, thus identifying interesting items for reuse.

Media items include my photography, my design, my photojournalism of public events, my videography, my interviews with artists and their art works, my photography of many gay events ranging from the publicly available to private exclusive parties.

I believe that the future of economy is free, and I hope that someone will find use to the massive output which I create daily. You can use any of these for free as long as you provide credit somewhere. For non-attribution use please contact seeminglee@smluniverse.com — SML Thank You!

# Notes
1. Some of the media assets are copyright only because they are design projects created for clients. They appear on my Flickr stream as part of my design portfolio and as such cannot be used for Creative Commons use. Everything that SML Universe creates that we're not for clients are published CCBY.
