Downtown - Estes - Washington

Electric Crayon posted a photo:

I was heading east on SR 260, a stretch of road that I had never been on before, when I notice off in the distance the upper section of some rather large old grain elevators. By this time I had been driving for about three and a half hours and decided I needed to stop and stretch my legs. Never one to turn down a good self-guided grain tower tour, I grabbed my camera and started walking. I could not help but notice that for some odd reason this old road I was walking on, which was way out in the middle of nowhere, had been paved over many years ago and then abandoned. As I walked the road it soon became apparent that at one time this was the main highway, ancient wooden posts used for cable based guard rails still remain embedded in the desert soil and the broken crumbling remains
of asphalt lead you over sagebrush covered landscape and down into the Washtucna Coulee.
It took about 20 min. to reach the towers and since this is rattlesnake country I spent more time then usual surveying the ground I walked on. You can only see a portion of the towers from SR 260, so I was not quite sure what to expect and was pleased to find they were more impressive then I had imagined. An abandoned railroad bed can be seen for miles snaking its way through the Coulee and these grain elevators help feed the rail cars that once stopped here.
When I got back to my car, I pulled out my road atlas and discovered that these grain elevators are all that is left of the town of Estes, Washington.
