The Zebra Longwing butterfly (Heliconius charitonius).

The Zebra Longwing rests communally in groups of 25-30 individuals in the same place night after night.

This butterfly is considered "protected", because it has body fluids which are distasteful to birds.

The stripped color pattern of the Zebra Longwing benefits the butterfly, because it is nearly impossible to tell what direction it is flying.

Wingspan: 2 ¾ - 4 inches (7- 10.1cm)

Identification: Wings long and narrow; black with narrow yellow stripes.

Early Stages: Males patrol for females, and are also attracted to female chrysalids. A male will wait on the chrysalis and mate with the female when she is about to emerge. He then deposits on her abdomen a chemical that repels other males. Eggs are laid in groups of 5-15 on leaf buds or leaves. Caterpillars feed at night on leaves. The caterpillars are white, branched black spines, and have a pale yellow head.

Caterpillar hosts: Passion vines

Adult food: Flower nectar and pollen, which are gathered on a set foraging route or "trap-line". Favorite plants are lantana and shepherd’s needle.

The Viceroy butterfly (Basilarchia archippus).

Although the Viceroy is a well known mimic of the Monarch butterfly, their behavior is different. The Viceroy’s wings are held in a horizontal position while gliding, and the Monarch’s wings are angled upward.

Wingspan: 2 ½ – 3 3/8 inches (6.3 - 8.6cm)

Identification: Upperside is orange and black, resembling the Monarch, except the Viceroy has a black line across the hindwing and a single row of white dots in the black marginal band. Where Monarchs are rare in Florida, Georgia, and the southwest, Viceroys are brown instead of orange and mimic the Queen.

Early Stages: Females lay eggs at the tip of host plant leaves, depositing only two or three eggs on a plant before moving to another. Caterpillars eat their eggshells after they hatch, then at night feed on catkins and leaves. Young caterpillars make a ball of leaf bits, dung, and silk which hangs off the leaf on which they are feeding; the dangling mass may distract predators. Third-stage caterpillars make a shelter from a rolled leaf tip in which to spend the winter. Caterpillars are green, with a white dorsal blotch, white sides, a few black spots, and two bristles behind head.
Caterpillar hosts: Trees in the willow family including willows and poplars and cottonwoods.

Adult Food: Early in the season Viceroys feed on aphid honeydew, carrion, dung, and decaying fungi. Later generations feed more often at flowers, favoring composites including aster, goldenrod, joe-pye weed, shepherd’s needle, and Canada thistle.

The Julia butterfly (Dryas iulia).

This butterfly is the only member of its genus. It is thought to be distasteful to predators, because its caterpillars feed on poisonous passion flowers. The adults forage along a set route of nectar sources each day in a behavior known as "trap-lining".

Wing span: 3 ¼ - 3 5/8 inches (8.2 - 9.2cm)

Identification: Forewings elongate. Male bright orange above and below; upperside of hindwing with narrow black border. Female duller orange, with more black markings above.

Early Stages: Males patrol all day for receptive females. Eggs are laid singly on new growth. Caterpillar is brown with fine transverse black lines, and spiny spots on back.

Caterpillar hosts: Passion-vines

Adult food: Nectar from flowers including lantana and shepherd’s needle, and others.
