See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

I saw an amazing rock climbing photo by @ClaraSoh [1], but I thought that it could be processed better. She said that it was taken by her phone and that she would take a real camera with her next time. But the reality is that the phone cameras are actually pretty good these days—all you need to do is apply the necessary processing to make it better.

She sent me the JPEG taken with the phone and I processed these bits inside Photoshop after opening image as small object as a layer:

1. USM with small radius. This enhances photo sharpness.
2. Shadows & Highlights. Opens up shadow area.
3. Channel Mixer. Check monochrome for black and white conversion.
4. Curves. For tonal adjustment, here aplied to increase contrast in the midtones for the rock.
5. USM with large radius. Set to 20% overlay over the original photo to increase overall contrast for large patches.

I process it in black and white so that I can highlight the very wiry lines in a light color against the predominantly dark rocks.

And this is the result. In general I don’t do many local area adjustments for photos which already work out of the box. Remember: you don’t need an expensive camera for photography—but if you use a less expensive camera it just requires more work in processing.

Swatch pairing this evening—black skin chronos.

I have been collecting Swatches since I was a teenager. My dad introduced me to them when it was introduced way back in 1983 when I was 7yo. I did not think much about then then. As a young boy, I questioned why people would be crazy enough to buy watches just to go with their outfits. Fast forward to my adulthood, and I find myself doing exactly that—buying Swatches to go with my outfits. It is crazy yes?

Unlike other collectors, I do not collect to keep them inside its cases to be sold later for much higher value in the market. I wear all of mine. The skin collection (pictured) is one of my favorite, as it fits inside shirts very well. Last week I went to the Swatch Shop to get the new one with a jeans band. To my surprise, Swatch said that they do not manufacture Chronos Skin anymore. Making this a very rare item, apparently.

Photographed with iPad 3, processed in Snapseed.

The ever changing water photographed at the ground level as well as from the 27th floor vantage point of SML Universe HKG using the 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x Extender zoomed to the max (280mm). I think that I need a longer lens, and am shopping for one.

There was some color oddity added to the mix when YouTube / Flickr / Vimeo re-encoded my video so hereby reissue as black and white as well as tweaked with curves. Which is a whole lot better now, I think.

There are many old and living trees inside the Kowloon Park in Hong Kong. Manmade structures have been built around them but their roots are so deep that they will grab hold on anything in order to survive.

The 界 Division series is mostly about forms divided by lines for balance. The black cat in this capture adds a bit of life to the space, which I like.

The EOS M will go all the way to ISO 6400 apparently—had to move the luminance noise reduction to 100 to make the capture tolerable—I guess there is a first time for everything.

Two asian waterbirds chasing the tail of a Keka-class patrol boat of the Hong Kong Marine police launch at Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong. I think that I might be able to complete the full line-up by year end. :)

According to Wikipedia, Keka class patrol boats are vessels designed by ASC Pty. Ltd. (formerly named Australian Submarine Corporation) originally for the Royal Thai Navy (3 vessels). A second variant series was designed for the Hong Kong Marine Police (6 vessels) [1].

Also, please note that the “seagulls” referenced earlier on the stream are apparently all asian waterbirds. I just didn’t realise that. And apparently they are under WWF protection [3].

Regarding the black and white processing, I know that it is a bit of extreme. But doing scientific reproduction too long and I get bored. So a bit of fun for me.

See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

Someone on Google+ asked to see a black and white rendering of a photograph in the Serenity series [1]. This is one process of it. Personally I think that the color version is better because the colors of the lights adds more to the photograph where as this black and white is mostly about moods and that tranquil quality in the color version is lost.

But the most WTF thing about my photography work tends to follow a very simple formula: what I love, no one likes. What I don’t like, everyone likes. So maybe you will like this. Who knows.

A collage of architectural forms at night in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The only way this is possible is if you are living in a city where you are surrounded by tall buildings.

On the top is an awning of a restaurant, I think (萬寶樓 Main Pole House). To the left is 利榮大樓 Lee Wing Building. Looks like residential but I am not sure. 修頓花園 Southorn Garden is the building at the bottom. This I believe is residential as the name suggests. The 安康商業大廈 On Hong Commercial Building is the office skyscraper on the right.

Pointing upwards with a wide angle lens affords this. Super sweet. The GP-E2 GPS unit allows me to figure out where I was on Google Maps after the fact. For these kinds of photos the centre is obviously not the focus so I would perform vignette removals on them so you can actually see the forms. S+H also needs to be applied so it is tweaked inside Photoshop. I wish that Lightroom would have S+H also.

Dogs have a better view than humans, I think. I am 188cm (6 ft 2 in) tall so things look very different for me. The good thing about being tall is that although I do get claustrophobic easily, riding on the jam-packed metro in Hong Kong I still only see open space. But things always seem so much more interesting near the ground level. Maybe I just don’t see this view much.

This was photographed near where I live: 聽濤雅苑 Vista Paradiso (in the background). The pathway on the right is the bicycle lane. If you walk all the way down you will reach the 馬鞍山海濱長廊 Ma On Shan promenade. A lot of bicycles are parked here because it is connected directly to the 恆安地鐵站 Heng On MTR (Hong Kong metro) Station . So I guess people would bike to the station, park their bikes here and get on the subway.

Most parts of Ma On Shan are connected with bicycle lanes. If I could do this in New York I would so do it. Unfortunately it is not.

A collage of forms seen at a 巴士站 bus stop at 西沙路 Sai Sha Road.

The dominating zigzagged V form is a pedestrian footbridge allowing people to cross the highway. The taller bridge going horizontally is the 地鐵馬山鞍山線 MTR Ma On Shan Line (Hong Kong’s metro network) which runs parallel to the highway.

At the bottom tip of the V form is a 雙層巴士 double decker bus. Almost all buses in Hong Kong are double deckers. The vehicle closed by is a 21 seater minibus.

小巴 Minibuses serve routes which do not have many passengers. They have a defined route with a few defined mini bus stops at the terminals, but you can get off anywhere you like. You just alert the driver when you want to get off and they stop for you. It is a bit like a cab with a route.

Our eyes are used to seeing what we see daily. What is different makes it interesting. Thus the view upis always more interesting than what is down below. So point your camera everywhere, even if there does not seem like there is anything to photograph. This fact is especially apparent when you use a wide angle lens.

See-ming Lee 李思明 SML posted a photo:

I love photographing trash. I started my “Deadyard” series for a few reasons:

1. Often people respond to photography because of the intrinsically beautiful subject matter. I see it all the time. Sh!tty photos of beautiful men. Very popular photography with no inherent photographic value. It is unhealthy. I have a few of those sh!tty photos on my Flickr stream also. I have no idea why they become so popular. People are responding to the person, not the photography. So by photographing intrinsically ugly things the viewer must respond to the photography itself.

2. I am far from perfect. So in some ways these are self portraits. Broken, battered, depressed and left out to die. They are real. This is what life is. When you face life head one and be able to stay your own, you are fearless. I see beauty in everything around me. Life is much more enjoyable this way.

3. I know looking at other photography works that many people also see the beauty of decay. There are far more interesting things, textures, and forms in wasteland. No one really care to organise them. But they are beautiful. Just imagine for a second that these are not trash but forms in an abstract painting. This is what I would paint if I were a painter. This is poetry to my eyes.

Pictured: the trash file left behind on the roof of some storefront in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Photographed while walking on a pedestrian bridge and thus be able to see all the things which were left behind. Completely random, though every bit interesting.
Southorn Playground is surrounded by Hennessy Road in the North, Luard Road (West), Johnston Road (South) and Southorn Centre (East). It has been Wan Chai's main recreational area since the early 1970s. Formerly a thriving night market, it was named in 1934 after Sir Wilfrid Thomas Southorn who was the Colonial Secretary (second highest position of Hong Kong Government) in 1925-1936.

I knew from experience that long exposure of water would render a blur, but what I did not know is that because of this blur, the reflected forms would be clear and sharp. Obviously this made sense but it is a very welcoming surprise, so I will try more of it in the future.

The 1.4x extender continues to be a wonderful accessory. It turns the 70-200 f/4L effectively into a 98-280 f/5.6L lens. Together with the APS-C sized 7D with a 1.6 crop factor, it is functioning as a 157-448 f/5.6L lens on a full frame body.

Zooming that far also means that there are not much geometric distortion so it has been a really fun ride.

There is a reason that I did not get the 2x extender. Each 1.4x will stop the lens down 1 stop, and what most people might not realise is that with the exception of EOS 1D, none of the Canon EOS line-up can do autofocus with an f/8 lens. For this shot I used manual focus anyway because it was too dark, but for shooting daylight scenes especially birds having autofocus is still much of a blessing.

Photographed with Canon EOS M and the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L lens mounted on tripod at SML Universe Limited (Hong Kong). Imported into Premiere Pro and sped up 1000%. In the middle you will see a ship hurry quickly by. There is a long version for this also but no one really have the time to look at 10 min of “artsy” video so hereby sped up ten times to 53 sec total.

Soundtrack composed using the iPad app Orphion (playing live). First exported as m4a in-app, then imported into Ableton Live 8 to manually wrap points. Added some Lexicon reverb and then mastered using iZotope Ozone 5. The full-length 24-bit 48 kHz track can be downloaded on SML SoundCloud. See link below.

# Notes
www.zdic.net/cy/ch/ZdicE5Zdic95ZdicB821384.htm

I thought that the “Elevator SML Me” needs to have at least one photo which looks like that it was taken inside an elevator. Even the 2:3 aspect ratio does not look right so here by cropped as 16:9. This is also a good example of how I “roll”:

I believe that bright colors should only be used as accents, so I normally wear either all blue or all black accented by a pair of bright color shoes, watch or cufflinks.
No matter how many things I carry, I make sure that I am always hands-free. You need two hands for photography so I prefer backpacks which are weather-proof but light—this one is by MUJI naturally.
Accessibility matters. So my jackets usually have a ton of pockets. But you won’t see me wearing any of those “photographer vest” any time soon.

Taken on my way up to Shure HQ at 625 King’s Road — thus wearing the B&W P5, which is starting to get hot again in Hong Kong’s “winter”. Taken with iPhone 5 and processed in Photoshop Touch for iPad—I now work on the images on the iPad even though I shoot with the iPhone if I can because iPhone’s screen is just too small.
